Soft-stem adjectives use е where hard-stem adjectives use о in several masculine/neuter endings. Compare hard ново, новог, новом with soft вруће, врућег, врућем. The agreement system is otherwise the same: gender, number, case, and masculine animacy still control the form.
The most reliable way to recognize this class is to learn the masculine, feminine, and neuter forms together: врућ — врућа — вруће, туђ — туђа — туђе, свеж — свежа — свеже, лош — лоша — лоше. The neuter -е tells you to expect -ег and -ем. Compare the -о/-ог/-ом set on Hard-Stem Adjective Declension.
The Soft Singular Paradigm
The table gives the productive long or definite-type forms of врућ / врући “hot.” These are the ordinary oblique forms in contemporary Serbian.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | врући | врућа | вруће |
| Genitive | врућег(а) | вруће | врућег(а) |
| Dative | врућем(у) | врућој | врућем(у) |
| Accusative | врући / врућег(а) | врућу | вруће |
| Vocative | врући | врућа | вруће |
| Instrumental | врућим | врућом | врућим |
| Locative | врућем(у) | врућој | врућем(у) |
The feminine endings do not distinguish hard and soft classes: нова — нове — новој and врућа — вруће — врућој follow the same feminine pattern. The contrast is concentrated in neuter -о/-е and masculine/neuter -ог/-ег, -ом/-ем.
Сипај вруће млеко полако да се не опечеш.
Pour the hot milk slowly so you don't burn yourself.
Деца су се обрадовала свежем снегу чим су устала.
The children were delighted by the fresh snow as soon as they got up.
Neuter accusative вруће млеко matches the nominative; dative neuter свежем снегу has the soft ending -ем.
The Soft Plural Paradigm
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | врући | вруће | врућа |
| Genitive | врућих | врућих | врућих |
| Dative | врућим | врућим | врућим |
| Accusative | вруће | вруће | врућа |
| Vocative | врући | вруће | врућа |
| Instrumental | врућим | врућим | врућим |
| Locative | врућим | врућим | врућим |
Plural endings are the same structural set as for hard stems: genitive -их, and dative/instrumental/locative -им. The adjective stem remains soft, but no о/е choice is visible in those endings.
После врућих дана стигле су свеже ноћи.
After the hot days, cool fresh nights arrived.
Са млађим колегама разговарамо о бољим условима рада.
We are talking with the younger colleagues about better working conditions.
Млађим is instrumental plural, while бољим is locative plural. Comparatives such as млађи and бољи use long-type soft endings and have no short comparative counterpart.
Hard and Soft Side by Side
The two classes differ only in a small, predictable part of the paradigm.
| Form | Hard: нов | Soft: врућ |
|---|---|---|
| neuter N/A/V singular | ново | вруће |
| masc./neut. genitive singular | новог | врућег |
| masc./neut. dative/locative singular | новом | врућем |
| masc./neut. instrumental singular | новим | врућим |
| genitive plural | нових | врућих |
У топлом млеку се шећер брже раствара него у хладном.
Sugar dissolves faster in warm milk than in cold milk.
Квасац не преживљава у врућем млеку, зато сачекај да се охлади.
Yeast does not survive in hot milk, so wait for it to cool down.
Hard топао gives locative топлом, while soft врућ gives врућем. Notice also the fleeting-vowel stem топл-; hard/soft class and stem alternations are separate issues.
Masculine Animacy Still Matters
Soft endings do not remove the animate–inanimate split in the masculine accusative singular.
Не дирај врући тигањ без рукавице.
Don't touch the hot frying pan without an oven mitt.
Деца су помазила туђег пса тек када је власник пришао.
The children petted someone else's dog only after the owner came over.
Inanimate тигањ takes accusative врући, matching the nominative. Animate пас takes туђег пса, matching the genitive. The adjective ending alone can therefore reveal whether the noun is being treated as animate.
Short Forms and Modern Leveling
Qualitative soft adjectives have a short masculine nominative: врућ, туђ, свеж, лош. They behave like other short qualitative forms in predicative descriptions.
Чај је још врућ, а хлеб је потпуно свеж.
The tea is still hot, and the bread is completely fresh.
The traditional short masculine/neuter singular oblique pattern is врућа in the genitive and врућу in the dative/locative, with врућим in the instrumental. As with hard adjectives, contemporary Serbian normally uses productive long-type obliques врућег, врућем for both identifiable and non-identifiable referents.
Треба нам свежег хлеба за доручак.
We need some fresh bread for breakfast.
The partitive genitive phrase is semantically indefinite, yet ordinary contemporary Serbian uses свежег, not the historical short свежа.
Lexical Classes and Comparison
Not every adjective with a soft paradigm freely contrasts short and long forms. Relational forms such as дечји “children's/for children” and spatial adjectives such as доњи “lower” occur in the long type. Their oblique forms still display the same soft endings: дечјег лекара, на доњем спрату.
Ординација дечјег лекара налази се на доњем спрату.
The pediatrician's office is on the lower floor.
Comparatives also use this pattern: бољи — боља — боље; бољег; бољем. That is an inflectional fact, not proof that the positive adjective belongs to the same stem class: hard добар has suppletive comparative бољи.
Нисмо нашли боље место за миран разговор.
We didn't find a better place for a quiet conversation.
Agreement Can Identify the Referent
When several nouns are possible, gender and number narrow the reference.
Пробао сам супу и хлеб; супа је била врућа, а хлеб свеж.
I tried the soup and the bread; the soup was hot, and the bread was fresh.
Feminine врућа points back to супа, while masculine short свеж points back to хлеб. English adjective forms do not change, so this information must be learned as part of Serbian agreement.
Practice Task 1: Choose о or е
Complete the soft adjective with the case ending required by the sentence.
Због лошег времена отказали су вечерњи концерт.
Because of the bad weather, they canceled the evening concert. Answer: soft лош gives genitive neuter лошег with времена.
О туђем проблему је лако давати савете.
It is easy to give advice about someone else's problem. Answer: о + locative; soft туђ gives туђем.
Practice Task 2: Track Gender and Animacy
Explain each accusative form.
Склони врућу шерпу и врући плех са стола.
Move the hot pot and the hot baking tray off the table. Answer: feminine accusative врућу; masculine inanimate accusative врући.
Видели смо млађег глумца и његову старију сестру испред позоришта.
We saw the younger actor and his older sister outside the theater. Answer: animate masculine млађег; feminine accusative старију.
Common Mistakes
1. Applying a hard ending to a soft stem.
❌ Склони шољу са врућог шпорета.
Incorrect — soft врућ requires genitive врућег, not hard-type врућог.
✅ Склони шољу са врућег шпорета.
Move the cup off the hot stove.
2. Using -ом instead of -ем in masculine/neuter locative.
❌ Размишљам о бољом решењу за распоред.
Incorrect — soft comparative бољи has locative neuter бољем.
✅ Размишљам о бољем решењу за распоред.
I'm thinking about a better solution for the schedule.
3. Forgetting feminine agreement because English is invariant.
❌ Донела је свеж хлеб и свеже салату.
Incorrect — feminine accusative салату requires свежу.
✅ Донела је свеж хлеб и свежу салату.
She brought fresh bread and a fresh salad.
4. Ignoring masculine animacy.
❌ Позвали смо млађи уредник да нам се придружи.
Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires млађег уредника.
✅ Позвали смо млађег уредника да нам се придружи.
We invited the younger editor to join us.
5. Using a long form for a simple qualitative predicate.
❌ Ваздух је свежи после кише.
Incorrect for a plain property — predicative masculine singular uses short свеж.
✅ Ваздух је свеж после кише.
The air is fresh after the rain.
