Attributive vs Predicative Use

An attributive adjective lives inside a noun phrase: нова уредница “a/the new editor.” A predicative adjective is linked to a subject or object by a verb: Уредница је нова “The editor is new.” English uses mostly the same unchanging adjective in both roles; Serbian changes the adjective for agreement and, in masculine singular qualitative predicates, normally selects the short form.

The distinction affects case, word order, and meaning. It also explains why Марко је дежуран describes Marko's current duty, while Марко је дежурни identifies him as “the one on duty.” The morphology behind that contrast is covered in Definite vs Indefinite Adjectives.

Attributive Adjectives Belong to the Noun Phrase

An attributive adjective agrees with its noun in gender, number, and case. The noun phrase's governor chooses the case, and that case spreads across the modifiers.

Нова уредница је представила амбициозан план.

The new editor presented an ambitious plan.

Нова is feminine nominative with the subject уредница. Амбициозан is masculine inanimate accusative with план and introduces a quality in a new noun phrase.

После кратког састанка разговарао сам са новом уредницом.

After the short meeting, I spoke with the new editor.

После requires genitive кратког састанка; са requires instrumental новом уредницом. English leaves short and new unchanged, but Serbian marks the two relationships on the adjectives.

Multiple attributive words all agree with the same head:

О овој важној одлуци обавестићемо све запослене сутра.

We will inform all employees about this important decision tomorrow.

Овој and важној are feminine locative singular because both modify одлуци after о.

💡
Treat an attributive phrase as one agreement unit. Once the head noun is locative feminine singular, every agreeing demonstrative and adjective must carry that same feature bundle.

Neutral Placement Is Before the Noun

The unmarked order is adjective + noun: тиха улица, занимљива књига, нови рачунар. Unlike in English, moving an adjective after the noun does not systematically express a contrast like “the people responsible” versus “the responsible people.”

Post-nominal adjectives occur, but they are marked or structurally motivated:

  • fixed names and epithets: Александар Велики;
  • formal/administrative phrases with a long modifier: кандидати пријављени на конкурс;
  • literary or poetic emphasis: ноћ тиха и хладна;
  • afterthought or contrast in speech, usually with a pause.

Кандидати пријављени на конкурс добиће одговор до петка.

The candidates registered for the competition will receive a response by Friday. (formal/administrative)

Here the participial phrase пријављени на конкурс follows the noun because it carries its own complement. In ordinary description, use the neutral pre-nominal order.

Изабрали смо миран хотел далеко од главног пута.

We chose a quiet hotel far from the main road.

Word order can highlight information, but it is not a substitute for the adjective's case ending or long–short morphology.

Predicative Adjectives After бити

With бити “to be,” an ordinary descriptive predicate agrees with the subject in gender and number and appears in the nominative. A qualitative masculine singular adjective normally takes the short form.

Хотел је миран, соба је пространа, а двориште је тихо.

The hotel is quiet, the room is spacious, and the courtyard is peaceful.

The three predicates are masculine миран, feminine пространа, and neuter тихо. Only the masculine singular visibly exposes the short–long contrast.

Прозори су отворени, али су врата још затворена.

The windows are open, but the door is still closed.

Прозори is masculine plural, so the participial adjective is отворени. Врата is grammatically neuter plural even when English translates it as singular “door,” so the predicate is затворена.

Predicative agreement can identify an omitted or ambiguous referent:

Фасцикла је лежала поред регистратора; била је црвена и лако смо је нашли.

The folder was lying beside the binder; it was red, so we found it easily.

Feminine била, црвена, and је point back to фасцикла, not masculine регистратор. Serbian gives the listener grammatical cues that English it was red does not.

Short Description Versus Long Identification

Compare a genuine property with an identifying or elliptical long form:

Марко је данас дежуран, али није у својој канцеларији.

Marko is on duty today, but he isn't in his office.

Ко је вечерас дежурни? Марко је дежурни.

Who is the person on duty tonight? Marko is the one on duty.

Short дежуран describes Marko's status. Long дежурни stands for дежурни лекар / дежурни радник or identifies the person filling the role. The same distinction appears with ordinary qualitative adjectives:

Овај телефон је нов, а онај на столу је стари.

This phone is new, and the one on the table is the old one.

Нов predicates a quality of телефон. Стари is elliptical: “the old one.” Translating both merely as English is old/new hides the Serbian structure.

The long form is also normal when an adjective has only a long-type paradigm or when the sentence contrasts labels:

Ово је сутрашњи састанак, не данашњи.

This is tomorrow's meeting, not today's.

This is identification between two scheduled items, not a free use of a long qualitative predicate.

💡
After је, ask what the adjective is doing. If it states a quality, use the short masculine singular form: Пут је дуг. If it identifies “the X one” or replaces a noun, a long form can be correct: Овај је стари.

Predicative Use Beyond бити

Adjectives can remain predicative with verbs meaning “become,” “remain,” “seem,” or “return in a state.” Subject-oriented predicates normally agree with the subject in nominative.

После дугог разговора Ана је остала мирна, а Петар се вратио забринут.

After the long conversation, Ana remained calm, while Petar came back worried.

Мирна agrees with feminine Ана; забринут agrees with masculine Петар. The adjectives describe a state associated with the event rather than forming noun phrases.

Some verbs assign a different case to an object-oriented predicate. With сматрати “consider,” instrumental is standard:

Сматрамо овај предлог корисним, али прескупим.

We consider this proposal useful but too expensive.

The object is accusative овај предлог, while the predicative adjectives are instrumental masculine singular корисним, прескупим. This is a genuine case construction, not optional stylistic agreement.

With perception/result constructions, the secondary predicate can agree with the object in accusative:

Затекли смо канцеларију празну и сва светла угашена.

We found the office empty and all the lights switched off.

Feminine accusative празну agrees with канцеларију; neuter plural accusative угашена agrees with светла.

Adjective Position Does Not Translate English Position Mechanically

English distinguishes attributive an asleep child (normally impossible) from predicative the child is asleep, and many adjectives have position-sensitive meanings. Serbian lexical restrictions are its own. For example, будан works predicatively and attributively when semantically appropriate: будно дете, дете је будно. Conversely, relational adjectives such as градски ordinarily classify a noun and are less natural as plain quality predicates.

Градски аутобус је пун, али је приградски скоро празан.

The city bus is full, but the suburban one is almost empty.

Attributive градски classifies the first bus. Predicative-looking приградски in the second clause is actually substantivized: приградски аутобус is understood. Predicates пун and празан state qualities.

Practice Task 1: Name the Function

Identify each adjective as attributive, descriptive predicative, or substantivized.

Нова уредница је строга, али праведна.

The new editor is strict but fair. Answer: нова is attributive; строга and праведна are descriptive predicates agreeing with уредница.

Стари лифт не ради, па користимо нови.

The old elevator is not working, so we're using the new one. Answer: стари is attributive; нови is substantivized and replaces нови лифт.

Practice Task 2: Let Agreement Resolve Reference

Use the predicate form to identify the intended noun.

Књига је била поред телефона, али је била мокра.

The book was beside the phone, but it was wet. Answer: feminine мокра identifies књига, not masculine телефон.

Писмо је стигло са фотографијама; биле су оштећене.

The letter arrived with photographs; they were damaged. Answer: feminine plural биле оштећене refers to фотографије, not neuter singular писмо.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving an attributive adjective invariant.

❌ Разговарамо са нов уредницом после ручка.

Incorrect — са requires instrumental, and feminine уредницом requires новом.

✅ Разговарамо са новом уредницом после ручка.

We're talking with the new editor after lunch.

2. Using a long form for a simple masculine predicate.

❌ Извештај је дугачки и прилично нејасан.

Incorrect for ordinary qualities — use short дугачак and нејасан.

✅ Извештај је дугачак и прилично нејасан.

The report is long and rather unclear.

3. Assuming post-nominal position is the neutral English-like option.

❌ Купили смо сто дрвени за трпезарију.

Unnatural in neutral prose — use the attributive adjective before the noun; post-nominal placement is marked.

✅ Купили смо дрвени сто за трпезарију.

We bought a wooden table for the dining room.

4. Following the English referent's gender or number.

❌ Тешка врата је остало откључан преко ноћи.

Incorrect — врата is neuter plural, so the auxiliary, participle, and predicate adjective must all show plural agreement.

✅ Тешка врата су остала откључана преко ноћи.

The heavy door remained unlocked overnight.

5. Using nominative after сматрати.

❌ Сматрамо овај рок нереалан.

Incorrect — the object predicate after сматрати is instrumental: нереалним.

✅ Сматрамо овај рок нереалним.

We consider this deadline unrealistic.

Key Takeaways

  • Attributive adjectives form part of a noun phrase and share its gender, number, and case.
  • The neutral position of a simple attributive adjective is before the noun; post-nominal placement is marked or structurally motivated.
  • Ordinary qualitative predicates use nominative agreement and the short masculine singular form.
  • A long form after the copula usually identifies “the X one,” replaces an omitted noun, or belongs to a long-only lexical class.
  • Secondary predicates can take the case required by their construction, as in instrumental сматрамо предлог корисним.
  • Serbian agreement can reveal which noun a predicate refers to even when English uses an invariant adjective.
