Clitic vs Full Pronoun Forms

Serbian personal objects come in two shapes. Full forms such as мене, теби, њега, њој are stressed and can carry contrast. Clitics such as ме, ти, га, јој are unstressed, cannot stand alone, and normally refer to information already active in the conversation. Choosing between them is therefore not just a case-table exercise: case determines the available forms, while discourse and prosody determine which form fits.

Compare Мене су позвали, не њега “They invited me, not him” with neutral Позвали су ме “They invited me.”

The Full and Clitic Inventory

Clitics exist in the genitive, dative, and accusative. Nominative, instrumental, and locative use full forms. Нас and вас have the same spelling whether stressed or unstressed; their position and pronunciation reveal the function.

PersonGenitive full / cliticDative full / cliticAccusative full / clitic
1 sg.мене / мемени / мимене / ме
2 sg.тебе / тетеби / титебе / те
3 sg. masc./neut.њега / гањему / муњега / га
3 sg. fem.ње / јењој / јојњу / је, ју
1 pl.нас / наснама / намнас / нас
2 pl.вас / васвама / вамвас / вас
3 pl.њих / ихњима / имњих / их

The feminine accusative alternation је/ју depends on the surrounding clitic cluster and is treated fully on Clitic Pronoun Forms and the je/ju Problem.

Neutral Accessible Objects Favor Clitics

When the listener already knows the referent and there is no contrast, a clitic is the neutral choice.

Где је Милан? Видео сам га пре десет минута испред банке.

Where is Milan? I saw him ten minutes ago outside the bank.

Milan has just been mentioned, so га efficiently retrieves him. Full њега would suggest “him rather than someone else.”

Ана има нову адресу; послаћу јој пакет сутра.

Ana has a new address; I'll send her the package tomorrow.

Dative јој is a neutral established recipient. The noun object пакет remains full because it supplies new lexical information.

Genitive clitics occur with verbs and existential constructions that govern genitive:

Петар данас није у канцеларији; нема га до понедељка.

Petar isn't in the office today; he won't be here until Monday.

Га is genitive after existential нема. The same spelling is accusative in видим га; syntax, not spelling alone, identifies the case.

Full Forms Carry Stress and Contrast

Use a full form when the pronoun is explicitly contrasted, corrected, or focused.

Њој сам дао резервни кључ, а њему само број телефона.

I gave her the spare key, but him only the phone number.

Тражили су мене, не тебе.

They were looking for me, not you.

A full pronoun can open the clause because it bears stress. A clitic cannot:

Мени то нико није рекао.

Nobody told me that. (emphasis on me)

This is not freely interchangeable with clause-initial ми. Neutral Нико ми то није рекао places the dative clitic after the first constituent.

💡
If the pronoun can naturally answer “whom specifically?” or participate in “X, not Y,” choose the full form. If it quietly retrieves an established participant, choose the clitic.

Prepositions Require Full Forms

Clitics cannot be complements of prepositions. Use без мене, код тебе, према њему, са њом, о нама, између њих.

О њему смо разговарали са њом после предавања.

We spoke about him with her after the lecture.

Both pronouns are full because they follow prepositions. Even when the referents are completely familiar, о га and са је are impossible.

Coordination likewise favors full forms:

Између мене и тебе више нема неспоразума.

There are no misunderstandings between you and me anymore.

Clitics Occupy the Clause's Second Position

An object clitic attaches prosodically near the beginning of its clause, normally after the first stressed word or first constituent. “Second position” means the second structural slot, not mechanically the second written word.

Мој стари пријатељ ми је послао фотографије са путовања.

My old friend sent me photographs from the trip.

The whole noun phrase мој стари пријатељ fills the first slot; ми је follows it. Splitting that phrase merely to count words would be unnatural.

Јуче смо му их показали у канцеларији.

Yesterday we showed them to him at the office.

The first unit is јуче. Auxiliary смо precedes dative му, which precedes accusative их.

When the lexical verb opens the clause, the cluster follows it:

Показао сам јој га чим је стигла.

I showed it to her as soon as she arrived.

English places it and to her after the verb. Serbian groups auxiliary сам, dative јој, and accusative га directly after the first prosodic unit показао.

Order Inside the Clitic Cluster

The practical order is:

  1. question particle ли;
  2. auxiliary clitics other than је: сам, си, смо, сте, су; бих, би…; ћу, ћеш…;
  3. dative pronoun;
  4. genitive/accusative pronoun;
  5. reflexive се;
  6. auxiliary је at the end of the cluster.

Да ли си му га већ послала?

Have you already sent it to him?

The order is ли — си — му — га. Dative precedes accusative; reversing them is not an English-style option.

Марко ми га је донео лично.

Marko brought it to me personally.

Third-person auxiliary је is exceptional and comes after the pronoun clitics: ми — га — је.

Петар ће нам их донети после ручка.

Petar will bring them to us after lunch.

Future auxiliary ће is not the exceptional је, so it precedes нам их.

Full Forms, Subjects, and Information Structure

Choosing a full object does not require an explicit subject. Neutral Serbian avoids an English-style subject pronoun unless it is contrastive.

Послао сам му га јутрос, али он још није одговорио.

I sent it to him this morning, but he still hasn't replied.

First-person ја is omitted because сам identifies the speaker. Explicit он is useful because the second clause switches to the recipient as subject.

The object choice then adds another information layer:

Њему сам послао уговор, а њој само кратку поруку.

I sent him the contract, but her only a short message.

Full datives create contrast. In a neutral version, use Послао сам му уговор и послао сам јој поруку.

A Brief Dialogue

„Јеси ли Ани дао кључ?“ — „Јесам, дао сам јој га јутрос.“ — „Њој или Маји?“ — „Ани; њој сам дао и картицу.“

‘Did you give Ana the key?’ — ‘Yes, I gave it to her this morning.’ — ‘To her or to Maja?’ — ‘To Ana; I gave her the card too.’

Neutral јој га retrieves Ana and the key. Once the speaker corrects a possible alternative, full њој carries contrast and moves to the front.

Reflexive Possession Remains свој

Object clitics do not change the rule for subject-bound possession.

Ана ми је показала своју нову канцеларију.

Ana showed me her own new office.

Ми is the recipient, but subject Ана is the possessor, so своју refers to Ana. Њену would normally point to some other woman.

Practice Task 1: Hear the Contrast

Choose the neutral clitic or the focused full form.

Позвали су нас на разговор у понедељак.

They invited us to a meeting on Monday. Answer: unstressed нас is neutral and occupies the early clitic position.

Нас су позвали, а њих нису.

They invited us, but not them. Answer: нас and њих are stressed full forms in explicit contrast.

Practice Task 2: Build the Cluster

Put the clitics in standard order.

Да ли ћеш ми га вратити до петка?

Will you return it to me by Friday? Answer: ли — ћеш — ми — га.

Сестра нам их је оставила на рецепцији.

My sister left them for us at reception. Answer: dative нам, accusative их, then exceptional auxiliary је.

Common Mistakes

1. Using a clitic after a preposition.

❌ Разговарали смо о га после састанка.

Incorrect — a preposition requires the full form њему.

✅ Разговарали смо о њему после састанка.

We talked about him after the meeting.

2. Starting a clause with an unstressed form.

❌ Му сам послао адресу јуче.

Incorrect — dative clitic му cannot open the clause.

✅ Послао сам му адресу јуче.

I sent him the address yesterday.

3. Using a full form where neutral discourse requires an unstressed continuation.

❌ Милан је ушао у продавницу. Видео сам њега код касе.

Overemphatic for a neutral continuation — њега implies ‘him, not someone else’; use га.

✅ Милан је ушао у продавницу. Видео сам га код касе.

Milan entered the store. I saw him by the checkout.

4. Reversing dative and accusative clitics.

❌ Да ли си га му дао пре поласка?

Incorrect — dative му must precede accusative га in the cluster.

✅ Да ли си му га дао пре поласка?

Did you give it to him before leaving?

5. Copying English possessive coreference.

❌ Милица му је показала њену канцеларију.

Incorrect for Milica's own office — њену points to another woman.

✅ Милица му је показала своју канцеларију.

Milica showed him her own office.

Key Takeaways

  • Full forms are stressed; clitics are unstressed and discourse-old.
  • Use full forms after prepositions, in coordination, and for contrast or correction.
  • Neutral established objects favor clitics in the clause's second-position cluster.
  • Inside the cluster, auxiliaries other than је precede pronouns; dative precedes accusative/genitive; auxiliary је comes last.
  • Нас and вас may look identical as full forms and clitics; stress and placement distinguish them.
  • Use свој for possession by the clause subject, regardless of nearby object pronouns.
