Relational Adjectives in -ski

Relational adjectives classify a noun by origin, field, institution, place, or other connection: градски превоз “city/public transport,” студентски дом “student residence,” српски језик “Serbian language.” Their characteristic endings are -ски, -чки, -шки.

They answer “pertaining to what?” more often than “what is it like?” That semantic difference explains two important grammatical facts: these adjectives have only the long/definite-type paradigm, and genuinely relational meanings normally do not compare.

What -ски adjectives express

One English noun can often modify another without changing: student card, city bus, sports center. Serbian usually turns the classifying noun into an agreeing adjective.

RelationSerbian adjective phraseMeaning
placeбеоградске улицеBelgrade streets
institution/groupстудентска картицаstudent card
domainспортски центарsports center
language/national connectionсрпски језикSerbian language
period or fieldисторијски изворhistorical source

Студентска картица важи и у градском превозу.

The student card is also valid on public transport.

У спортском центру отворен је нови затворени базен.

A new indoor pool has opened at the sports center.

Истраживачи су упоредили историјске изворе и савремене новинске текстове.

The researchers compared historical sources and contemporary newspaper texts.

The adjective does not necessarily identify a possessor. Студентска картица is a type of card intended for or associated with students; a particular student may not yet own it. A specific owner is more naturally expressed by a possessive adjective or genitive: Маркова картица, картица тог студента.

💡
Translate the relationship, not the English word order. An English noun used as a modifier often becomes an agreeing Serbian adjective: city transport → градски превоз, student rooms → студентске собе.

-Ски is highly productive, but the boundary between the base and suffix can produce an established -чки or -шки form. Sound changes, stem choice, and lexical history interact, so not every derivative can be safely invented.

Српски is the standard form, not србски. In јуначки, фабрички, прашки, the visible result is conventional Serbian word formation, not a case ending. Learn the derivative with a phrase instead of trying to reconstruct it letter by letter.

Прашки трамваји и београдски аутобуси имају различите системе наплате.

Prague trams and Belgrade buses have different fare systems.

Фабричка цена не укључује трошкове превоза до градског складишта.

The factory price does not include transport costs to the city warehouse.

For broader derivational patterns, see adjective suffixes. The productive family helps recognition, but a reliable dictionary remains necessary for an unfamiliar place name or a base with several possible stems.

Lowercase after proper names

Adjectives in -ски/-чки/-шки derived from place names, peoples, and countries are normally lowercase: београдски, нишки, српски, француски, европски. This differs from English Serbian, French, European.

На курсу читамо српске приповетке и француске есеје у преводу.

In the course, we read Serbian short stories and French essays in translation.

An initial capital can appear because the adjective begins a sentence or forms the first word of an official name. That does not change the underlying lowercase rule. The capitalization guide covers official names separately.

Full agreement across gender, number, and case

Relational adjectives decline. English student remains unchanged in student card, student housing, with student groups; Serbian студентски changes throughout the phrase.

Instrumentalстудентским домомстудентском картицомстудентским питањемстудентским домовима

О студентском дому разговарали смо са студентским представницима.

We discussed the student residence with the student representatives.

Без градске дозволе не можемо да поставимо летњу башту.

Without a city permit, we cannot set up an outdoor café area.

За фабричку халу наручили су нова противпожарна врата.

They ordered new fire doors for the factory hall.

The phrases show locative студентском дому, instrumental plural студентским представницима, genitive feminine градске дозволе, and accusative feminine фабричку халу. The relational meaning stays stable while agreement identifies the role.

💡
Keep the derivational core and inflection separate: студент-ск- builds the relation; endings such as -и, -а, -о, -ог, -ој, -им express agreement.

Only the long/definite-type form

Adjectives in -ски/-чки/-шки normally have only the long form: градски, not градск; фабрички, not фабричак; прашки, not прашак. They keep this morphology attributively and predicatively.

Овај дом је студентски, а суседна зграда је приватна.

This residence is for students, while the neighboring building is private.

Calling the form “definite” reflects the historical adjective system, but студентски дом can be “a student residence” or “the student residence” according to context. The ending -и is not a Serbian equivalent of English the.

The normal attributive position is before the noun. Postposition can be stylistically marked or contrastive; it does not create an article distinction. See attributive and predicative adjective use for word-order effects.

Relational meanings normally do not compare

A residence either belongs to the category “student residence” or it does not; a permit is municipal or it is not. Accordingly, purely relational студентски, градски, дрвени normally lack meaningful comparatives.

When a relational adjective develops a qualitative meaning, comparison becomes possible. Пријатељски can mean “friendly,” so пријатељскији тон “a friendlier tone” is natural. Филмски can mean “cinematic/dramatic,” allowing филмскији призор in evaluative language. Јуначки can mean “heroic,” not merely “pertaining to a hero.”

Други имејл је написан пријатељскијим тоном и зато делује убедљивије.

The second email is written in a friendlier tone and therefore sounds more convincing.

This does not make студентскији дом the ordinary comparative of студентски дом. The comparison is licensed by a qualitative reading, not by the suffix alone.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Derive and agree

Build relational adjectives from Београд, фабрика, спорт, Праг, then put them with улице in nominative plural or центар in locative singular as appropriate.

Шетали смо београдским и прашким улицама, а ручали смо у новом спортском центру поред фабричке хале.

We walked through Belgrade and Prague streets, and had lunch in the new sports center beside the factory hall.

Task 2: Relation or quality?

Decide why one adjective resists comparison while the other permits it.

Ово је студентски дом, а не приватни хотел; нова порука има пријатељскији тон од старе.

This is a student residence, not a private hotel; the new message has a friendlier tone than the old one.

Студентски classifies the residence; пријатељскији grades a qualitative manner.

Common Mistakes

Copying the English noun modifier unchanged

❌ Показала сам студент картицу на улазу.

Incorrect — Serbian requires the agreeing relational adjective студентску.

✅ Показала сам студентску картицу на улазу.

I showed my student card at the entrance.

Using the wrong established derivative

❌ Београдчки превоз је данас успорен због радова.

Incorrect — the standard adjective from Београд is београдски.

✅ Београдски превоз је данас успорен због радова.

Belgrade public transport is running slowly today because of roadworks.

Preserving б in српски

❌ На факултету учи србски језик и књижевност.

Incorrect — the standard derivative is српски, with п.

✅ На факултету учи српски језик и књижевност.

At university, she studies Serbian language and literature.

Capitalizing a nationality adjective like English

❌ У библиотеци сам нашла Српски превод романа.

Incorrect — nationality and language adjectives in -ски are lowercase mid-sentence.

✅ У библиотеци сам нашла српски превод романа.

I found a Serbian translation of the novel in the library.

Ignoring case agreement

❌ Живимо близу студентски дома.

Incorrect — близу governs genitive, requiring студентског дома.

✅ Живимо близу студентског дома.

We live near the student residence.

Key Takeaways

  • -Ски/-чки/-шки adjectives express classification or relation: градски, фабрички, прашки.
  • Derived adjectives from proper names are normally lowercase: београдски, српски, европски.
  • The adjective agrees fully with its noun across gender, number, case, and animacy.
  • Relational adjectives have only the long/definite-type form, which is not an article.
  • Pure relations normally resist comparison; qualitative extensions such as пријатељскији can compare.
