The accusative marks a noun phrase as the direct object of many verbs and as the complement of several prepositions. Its hardest feature is not one ending but a pattern of shared forms: masculine animate singular accusative matches the genitive, while masculine inanimate and neuter singular accusative match the nominative.
Case belongs to the whole phrase. A noun, demonstrative, adjective, and pronoun must all take compatible forms: видим овог новог студента, not a mixture assembled word by word from English.
The Singular Forms
| Class | Nominative | Genitive | Accusative | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| masculine animate | овај добар студент | овог доброг студента | овог доброг студента | A = G |
| masculine inanimate | овај нови рачун | овог новог рачуна | овај нови рачун | A = N |
| feminine -а | ова нова карта | ове нове карте | ову нову карту | distinct A in -у |
| feminine i-stem | ова тиха ноћ | ове тихе ноћи | ову тиху ноћ | noun A = N; modifiers show A |
| neuter | ово мало место | овог малог места | ово мало место | A = N |
Позвали смо оног искусног мајстора да погледа кров.
We called that experienced tradesman to look at the roof.
Платили смо овај велики рачун још јуче.
We paid this large bill yesterday.
Купила је ону црвену јакну коју је јуче пробала.
She bought the red jacket that she tried on yesterday.
Добро памтим ту необично мирну ноћ.
I remember that unusually peaceful night well.
The animate rule applies specifically to masculine singular forms. It does not make all living direct objects genitive-shaped: feminine сестру and neuter дете follow their own declensions. Masculine nouns in -а also keep their class ending: позивам колегу, while modifiers show masculine animate accusative оног новог колегу.
The Plural Forms
Masculine plural accusative normally ends in -е, whether the noun is animate or inanimate. Feminine and neuter plural accusative usually match their nominative plural.
| Class | Nominative plural | Accusative plural |
|---|---|---|
| masculine animate | ови добри студенти | ове добре студенте |
| masculine inanimate | ови нови рачуни | ове нове рачуне |
| feminine -а | ове нове карте | ове нове карте |
| feminine i-stem | ове тихе ноћи | ове тихе ноћи |
| neuter | ова мала места | ова мала места |
На улазу су проверили све карте и позвали последње путнике.
At the entrance they checked all the tickets and called the last passengers.
The accusative plural путнике does not match genitive plural путника. Animacy no longer chooses between A=N and A=G in the plural.
Direct Objects: The Central Use
Transitive verbs such as видети, читати, купити, чекати, позвати normally take an accusative object. For the full usage pattern, see Accusative: The Direct Object.
Читам нову књигу о архитектури Београда.
I'm reading a new book about Belgrade architecture.
English speakers often rely on order, but Serbian case permits an object to be moved to the front as a topic or contrast.
Ову књигу чита моја сестра, а ону читам ја.
My sister is reading this book, while I am reading that one.
Ову књигу is accusative despite appearing first; моја сестра is nominative. The endings package the roles, and word order packages discourse emphasis.
Prepositions That Govern the Accusative
Several prepositions select accusative. The most important A1 contrast is direction with у or на versus location with the locative.
После ручка идемо у библиотеку, а сада смо у канцеларији.
After lunch we're going to the library, and right now we're in the office.
Стави чаше на горњу полицу; тањири су већ на столу.
Put the glasses on the top shelf; the plates are already on the table.
The destination phrases у библиотеку, на полицу are accusative. Static у канцеларији, на столу are locative. The English preposition may remain “in/on” in both clauses; Serbian changes case because direction and location are different semantic packages.
Other common accusative prepositions include кроз “through,” уз “along/beside,” and several uses of за “for/in/behind.” Learn each construction in context rather than assigning one Serbian case to an English preposition.
Прошли смо кроз стари пролаз и наставили уз реку.
We went through the old passage and continued along the river.
How Syncretism Works
When accusative and another case look identical, the form is not “uncased.” The governing verb or preposition and the sentence role identify it.
Професор види студента на крају ходника.
The professor sees the student at the end of the corridor.
Професора види студент на крају ходника.
The student sees the professor at the end of the corridor.
The first noun in the second sentence is still the object because професора is animate accusative; nominative студент is the subject. The identical genitive-looking form does not mean “of the professor.”
Neuter место shows the opposite syncretism:
Ово место је слободно, али ја тражим мирније место.
This seat is free, but I'm looking for a quieter seat.
The first место is nominative and the second accusative. Sentence structure, not a visible ending, distinguishes them.
Personal Pronouns: Full and Clitic Forms
Personal pronouns have accusative full forms and short clitics: мене/ме, тебе/те, њега/га, њу/је, нас, вас, њих/их. Full forms carry contrast or follow prepositions; short forms normally occupy the Serbian clitic position.
Мене су позвали, али њега нису.
They invited me, but not him.
Милица га познаје још из средње школе.
Milica has known him since high school.
The variant ју is used in environments such as Она ју је позвала, avoiding the sequence је је. Clitic ordering deserves separate treatment on Clitic Forms and је/ју.
Practice Task 1: Choose the Accusative Form
Put the complete phrase into the accusative, then compare the answer.
Тражимо оног младог лекара из ноћне смене.
We are looking for that young doctor from the night shift. Answer: masculine animate singular → оног младог лекара.
Тражимо онај мали кофер с црвеном траком.
We are looking for that small suitcase with a red ribbon. Answer: masculine inanimate singular → онај мали кофер.
Practice Task 2: Identify the Governing Construction
Decide whether the highlighted noun phrase is a direct object or the destination after a preposition.
Сутра селимо архиву у нову зграду.
Tomorrow we're moving the archive into the new building. Answer: архиву is a direct object; у нову зграду is an accusative destination.
Кроз отворен прозор чујем дечји смех.
Through the open window I can hear children's laughter. Answer: кроз governs accusative прозор; смех is the direct object.
Common Mistakes
1. Ignoring masculine animacy across the phrase.
❌ Видела сам онај нови лекар испред ординације.
Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires оног новог лекара.
✅ Видела сам оног новог лекара испред ординације.
I saw that new doctor outside the consulting room.
2. Giving an inanimate masculine object a genitive shape.
❌ Коначно сам пронашао оног плавог кофера.
Incorrect — with this positive verb, the inanimate masculine direct object must have nominative-shaped accusative онај плави кофер.
✅ Коначно сам пронашао онај плави кофер.
I finally found that blue suitcase.
3. Declining only the feminine noun, not its modifiers.
❌ Купила је ова нова хаљину за венчање.
Incorrect — demonstrative and adjective must also be accusative: ову нову хаљину.
✅ Купила је ову нову хаљину за венчање.
She bought this new dress for the wedding.
4. Using locative for movement toward a destination.
❌ После посла идем у библиотеци.
Incorrect — movement into the library requires accusative у библиотеку.
✅ После посла идем у библиотеку.
After work I'm going to the library.
5. Assuming identical forms have identical roles.
❌ Посећујемо селу поред језера сваког лета.
Incorrect — neuter accusative singular equals nominative, so the direct object is село, without a new ending.
✅ Посећујемо село поред језера сваког лета.
We visit the village by the lake every summer.
