The Superlative

The Serbian superlative is built by adding нај- to the comparative, not to the positive adjective: леп → лепши → најлепши, паметан → паметнији → најпаметнији. It identifies the member with the highest degree of a property within a relevant comparison set.

The prefix and adjective are written as one word. The resulting adjective still agrees fully with its noun: најбољи предлог, најбоља идеја, најбоље решење, најбоље идеје.

Build it from the comparative

Once the comparative is known, superlative formation is regular—even when the comparative stem itself is irregular.

Најмлађа чланица тима представила је најновије резултате.

The youngest team member presented the latest results.

Ово је најлепши поглед на реку у целом граду.

This is the most beautiful view of the river in the whole city.

Do not form the superlative directly as најдобар or највелик. The prefix attaches to бољи and већи, producing најбољи and највећи. The irregular comparison stems are covered on irregular comparison.

💡
Think “highest comparative”: first retrieve бољи, већи, млађи, then add нај-. This gives најбољи, највећи, најмлађи without inventing a form from the positive.

Write нај- together, including double ј

Нај- is a prefix, so there is no space or hyphen: најбржи, not нај бржи or нај-бржи. When the comparative begins in ј, both instances of ј remain.

јефтинијинајјефтинијинај + јефтинији

Најјачи кандидат није нужно и најискуснији преговарач.

The strongest candidate is not necessarily the most experienced negotiator.

Ово је најјефтинија карта за директан вечерњи полазак.

This is the cheapest ticket for a direct evening departure.

The double ј is not an exotic exception; it is the visible boundary between prefix and comparative. Serbian normally avoids arbitrary double consonants, but transparent prefix boundaries preserve them here. Ordinary spelling carries no pitch-accent marks.

Superlatives agree across the phrase

Superlatives decline like long-form adjectives. They have gender, number, case, and masculine animacy; they do not have a short counterpart such as најбољ.

Најбољој кандидаткињи понудили су уговор на неодређено време.

Жири је наградио најмлађег редитеља и најбољу глумицу.

The jury awarded the youngest director and the best actress.

The last sentence shows masculine animate accusative најмлађег редитеља beside feminine accusative најбољу глумицу. The prefix never changes, but every ending still belongs to the phrase’s case.

💡
Underline the noun before choosing the ending. Најбољ- names the degree; -и/-а/-е/-ег/-ој/-им identifies gender, number, case, and sometimes animacy.

Attributive and predicative use

Before a noun, the superlative identifies a member: најбржи воз. In the predicate, it assigns that status: овај воз је најбржи. Predicative superlatives still agree.

Овај улаз је најужи, ова врата су најшира, а бочни пролаз је најкраћи.

This entrance is the narrowest, these doors are the widest, and the side passage is the shortest.

Најтиша соба гледа на двориште, али је уједно и најмања.

The quietest room faces the courtyard, but it is also the smallest.

In the second sentence, feminine најмања identifies соба even though the noun is not repeated. Agreement supplies the reference.

Serbian usually places an attributive adjective before its noun. Postposition can be contrastive, poetic, or otherwise marked; it does not create the difference between “a best” and “the best.” Superlatives use long-form morphology, but long versus short is not an article system.

State the comparison set when it matters

A superlative is interpreted within a set supplied by context. Serbian can make that set explicit with у + locative, међу + instrumental, or од + genitive with a total expression.

Лена је најбржа у нашој групи и најмлађа међу финалисткињама.

Lena is the fastest in our group and the youngest among the finalists.

Од свих понуђених станова, овај је најсветлији.

Of all the apartments offered, this one is the brightest.

The cases belong to the governing expressions: у групи is locative, међу финалисткињама instrumental, and од свих станова genitive. Do not leave the noun in nominative simply because English uses “in” or “of.”

“One of the best” requires genitive plural

The pattern један/једна/једно од + superlative genitive plural selects one member from a set:

То је једна од најкориснијих књига које сам ове године прочитала.

That is one of the most useful books I’ve read this year.

Ово је једно од најмирнијих места на острву.

This is one of the quietest places on the island.

Једна agrees with the singled-out item understood as књига, while од најкориснијих књига is genitive plural. English speakers often make only the superlative plural; Serbian requires the entire phrase after од to be genitive plural.

Relative degree, not an automatic intensifier

Најлепши normally means “the most beautiful” relative to an understood set, not simply “very beautiful.” Use веома, изузетно, необично for a high absolute degree when no ranking is intended.

There are lexicalized formulas, such as најлепше хвала “thank you very much,” in which the literal ranking has faded. Treat these as expressions, not as a general rule that нај- means “very.”

Најлепше хвала што сте нам помогли око селидбе.

Thank you very much for helping us with the move.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build and spell the superlative

Form superlatives from јак, јасан, јефтин, добар, мек and use two in a natural statement.

Најјасније објашњење било је уједно и најкраће, а најјефтинији пакет није био најбољи.

The clearest explanation was also the shortest, while the cheapest package was not the best.

Task 2: Make the comparison set explicit

Complete one sentence with у + locative, one with међу + instrumental, and one with од + genitive.

Ово је најстарија кућа у улици, најлепша међу обновљеним зградама и најмања од свих кућа на тргу.

This is the oldest house on the street, the most beautiful among the renovated buildings, and the smallest of all the houses on the square.

Common Mistakes

Writing the prefix separately or with a hyphen

❌ Ово је нај бољи или нај-бољи предлог.

Incorrect — нај- is written together with the comparative: најбољи.

✅ Ово је најбољи предлог који смо до сада добили.

This is the best proposal we have received so far.

Dropping one ј

❌ Марко је најачи играч у екипи.

Incorrect — нај + јачи retains both ј letters: најјачи.

✅ Марко је најјачи играч у екипи.

Marko is the strongest player on the team.

Attaching нај- to the positive irregular adjective

❌ То је најдобра понуда за породице.

Incorrect — добар has comparative бољи, so the superlative is најбољи/најбоља.

✅ То је најбоља понуда за породице.

That is the best offer for families.

Leaving the superlative ending unchanged

❌ Разговарали смо са најискуснији лекарком.

Incorrect — instrumental feminine requires најискуснијом with лекарком.

✅ Разговарали смо с најискуснијом лекарком у клиници.

We spoke with the most experienced female doctor at the clinic.

Leaving the comparison set in nominative

❌ Она је најстрпљивија од све колеге.

Incorrect — од governs genitive plural: од свих колега.

✅ Она је најстрпљивија од свих колега у одељењу.

She is the most patient of all the colleagues in the department.
