Irregular Comparison and Comparing Adverbs

The most frequent Serbian comparisons include stems that cannot be predicted from the positive: добар — бољи, велик — већи, мали — мањи, зао — гори. These are suppletive or strongly irregular paradigms, so attaching a regular suffix produces the wrong word.

Adverbs add a second contrast. A comparative adjective agrees with a noun—бржи воз, бржа веза, брже решење—but a comparative adverb is invariable: воз иде брже, веза ради брже, решење налазимо брже.

For the productive suffixes and their stem changes, begin with the comparative; this page concentrates on forms that must be learned as separate paradigms and on adjective–adverb contrasts.

Four core irregular adjective paradigms

Learn all three degrees as a unit:

PositiveComparativeSuperlativeMeaning
добарбољинајбољиgood — better — best
великвећинајвећиbig — bigger — biggest
малимањинајмањиsmall — smaller — smallest
заогоринајгориevil/bad — worse — worst

Мањи стан има бољи распоред и већи балкон.

The smaller apartment has a better layout and a bigger balcony.

Најмања грешка сада може да изазове много већи проблем касније.

The smallest mistake now can cause a much bigger problem later.

Његов други предлог био је гори од првог, али трећи је био најбољи.

His second proposal was worse than the first, but the third was the best.

The positive зао usually describes moral badness: зао човек “an evil person.” Гори and најгори have a much broader modern range and commonly compare bad quality, outcomes, behavior, and circumstances.

Лош also has the regular forms лошији, најлошији. They overlap with гори, најгори, especially in quality judgments. Лошији резултат often means a result lower in quality or score; гори резултат can sound more broadly unfavorable or more emphatic. This is a tendency, not a rigid semantic split, and both occur in neutral standard Serbian.

Овогодишњи резултати су лошији од прошлогодишњих, а март је био најгори месец.

This year’s results are worse than last year’s, and March was the worst month.

💡
Do not force a one-to-one English distinction between лошији and гори. Learn the productive family лош — лошији — најлошији and the high-frequency suppletive pair гори — најгори, then notice their preferred collocations.

Irregular comparatives still agree fully

An unpredictable stem does not create an invariant adjective. Бољи, већи, мањи, гори decline like other long-form comparatives and have no short masculine counterparts.

RoleMasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativeбољи кандидатбоља понудабоље решењебољи услови
Genitiveбољег кандидатабоље понудебољег решењабољих услова
Dative/locativeбољем кандидатубољој понудибољем решењубољим условима
Accusativeбољег кандидатабољу понудубоље решењебоље услове
Instrumentalбољим кандидатомбољом понудомбољим решењембољим условима

The accusative masculine example is animate; an inanimate noun would match nominative, as in купили смо бољи рачунар.

Бољој кандидаткињи понудили су већу плату и боље услове.

They offered the better female candidate a higher salary and better conditions.

С мањим тимом смо за краће време постигли бољи резултат.

With a smaller team, we achieved a better result in less time.

Ова сала је већа, али су оне две просторије светлије.

This hall is bigger, but those two rooms are brighter.

Predicative adjectives agree too. Feminine сала selects већа; feminine plural просторије selects светлије. Position does not alter the form into an English-style invariant comparative.

Adverbs compare without agreement

Many manner adverbs share their positive form with the neuter singular adjective and their comparative with the neuter comparative adjective. Their function differs:

Positive adverbComparativeSuperlative
брзобрженајбрже
тихотишенајтише
лаколакшенајлакше
тешкотеженајтеже
раноранијенајраније
каснокаснијенајкасније

Нови програм се брже покреће, тише ради и лакше се ажурира.

The new program starts faster, runs more quietly, and updates more easily.

Ако кренемо раније, стићи ћемо брже и лакше ћемо наћи место.

If we leave earlier, we’ll arrive faster and find a seat more easily.

Nothing in брже, тише, лакше agrees with програм. The words modify verbs. Changing the subject to a feminine or plural noun would not change those adverbs.

Compare the same surface form in two functions:

Треба нам брже решење, јер сада морамо да реагујемо брже.

We need a faster solution because we now have to react faster.

The first брже is a neuter adjective agreeing with решење. The second is an adverb modifying реагујемо. Agreement and syntactic position identify the function, not the form alone.

💡
Ask what the comparative modifies. A noun requires adjective agreement; a verb, adjective, or another adverb takes an invariable adverb.

Suppletive adverbs of quality and quantity

Several very frequent adverbs use irregular stems:

PositiveComparativeSuperlativeCore use
добробољенајбољеwell
лошелошије / горенајлошије / најгореbadly
многовишенајвишеmuch/more/most
маломањенајмањеlittle/less/least
далекодаљенајдаљеfar/farther/farthest
близуближенајближеnear/nearer/nearest

После одмора радим боље, правим мање грешака и много се лакше концентришем.

After a break, I work better, make fewer mistakes, and concentrate much more easily.

Марија живи ближе центру, али путује даље од нас кад иде на посао.

Marija lives closer to the center, but travels farther than we do when she goes to work.

Ближе commonly takes a dative goal/reference such as центру; даље од takes од + genitive, here нас. Government belongs to the whole expression, not to the English word “to” or “than.”

Виши and више are different

The adjective виши means “higher/taller” and agrees: виши спрат, виша полица, више брдо, виши трошкови. The adverb више can mean “more” as the comparative of много, or “higher” as the comparative of високо.

На вишем спрату има више светла, али лифт иде спорије.

There is more light on the higher floor, but the elevator moves more slowly.

Овај дрон може да се подигне више, а мањи модел може да лети брже.

This drone can rise higher, while the smaller model can fly faster.

Више светла is a quantity expression; може да се подигне више is spatial. Neither use of више agrees. By contrast, locative вишем agrees with спрату.

Comparison standards with adverbs

Adverbs can take од + genitive or a него comparison just like adjectives:

Ивана говори јасније од мене, али ја пишем брже него раније.

Ivana speaks more clearly than I do, but I write faster than before.

The genitive pronoun мене follows од. Него раније compares the current manner with an earlier one. The adverbs remain unchanged throughout.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Decline an irregular comparative

Use бољи лекар as subject, animate object, dative recipient, and instrumental companion.

Бољи лекар слуша пажљиво; тражимо бољег лекара; верујемо бољем лекару; разговарамо с бољим лекаром.

A better doctor listens carefully; we’re looking for a better doctor; we trust a better doctor; we’re talking with a better doctor.

Task 2: Adjective or adverb?

Explain the two forms in each sentence: боље and брже first agree with neuter nouns, then modify verbs.

Пронашли смо боље место и сада боље чујемо; купили смо брже возило и сада стижемо брже.

We found a better seat and now hear better; we bought a faster vehicle and now arrive faster.

Common Mistakes

Regularizing a suppletive form

❌ Овај план је добрији од претходног.

Incorrect — the comparative of добар is suppletive бољи.

✅ Овај план је бољи од претходног.

This plan is better than the previous one.

Leaving an irregular comparative invariant

❌ Тражимо бољи кандидаткињу за ову улогу.

Incorrect — feminine accusative requires бољу кандидаткињу.

✅ Тражимо бољу кандидаткињу за ову улогу.

We’re looking for a better female candidate for this role.

Making an adverb agree with the subject

❌ Јелена трчи бржа од мене.

Incorrect — брже modifies the verb трчи and does not agree with Јелена.

✅ Јелена трчи брже од мене.

Jelena runs faster than I do.

Confusing виши with више

❌ На више спрату плаћамо виши за грејање.

Incorrect — the adjective must be locative вишем; the quantity adverb is више.

✅ На вишем спрату плаћамо више за грејање.

On the higher floor, we pay more for heating.

Doubling comparison marking

❌ После надоградње програм ради више брже.

Incorrect — брже already means “faster”; do not add више.

✅ После надоградње програм ради много брже.

After the upgrade, the program runs much faster.

Key Takeaways

  • Memorize добар — бољи, велик — већи, мали — мањи, зао — гори.
  • Лошији and гори overlap, but belong to different morphological families and collocational tendencies.
  • Irregular comparative adjectives still agree and decline like other long-form comparatives.
  • Comparative adverbs are invariable; many look like neuter comparative adjectives.
  • Keep adjective виши separate from adverb/quantifier више.
