The Second-Position (Wackernagel) Rule

Serbian clitics normally occupy second position in their clause. That does not mean “the second word on the page.” It means that an unstressed clitic cluster follows the first suitable prosodic and syntactic unit: often one word, often a complete phrase, and sometimes a conjunction or interrogative expression that begins a dependent clause.

The safe baseline: first constituent + cluster

For active use, first identify one complete opening constituent, then place the whole clitic cluster after it.

Марко ми је јутрос вратио књигу.

Marko returned the book to me this morning.

Мој стари пријатељ ми је јутрос вратио књигу.

My old friend returned the book to me this morning.

In the first sentence the initial subject contains one word; in the second it contains three. The cluster ми је follows the subject phrase in both. It is the second structural unit, even though ми is the fourth written word in the second sentence.

A time or object phrase can occupy the first slot when discourse makes it the frame or topic.

Јутрос ми је Марко вратио књигу.

This morning, Marko returned the book to me. (time frame first)

Ову књигу ми је Марко вратио јутрос.

As for this book, Marko returned it to me this morning. (book as topic)

The event is similar, but the opening tells the listener how to organize it. Flexible order therefore changes information structure while second position tracks the chosen opening.

💡
Use a two-step procedure: choose what comes first for discourse reasons; then place the entire clitic cluster immediately after that first suitable unit.

First word and first phrase are both attested

Serbian also permits clitics after the first prosodic word inside some longer initial constituents.

Тај задатак је био необично тежак.

That task was unusually difficult. (clitic after the full subject phrase)

Тај је задатак био необично тежак.

That task was unusually difficult. (clitic after the first word; marked in many contexts)

Both patterns belong to standard Serbian, but they are not freely interchangeable in every phrase or context. With an argument such as тај задатак, the full-phrase placement is generally the safer neutral choice. First-word placement depends more heavily on prosodic grouping and discourse and may sound edited, emphatic, or speaker-dependent.

Predicate-initial material behaves differently. Corpus and experimental research finds first-word placement particularly robust when the opening belongs to the predicate.

Веома је важан тај последњи детаљ.

That final detail is very important. (predicate begins the clause; је follows the first prosodic word)

This is why no rule based only on counting noun-phrase words can predict every placement. The advanced Prosodic Constituency and Second Position page explains the first-word/first-phrase alternation.

What can fill the first slot?

Many kinds of constituents can precede the cluster:

OpeningExample beginningDiscourse effect
subjectАна је …neutral subject topic
time/place phraseПосле ручка смо …sets a frame
objectОвај предлог смо …topical or contrastive object
interrogativeКоме си …?question focus
subordinatorда ми је …; кад се …begins a dependent clause

По завршетку обуке смо се вратили у своје канцеларије.

After the training ended, we returned to our offices.

Коме си послала исправљени уговор?

Who did you send the corrected contract to? (addressing a woman)

The prepositional phrase после ручка is one unit. Interrogative коме supports auxiliary си, unlike English, which moves an auxiliary before the subject.

The whole cluster moves as a block

Once the host position has been chosen, do not scatter clitics around the verb. Their internal order is fixed, but this page treats the cluster as a single block.

Сутра ћу ти га показати после састанка.

Tomorrow I will show it to you after the meeting.

Овај документ ћу ти показати после састанка.

I will show you this document after the meeting. (document as topic)

The cluster ћу ти га remains intact. Changing the opening from сутра to овај документ relocates the entire block; it does not alter its internal sequence. For that sequence, use Clitic Cluster Order.

Third-person auxiliary је has exceptional internal behavior, and reflexive се can trigger its omission in the perfect. These facts affect the contents of the block, not the method for finding second position.

Each clause calculates its own second position

A complex sentence does not have one giant clitic cluster. Every finite clause provides its own domain.

Ана ми је рекла да ће ти се јавити сутра.

Ana told me that she would contact you tomorrow.

Main-clause ми је follows Ана. In the subordinate clause, да begins a new domain and is followed by ће ти се. Moving the embedded clitics next to the main cluster would destroy the clause structure.

Time and conditional subordinators work similarly.

Кад ми се будеш јавио, рећи ћу ти шта смо одлучили.

When you contact me, I will tell you what we decided. (addressing a man)

The temporal clause has ми се after кад and future-II auxiliary будеш later as a full stressed verb form within that construction. The main clause has future clitic ћу ти after рећи, while the embedded interrogative clause has perfect auxiliary смо after шта.

Conjunctions, pauses, and material outside the clause

Some conjunctions naturally introduce a clause and support an immediately following cluster.

Оставила сам јој број, али ми се није јавила до вечери.

I left her my number, but she did not contact me by evening. (female speaker)

Али begins the second coordinated clause, followed by ми се. An expressed subject changes the early unit: али он ми се није јавио is also natural.

A vocative or detached parenthetical pronounced with its own intonation is outside the following clause and does not mechanically host that clause’s clitics.

Марко, јеси ли понео кључеве?

Marko, did you bring the keys?

The vocative Марко is followed by a break. The question begins with full јеси, which hosts ли. Writing Марко, ли си…? would wrongly treat the detached address as an ordinary first constituent.

Long introductory material followed by a clear intonational boundary can likewise form a separate domain. Learners should prefer an unambiguous host in the clause rather than forcing a clitic directly across a pause.

💡
A comma is not itself a clitic rule. Ask whether the preceding material belongs inside the same intonational and syntactic clause or is detached as a vocative, parenthetical, or separate frame.

Verb-first clauses

Serbian can omit an understood subject, so a lexical verb or participle may begin the clause and host the clitic.

Заборавио сам кишобран у аутобусу.

I left my umbrella on the bus. (male speaker)

Вратила ми је документа истог дана.

She returned the documents to me the same day.

English normally requires an overt subject. Serbian agreement identifies it, while the initial participle supplies a host. Starting with bare сам or ми је is impossible in the neutral affirmative clause because the clitics would have no preceding support.

A placement diagnostic

For any sentence with clitics:

  1. bracket each finite clause;
  2. underline the first non-detached constituent in that clause;
  3. keep all its clitics in one ordered block immediately after that unit;
  4. check whether you have chosen advanced first-word placement inside a phrase; if so, confirm that the intended prosody supports it;
  5. reread the sentence for the topic or focus created by the opening.

После кратког разговора, Ивана нам је обећала да ће га сутра позвати.

After a brief conversation, Ivana promised us that she would call him tomorrow.

Analytically, the sentence contains the detached frame [После кратког разговора], main clause [Ивана нам је обећала …], and embedded clause [да ће га сутра позвати]. The main cluster нам је follows subject Ивана, while embedded ће га follows да.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Move the opening

Start from Милица ми је јуче послала адресу. Produce natural versions beginning with јуче and адресу. Keep ми је together, then describe how the time frame and object topic change the message.

Task 2: Mark clause domains

Take three sentences containing да, кад, or али. Put brackets around every clause, circle its first host, and place its clitics independently. Include one vocative and explain why it does not host the following question clitic.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сам јуче добио резултате.

Incorrect — positive auxiliary clitic сам cannot begin a neutral clause.

✅ Јуче сам добио резултате.

I received the results yesterday. (male speaker)

❌ Моја је старија сестра ми донела кључеве.

Incorrect — auxiliary је and dative ми have been split between two competing placement sites instead of forming one coherent cluster.

✅ Моја старија сестра ми је донела кључеве.

My older sister brought me the keys.

❌ Ана ми је рекла ће ти се јавити.

Incorrect — the subordinate clause needs да, which also supplies the host for its clitic cluster.

✅ Ана ми је рекла да ће ти се јавити.

Ana told me that she would contact you.

❌ Марко, ли си понео пасош?

Incorrect — a detached vocative does not host initial question clitic ли.

✅ Марко, јеси ли понео пасош?

Marko, did you bring your passport?

Key Takeaways

  • Second position follows the first suitable prosodic-syntactic unit, not necessarily the first written word.
  • First-phrase placement is the safe productive baseline; first-word placement is real but more conditioned.
  • Choose the initial constituent for topic, focus, or framing, then move the entire clitic block with it.
  • Every finite clause calculates its own host and cluster.
  • Vocatives and detached parentheticals do not automatically count as the first unit of the following clause.
  • Internal cluster order is a separate problem; do not solve placement by scattering clitics.
