This route turns an A1 foundation into a working core system: all seven cases, personal pronouns and clitics, future and conditional forms, aspectual choices, high-frequency prepositions, comparison, and connected everyday texts. It assumes that you can already read both scripts slowly, form basic present and perfect clauses, and manage practiced nominative, accusative, locative, and instrumental phrases.
A2 is not the point at which you finally "complete" cases or aspect. It is the level at which those systems become usable across more situations. The route therefore revisits the same nouns and verbs under new government, tense, aspect, and information-structure demands.
Entry diagnostic and prerequisites
Before beginning, complete four tasks without opening a lesson:
- read 80 familiar words in Cyrillic and another 80 in Latin;
- introduce yourself, describe a routine, and recount yesterday for two minutes;
- contrast a destination with a location using у or на;
- write six perfect clauses with the correct auxiliary and l-participle agreement.
Јуче смо стигли у Крагујевац, а данас смо у центру града.
Yesterday we arrived in Kragujevac, and today we are in the city center. (entry diagnostic: destination versus location)
If any task collapses, repair the relevant part of the A1 path first. Do not use A2 case tables to hide an unstable A1 clause.
Stage 1 — Turn the seven cases into a network
Start with the case-ending map, agreement across the phrase, and prepositions and case. Then work through the cases in a functional sequence:
- nominative forms for naming and subjects;
- accusative direct objects and motion;
- genitive forms, possession, and common prepositions;
- dative forms and indirect objects;
- instrumental forms and means versus accompaniment;
- locative forms, location, and topic;
- vocative overview for real address.
Learn contrasts through governed frames, not English labels. Dative is not simply "to" and genitive is not simply "of." A verb or preposition creates a relation; the case encodes that relation.
Послала сам колегиници документ без последње странице.
I sent my female colleague a document without the last page.
Here колегиници is dative recipient, документ is accusative direct object, and без последње странице is genitive after без. One ordinary sentence retrieves three roles.
С новим комшијама разговарамо о поправци лифта.
We are talking with the new neighbors about repairing the elevator.
С новим комшијама is instrumental accompaniment; о поправци is locative topic. Say each full phrase aloud before isolating an ending.
Checkpoint: for one familiar noun of each gender, produce a useful phrase in all seven cases. Then use at least five of the forms in a coherent 120-word message. Passing means selecting the case from its governor and meaning, not reciting the table in order.
Stage 2 — Make pronouns and clitics carry old information
Study personal pronouns, clitic versus full forms, clitic forms including je and ju, and the second-position rule. Then add cluster order.
Full forms can bear emphasis, contrast, or follow a preposition. Clitics normally refer to accessible information and cannot simply occupy the English object position. Learn a cluster as a hierarchy of functions, not a memorized sound string.
Милица ми је јутрос послала адресу, па ћу ти је проследити.
Milica sent me the address this morning, so I will forward it to you.
The first cluster contains dative ми plus auxiliary је. The second contains dative ти plus feminine accusative је, referring to адресу. Context, gender, and cluster position disambiguate them.
Њему сам објаснила проблем, а њој ћу га показати на слици.
I explained the problem to him, and I will show it to her in the picture.
Full њему/њој create contrast. Accusative га resumes the already mentioned problem.
Checkpoint: retell a six-turn exchange without repeating the same full nouns. Include one dative clitic, one accusative clitic, one cluster with an auxiliary, and one genuinely contrastive full pronoun. Record the retelling and mark the first prosodic unit that licenses each cluster.
Stage 3 — Add future and conditional without losing clitic order
Learn future I together with future spelling and other future expressions. Both да + present and the infinitive are available in Serbian; their distribution depends on construction, speaker, and style. Do not declare one universally wrong.
Сутра ћу позвати сервис и питаћу када могу да дођу.
Tomorrow I will call the repair service and ask when they can come.
Then study conditional I and conditional sentences. The clitic forms бих, би, бисмо, бисте, би combine with the l-participle; person is not supplied by the participle alone.
Да имамо већи сто, позвали бисмо још двоје пријатеља.
If we had a larger table, we would invite two more friends.
At A2, prioritize real functions: intention, plan, prediction, polite request, imagined result, and practical condition. Historical conditional II is not part of this production target.
Да ли бисте ми послали потврду имејлом?
Would you send me the confirmation by email? (polite request)
Checkpoint: leave a one-minute voice message with two plans, one prediction, one condition, and one polite request. Repeat it with a new time and recipient so the auxiliary and clitics must change.
Stage 4 — Choose aspect from the event you mean
Review imperfective meaning and perfective meaning, then use the aspect decision guide, dictionary strategy, and pairs that are not exact synonyms.
Do not learn писати today and написати weeks later as unrelated vocabulary. Record an aspectual network with its construction and meaning: писати поруку focuses the activity; написати поруку presents a completed message; преписати поруку adds the lexical meaning "copy/rewrite."
Док сам чекала аутобус, писала сам поруку, али је нисам завршила.
While I was waiting for the bus, I was writing a message, but I did not finish it. (female speaker)
Кад стигнем кући, написаћу ти све детаље.
When I get home, I will write you all the details.
English often leaves boundedness to context. Serbian makes aspect a lexical choice, but prefixes may also add place, quantity, or result. A dictionary pair is a hypothesis to test in examples, not permission to swap two verbs everywhere.
Checkpoint: build ten mini-networks from verbs you already know. For each, give one imperfective sentence, one perfective sentence, and any important prefixed meaning that is not a pure pair. Reuse five networks in past and future contexts.
Stage 5 — Expand prepositions and comparison
Study u and na, s and sa, motion prepositions, temporal prepositions, and preposition pitfalls. Learn the preposition, case, and meaning together.
Ушла сам у библиотеку пре подне, а из библиотеке сам изашла тек после два.
I went into the library before noon and did not leave it until after two. (female speaker)
The motion pair у библиотеку / из библиотеке is not captured by memorizing one English in/from equivalence. It combines direction with accusative and source with genitive.
Add the comparative, the superlative, and irregular adjective and adverb comparison. Practice од + genitive and него in their actual structures.
Воз је бржи од аутобуса, али ми је аутобуска станица ближа.
The train is faster than the bus, but the bus station is closer for me.
Checkpoint: compare three routes, apartments, products, or schedules. Give reasons using locations, sources, destinations, prices, and at least four comparative or superlative forms.
Stage 6 — Read and perform connected everyday texts
Work through these annotated texts in order:
For each text, read once for outcome: what do the speakers accomplish? On the second pass, mark governors and case forms. On the third, circle clitic clusters and label their referents. Finally, replace the people, place, time, and requested item and perform both roles.
Нисам добро чула: да ли сте рекли да се налазимо испред музеја или у музеју?
I did not hear clearly: did you say that we are meeting in front of the museum or inside the museum? (female speaker)
This repair question combines perfect agreement, reported content, a reflexive clitic, and two location phrases. Connected tasks reveal whether the systems can cooperate.
Script and spaced-review schedule
Use the same 1–3–7–14 intervals as at A1, but alternate the input script. On day 1, annotate a Cyrillic text; on day 3, type a Latin version from dictation; on day 7, summarize it in Cyrillic; on day 14, perform the situation without either text. Preserve Lj/Nj/Dž in title case and LJ/NJ/DŽ only in all-capitals contexts.
Every review should retrieve one old case frame, one clitic cluster, one tense or mood, and one aspect contrast. A review that isolates only endings breaks the spiral.
Final A2 checkpoint
Complete two tasks one week apart:
- Spoken task: a five-minute paired scenario in which you arrange an appointment, compare two options, explain a previous problem, state a future plan, make a polite conditional request, and repair one misunderstanding.
- Written task: a 170–200-word message in Cyrillic, followed by a 60-word Latin-script summary. Use all seven cases at least once where naturally licensed, two clitic clusters, two aspect contrasts, future I, and conditional I.
Advance when a listener or reader can follow both tasks and when repeated errors are limited to one or two local patterns that you can identify and repair. Page completion alone is not the criterion.
Common Mistakes
Choosing case from an English preposition
❌ На паузи смо разговарали о нова расподела задатака.
Incorrect—о takes the locative here, so the phrase must be о новој расподели задатака.
✅ На паузи смо разговарали о новој расподели задатака.
During the break, we discussed the new distribution of tasks.
Placing clitics where English places objects
❌ Ја послаћу сутра ти је.
Incorrect—subject repetition is unnecessary, and the dative and accusative clitics require a natural second-position cluster.
✅ Сутра ћу ти је послати после ручка.
I will send it to you tomorrow after lunch.
Using a perfective verb for an unfinished activity
❌ Два сата сам прочитала извештај, али нисам стигла до краја.
Incorrect for the intended unfinished process—прочитати presents completion, which conflicts with not reaching the end.
✅ Два сата сам читала извештај, али нисам стигла до краја.
I read the report for two hours, but I did not reach the end. (female speaker)
Replacing conditional person forms with one invariant би
❌ Ми би раније кренули да имамо ауто.
Incorrect in standard Serbian—first-person plural requires бисмо.
✅ Ми бисмо раније кренули да имамо ауто.
We would leave earlier if we had a car.
Key Takeaways
- Retrieve all seven cases from governors and meanings, not from an English case label.
- Use full pronouns for emphasis or prepositional forms and clitics for accessible arguments.
- Practice future and conditional forms inside natural second-position clusters.
- Learn every new verb with aspectual relatives, construction frames, and meaning differences.
- Maintain both scripts through alternating reading, dictation, summary, and performance.
- Advance to B1 after delayed connected use, not after one successful table exercise.
