Adjective Declension: Hard Stems

Hard-stem adjectives provide the main Serbian adjective paradigm. Their signature is -о in the neuter nominative/accusative singular and -ог, -ом in the masculine/neuter oblique singular: ново, новог, новом. This page uses нов / нови “new” to show all seven cases, then explains how the endings operate inside complete noun phrases.

The central principle is agreement, not matching visible endings. In новог рачуна, adjective and noun have different endings, but both are genitive singular masculine. Review how agreement spreads across a phrase in The Agreement Principle; the choice between нов and нови is developed in Definite vs Indefinite Adjectives.

The Productive Definite-Type Singular Paradigm

The long or definite-type paradigm is the productive everyday set in contemporary Serbian, including in many contexts that are semantically indefinite.

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter
Nominativeновинованово
Genitiveновог(а)новеновог(а)
Dativeновом(е)новојновом(е)
Accusativeнови / новог(а)новуново
Vocativeновинованово
Instrumentalновимновомновим
Locativeновом(е)новојновом(е)

Masculine and neuter share genitive, dative, instrumental, and locative forms. Feminine has the compact sequence -а, -е, -ој, -у, -ом. The masculine accusative is the only cell with two choices: inanimate nouns use the nominative-type form, while animate nouns use the genitive-type form.

Сачувао сам нови уговор у посебној фасцикли.

I saved the new contract in a separate folder.

Јутрос сам упознао новог правника из нашег тима.

This morning I met the new lawyer from our team.

Уговор is inanimate, so accusative нови уговор copies the nominative phrase. Правник is animate, so accusative новог правника copies the genitive pattern. This animacy contrast applies to every masculine singular adjective, not only нов.

💡
For masculine accusative singular, decide animacy before choosing the adjective ending: thing → nominative pattern; person or animal → genitive pattern.

The Productive Plural Paradigm

Plural oblique forms merge extensively.

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter
Nominativeновиновенова
Genitiveновихновихнових
Dativeновимновимновим
Accusativeновеновенова
Vocativeновиновенова
Instrumentalновимновимновим
Locativeновимновимновим

All three genders use нових in the genitive plural and новим in the dative, instrumental, and locative plural. Gender remains visible mainly in nominative, accusative, and vocative: masculine нови / нове, feminine нове / нове, neuter нова / нова.

О новим правилима разговараћемо са новим колегама сутра.

We'll discuss the new rules with the new colleagues tomorrow.

Both phrases contain новим, but the first is locative neuter plural after о, while the second is instrumental masculine plural after са. The nouns and governors reveal the case.

Без нових лозинки не можемо да приступимо старим налозима.

Without the new passwords, we cannot access the old accounts.

Без governs genitive, hence нових; приступити governs dative, hence старим налозима. Do not select the adjective ending from its English translation.

Declining Complete Phrases

Here are three matched singular phrases. The endings on adjective and noun need not look alike.

CaseMasculine inanimateFeminineNeuter
Nнови планнова зграданово насеље
Gновог плананове зграденовог насеља
Dновом плануновој зградиновом насељу
Aнови планнову зградуново насеље
Iновим планомновом зградомновим насељем
Lновом плануновој зградиновом насељу

Прилаз новом насељу води поред нове зграде.

The access road to the new neighborhood runs past the new building.

Dative новом насељу is licensed by the relational meaning of прилаз, while поред governs genitive нове зграде. The adjective copies the noun's grammatical features, not the noun's literal ending.

На састанку смо се бавили новим планом и новом проценом трошкова.

At the meeting we dealt with the new plan and the new cost estimate.

The instrumental masculine новим планом contrasts with instrumental feminine новом проценом.

The Traditional Short Declension

Qualitative hard-stem adjectives also have a short, indefinite paradigm. Its most productive contrast is masculine nominative and inanimate accusative нов, beside long нови. Traditional masculine/neuter singular oblique forms are noun-like:

CaseMasculine shortNeuter shortModern long-type counterpart
Nominativeновновонови / ново
Genitiveновановановог(а)
Dativeновуновуновом(е)
Accusativeнов / новановонови / новог(а), ново
Vocativeновиновонови / ново
Instrumentalновимновимновим
Locativeновуновуновом(е)

In contemporary standard usage, the long-type oblique forms overwhelmingly serve both definite and indefinite meanings: тражим новог станара, разговарам с новим станаром. Short genitive нова and dative/locative нову are structurally important and occur in set expressions, older writing, elevated literary language, and some regional usage, but learners should not treat them as the default conversational paradigm.

Из ведра неба почела је јака киша.

Heavy rain started out of the blue.

The fixed expression из ведра неба preserves short genitive ведра. It is not a reason to produce short oblique endings freely in every new phrase.

Stem Alternations Do Not Change the Endings

Some dictionary forms contain a fleeting а or final о that disappears once an ending is attached:

  • добар — добра — добро — добри — доброг
  • миран — мирна — мирно — мирни — мирног
  • светао — светла — светло — светли — светлог

После мирног разговора нашли смо добро решење.

After a calm conversation, we found a good solution.

The stems are мирн- and добр- before endings. Forms such as мираног or добарог are impossible because the fleeting vowel belongs only to the endingless masculine short form.

Optional Final Vowels

Masculine/neuter genitive -ог may be expanded to -ога, and dative/locative -ом to -оме: новог / новога, новом / новоме. The longer variants are fully standard but are more frequent in formal, literary, rhythmic, or contrastive prose. They do not create a new case or a different degree of definiteness.

Од новога директора очекује се јасан план рада.

A clear work plan is expected from the new director. (formal, with the extended genitive form новога)

In neutral conversation, од новог директора is the ordinary choice.

Learn the compact working skeleton -ог, -ом, -им, -их. It covers most masculine/neuter oblique singular and all plural oblique adjective forms.

Practice Task 1: Build the Case Phrase

Put нов and the noun into the case required by the sentence.

Чекамо одговор од новог добављача.

We're waiting for an answer from the new supplier. Answer: од + genitive; animate masculine singular gives новог добављача.

Документа су у новој зеленој фасцикли.

The documents are in the new green folder. Answer: у marks location and takes locative; both feminine adjectives end in -ој.

Practice Task 2: Read Syncretic Forms

Explain the identical adjective endings.

Помажемо новим ученицама и разговарамо с новим наставницима.

We're helping the new female students and talking with the new teachers. Answer: новим is dative feminine plural in the first phrase and instrumental masculine plural in the second.

Нема нових столица ни нових огледала.

There are no new chairs or new mirrors. Answer: нових is genitive plural for both feminine столица and neuter огледала.

Common Mistakes

1. Ignoring masculine animacy.

❌ Позвали су нови саветник на разговор.

Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires новог саветника.

✅ Позвали су новог саветника на разговор.

They invited the new adviser for a meeting.

2. Copying a noun ending onto the adjective.

❌ Не слажем се са новом предлогом.

Incorrect — masculine instrumental requires новим, although the noun ends in -ом.

✅ Не слажем се са новим предлогом.

I don't agree with the new proposal.

3. Confusing genitive plural and locative plural.

❌ Причамо о нових условима уговора.

Incorrect — о governs locative here, so the adjective must be новим.

✅ Причамо о новим условима уговора.

We're talking about the new terms of the contract.

4. Retaining a fleeting vowel before an ending.

❌ Задовољни смо добарим резултатом.

Incorrect — добар has the stem добр- before endings, so instrumental is добрим.

✅ Задовољни смо добрим резултатом.

We're satisfied with the good result.

5. Treating optional extended endings as different cases.

❌ Пришао је новога колеги после седнице.

Incorrect — новога is genitive, but прићи requires dative новом колеги.

✅ Пришао је новом колеги после седнице.

He approached the new colleague after the session.
