Serbian masculine nouns make one case distinction that English nouns do not: in the singular accusative, the form depends on grammatical animacy. A typical animate masculine has accusative equal to genitive—видим студента—while a typical inanimate masculine has accusative equal to nominative—видим телефон.
This contrast is narrow but powerful. It applies to masculine singular noun phrases, not to all nouns and not to every number. Unless explicitly labeled, the examples below are neutral contemporary standard Serbian.
The core contrast
For the common masculine consonant-stem pattern, compare студент “student” and телефон “telephone”:
| Case | Animate: студент | Inanimate: телефон |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative singular | студент | телефон |
| Genitive singular | студента | телефона |
| Accusative singular | студента | телефон |
The direct object after видети must therefore change in two different ways:
Видео сам студента испред библиотеке.
I saw the student in front of the library.
Видео сам телефон испод стола.
I saw the phone under the table.
The first -а does not mean “of the student” here. The same surface form serves both genitive and animate accusative. The verb and the sentence structure show that it is accusative. This sharing of a form by two cases is called syncretism.
The ending sits inside the broader masculine noun paradigm; this page isolates the animacy decision that the full table cannot explain by endings alone.
What counts as animate?
Humans and animals are the central animate classes: човек, лекар, Милан, пас, коњ, врабац. The category is grammatical, not a test of whether something is currently moving or biologically alive. Names for deceased people such as покојник “the deceased” and мртвац “dead man/body” retain animate declension.
Чекамо лекара већ скоро сат времена.
We have been waiting for the doctor for almost an hour.
Комшија је удомио напуштеног пса.
The neighbor adopted an abandoned dog.
Јуче смо посетили Милана у болници.
Yesterday we visited Milan in the hospital.
Plants are conventionally inanimate in Serbian grammar: храст, бор, купус. Collective nouns naming groups of living beings are also normally inanimate: народ “people/nation,” чопор “pack,” скуп “gathering.”
Посадили су млади храст поред капије.
They planted a young oak beside the gate.
У даљини смо угледали цео чопор.
In the distance we caught sight of the whole pack.
English meaning helps with the central human/animal contrast, but it cannot decide every lexical case. Learn borderline nouns from reliable usage rather than inventing a biological rule.
Grammatical classification can differ from the scene
Animacy belongs to the noun as used, not to a momentary physical condition. A portrait does not become animate because it depicts a person, and a deceased person does not become grammatically inanimate. Compare the noun selected for the referent:
На зиду сам видео краља на старом портрету.
On the wall I saw the king in an old portrait.
На зиду сам видео стари портрет краља.
On the wall I saw an old portrait of the king.
In the first sentence, animate краљ is the object and appears as краља. In the second, inanimate портрет is the object and stays портрет; краља is now genitive inside “portrait of the king.” The same written form can therefore have different case functions, and the surrounding syntax matters.
Collective labels make the same point. Народ refers to people but patterns as inanimate: волим свој народ, not animate свог народа for the direct-object meaning. By contrast, an individual грађанин “citizen” is animate: познајем тог грађанина. This is why “Can it move?” is a poor test. The stable lexical category of the head noun controls the form.
Познајем тог грађанина, али не познајем цео његов народ.
I know that citizen, but I do not know his entire people.
The entire noun phrase follows the contrast
Animacy is visible not only on the noun. Masculine singular adjectives, demonstratives, and adjective-like pronouns take a genitive-shaped accusative with animate nouns and a nominative-shaped accusative with inanimate nouns:
| Function | Animate | Inanimate |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | овај нови студент | овај нови телефон |
| Genitive | овог новог студента | овог новог телефона |
| Accusative | овог новог студента | овај нови телефон |
Позови оног новог колегу из Новог Сада.
Call that new colleague from Novi Sad.
Here колега is a masculine noun ending in -а. Its own declension has accusative колегу, not genitive колеге, but its modifiers still show masculine animate accusative: оног новог. This is an important restriction on the shortcut “animate accusative equals genitive”: the shortcut describes the common masculine paradigm and the agreeing modifiers, but an -а noun keeps its own class ending.
Proper names in the main masculine pattern behave like other animate nouns:
Марко је позвао Николу, а Никола Милана.
Marko called Nikola, and Nikola called Milan.
Никола has the -а accusative Николу; Милан has genitive-shaped accusative Милана. Both are masculine and animate, but their stem classes express the object differently.
The distinction belongs to the singular
In the plural, masculine nouns do not choose between an animate and an inanimate accusative. Both classes normally have nominative plural in -и (sometimes with -ов-/-ев-) and accusative plural in -е:
| Number and case | Animate | Inanimate |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative plural | студенти | телефони |
| Accusative plural | студенте | телефоне |
| Genitive plural | студената | телефона |
Професор је поздравио студенте и искључио телефоне.
The professor greeted the students and switched off the phones.
Both direct objects end in -е. Neither is equal to its genitive plural. Animacy still exists in meaning, but it does not control the plural ending.
Animacy and flexible word order
English identifies subject and object largely by position. Serbian can move an object forward for contrast because its case form remains visible:
Пса је јутрос прегледао ветеринар.
The veterinarian examined the dog this morning.
Пса comes first, but it is accusative; ветеринар is nominative and is therefore the subject. Reversing the endings reverses the roles:
Пас је јутрос угризао ветеринара.
The dog bit the veterinarian this morning.
English speakers should resist translating Serbian word by word from left to right. Read the case-marked noun phrases first, then interpret the information order.
Animacy is not feminine or neuter morphology
The same semantic distinction does not produce this genitive-shaped accusative in feminine or neuter nouns. Compare animate жена and дете:
Видим жену и дете код улаза.
I see a woman and a child by the entrance.
Feminine жена has its class accusative жену; neuter дете has accusative equal to nominative. Calling both referents animate does not override gender and declension class. Serbian morphology is a network: gender selects a paradigm, stem class supplies its endings, and animacy modifies one masculine singular contrast inside that network.
Personal pronouns should not be used as a shortcut to the noun rule. Њега can refer to a man and looks genitive-like in the accusative, but pronouns have their own paradigms and clitic forms such as га. First learn the noun-phrase contrast овај пас — овог пса; then connect it to pronominal forms on their dedicated pages.
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving an animate masculine object in the nominative.
❌ Чекам мој брат испред станице.
Incorrect — брат is a masculine animate direct object, so both modifier and noun need the genitive-shaped accusative.
✅ Чекам свог брата испред станице.
I'm waiting for my brother in front of the station.
2. Giving an inanimate object the animate ending.
❌ За трпезарију смо изабрали округлог стола.
Incorrect — сто is inanimate, so its singular accusative and modifier must have the nominative shape.
✅ За трпезарију смо изабрали округао сто.
We chose a round table for the dining room.
3. Extending the singular syncretism to the plural.
❌ Познајем тих студената са курса.
Incorrect as a direct object — студената is genitive plural, not accusative plural.
✅ Познајем те студенте са курса.
I know those students from the course.
4. Forcing a masculine -а noun to look like a consonant stem.
❌ Данас мењају новог колеге.
Incorrect — колега follows the -а noun declension and has accusative колегу, while the modifier remains masculine animate.
✅ Данас мењају новог колегу.
They are replacing the new colleague today.
Key Takeaways
Masculine singular animacy creates a clear opposition: видим студента but видим телефон. The pattern also appears on agreeing modifiers, yet the noun's own declension still matters, as новог колегу shows. Plants and collective labels are grammatically inanimate, while humans and animals—including words for deceased people—are animate. In the plural, the special opposition disappears: both animate and inanimate masculine objects take the regular accusative plural pattern.
