Serbian object clitics are short, unstressed pronoun forms that gather near the beginning of their clause. Most have one stable form, but feminine accusative singular alternates between је and ју. The neutral form is је in Видим је “I see her,” while ју prevents a collision with the third-person auxiliary је: Она ју је видела “She saw her.”
This is not optional spelling variation. It is a grammatical response to the contents and order of the clitic cluster.
The Complete Clitic Inventory
| Person | Genitive | Dative | Accusative |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 sg. | ме | ми | ме |
| 2 sg. | те | ти | те |
| 3 sg. masc./neut. | га | му | га |
| 3 sg. fem. | је | јој | је / ју |
| 1 pl. | нас | нам | нас |
| 2 pl. | вас | вам | вас |
| 3 pl. | их | им | их |
| reflexive | се | — | се |
The corresponding full forms are мене/мени, тебе/теби, њега/њему, ње/њој/њу, нас/нама, вас/вама, њих/њима, and reflexive себе/себи/собом. Clitics do not occur after prepositions and cannot carry contrast; use the full forms there. See Clitic vs Full Pronoun Forms.
Без ње не почињемо, али ћемо је сачекати још десет минута.
We're not starting without her, but we'll wait for her for another ten minutes.
Full ње follows без; neutral direct-object clitic је refers back to the same woman.
What је Can Mean
The spelling је has three distinct jobs:
- third-person singular auxiliary/copula: Ана је уморна;
- feminine singular genitive clitic: Нема је данас;
- feminine singular accusative clitic: Ана је види сваког јутра.
Милица је код куће, али је данас нема на мрежи.
Milica is at home, but she isn't online today.
The first је is the copula. The second је belongs to нема as a genitive clitic referring to Milica.
Познајем Јелену из школе и често је виђам у крају.
I know Jelena from school and often see her around the neighborhood.
Here је is accusative. The present-tense verb has no auxiliary је, so there is no collision.
Default Feminine Accusative је
Use је in ordinary present-tense clauses and with auxiliaries other than third-person singular је.
Видим је сваког јутра у истом кафићу.
I see her every morning in the same café.
Позвао сам је чим сам стигао кући.
I called her as soon as I got home.
The perfect has first-person auxiliary сам, so the cluster is сам је. There is no reason to substitute ју.
Петар ће ми је послати чим заврши извештај.
Petar will send it to me as soon as he finishes the report.
Here је refers to a feminine noun understood from context, while ће is the future auxiliary. The order is auxiliary ће, dative ми, accusative је.
Use ју Before Auxiliary је
In the third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је occupies the final place in the cluster. Feminine accusative је changes to ју before it:
Ана ју је позвала после састанка.
Ana called her after the meeting.
Да ли ју је неко видео на станици?
Did anyone see her at the station?
The sequence is ју је, never је је. In the question, ли comes first in the clitic sequence, while object ју still precedes auxiliary је.
This alternation also preserves an object that learners sometimes accidentally delete:
Тражим Јелену. Да ли ју је директор већ позвао?
I'm looking for Jelena. Has the director already called her?
Without ју, Да ли је директор већ позвао? means simply “Has the director already called?” The feminine object is no longer expressed.
The Negative Perfect with није
Usage after није has competing codified traditions. The current Normative Grammar of Serbian explicitly allows and illustrates ју after negated није: Није ју видео. Many school summaries and a large body of edited usage retain је: Није је видео. Both patterns occur in contemporary standard practice; neither licenses broad ју elsewhere.
Није ју препознала јер је било мрачно.
She didn't recognize her because it was dark. (ју after није, accepted in contemporary normative description)
Није је препознала јер је било мрачно.
She didn't recognize her because it was dark. (је after није, also established in edited usage)
The stable rule for learners is narrower and undisputed: use ју је in an affirmative third-person perfect cluster, and use default је when no auxiliary је or negative није is involved.
Full њу Does Not Alternate
Contrastive and prepositional contexts use full њу, not clitic је/ју.
Њу је директор позвао, а мене није.
The director called her, but not me.
Мислим на њу, али не желим да је узнемиравам.
I'm thinking about her, but I don't want to disturb her.
The first њу bears contrastive stress. In the second example, њу follows на, while later neutral је is an accusative clitic. The full form remains њу even beside auxiliary је.
Order Inside a Larger Cluster
The practical order is ли — auxiliary other than је — dative — accusative/genitive — се — auxiliary је.
Да ли си му је послала јуче?
Did you send it to him yesterday?
The feminine object uses је because the auxiliary is си, not је: ли — си — му — је.
Милица ми ју је послала као прилог уз поруку.
Milica sent it to me as an attachment to the message.
The understood object is feminine, for example фотографију. Dative ми precedes accusative ју, and auxiliary је closes the cluster: ми — ју — је.
Марко нам их је донео пре почетка часа.
Marko brought them to us before the class began.
The same architecture works without the feminine alternation: dative нам, accusative их, auxiliary је.
Reflexive се and Auxiliary је
In the third-person singular perfect of a reflexive verb, Serbian normally omits auxiliary је after се:
Она ми се јавила чим је стигла.
She contacted me as soon as she arrived.
The main-clause cluster is ми се, not ми се је. This omission is specific to third-person singular perfect је beside reflexive се; other auxiliaries remain: Ја сам се јавио, они су се јавили.
A Brief Dialogue
„Јеси ли видео Јелену?“ — „Нисам је видео јутрос, али ју је Ана срела после посла.“ — „Да ли ју је позвала?“ — „Јесте, послала јој је и поруку.“
‘Did you see Jelena?’ — ‘I didn't see her this morning, but Ana met her after work.’ — ‘Did she call her?’ — ‘Yes, and she sent her a message too.’
The first object is default је beside auxiliary сам. The two third-person perfect clauses use ју је. In послала јој је, јој is dative “to her,” while final је is the auxiliary.
Discourse, Omission, and свој
Clitics normally retrieve an established referent; they do not need an extra subject pronoun merely as a host.
Позвала сам је и оставила јој поруку.
I called her and left her a message.
First-person subject ја is omitted because сам identifies it. Accusative је and dative јој refer to the already known woman.
Possessive reference still follows the subject:
Директорка ју је позвала у своју канцеларију.
The director called her into her own office. (the office belongs to the director)
Своју points to subject директорка, not object ју. Њену would normally point to another woman, potentially the woman being called.
Practice Task 1: Choose је, ју, or њу
Срећем је често, али ју је мој брат упознао тек јуче.
I meet her often, but my brother met her only yesterday. Answer: present срећем takes default је; third-person perfect requires ју је.
Са њом радим сваки дан и добро је познајем.
I work with her every day and know her well. Answer: full њом after са; clitic је as a neutral direct object.
Practice Task 2: Build the Cluster
Да ли си јој је вратио пре састанка?
Did you return it to her before the meeting? Answer: ли — си — јој — је; the auxiliary is си, so the feminine object remains је.
Сестра ми ју је оставила на столу.
My sister left it for me on the table. Answer: dative ми — feminine accusative ју — auxiliary је.
Common Mistakes
1. Allowing two adjacent forms је је.
❌ Ана је је позвала после ручка.
Incorrect — feminine accusative changes to ју before auxiliary је.
✅ Ана ју је позвала после ручка.
Ana called her after lunch.
2. Extending ју to an ordinary present-tense clause.
❌ Виђам ју сваког дана у библиотеци.
Incorrect in the neutral contemporary Serbian standard — without auxiliary је, use accusative clitic је.
✅ Виђам је сваког дана у библиотеци.
I see her every day at the library.
3. Omitting the feminine object to avoid the cluster.
❌ Да ли је ико срео испред хотела?
Incorrect for ‘Did anyone meet her?’ — the sentence lacks the object pronoun.
✅ Да ли ју је ико срео испред хотела?
Did anyone meet her outside the hotel?
4. Putting auxiliary је before ју.
❌ Милица је ју срела испред позоришта.
Incorrect — pronoun clitic ју precedes the exceptional auxiliary је.
✅ Милица ју је срела испред позоришта.
Milica met her outside the theater.
5. Retaining је after reflexive се in the perfect.
❌ Она ми се је јавила касно синоћ.
Incorrect — third-person singular auxiliary је is omitted beside reflexive се.
✅ Она ми се јавила касно синоћ.
She contacted me late last night.
Key Takeaways
- The clitic inventory covers genitive, dative, and accusative; full forms serve emphasis and prepositional phrases.
- Feminine accusative is normally је: Видим је, видео сам је.
- Before auxiliary је, it becomes ју: Она ју је видела.
- After није, both је and ју occur in contemporary codified practice; this does not make ју a general default.
- Dative precedes accusative/genitive, and auxiliary је closes the cluster.
- In third-person singular reflexive perfects, је is omitted after се.
