Advanced Serbian information structure is not “free word order.” Speakers coordinate constituent order, case, clitics, focus particles, and prosody to signal what the utterance is about and what it adds. A fronted phrase may be integrated into the clause, detached as a topic, or resumed by a pronoun; a phrase at the right edge may be ordinary focus or a separate afterthought. These structures can express the same event while making different assumptions about the listener's attention.
Integrated Fronting Is Not Dislocation
An integrated object can move to the left without a resumptive clitic. Its case still identifies its grammatical role.
Ову верзију смо јуче послали рецензенткињи.
This version is the one we sent to the reviewer yesterday. (fronted integrated object)
Accusative ову верзију occupies an argument position in the clause. It may be a topic or contrastive focus depending on context and intonation. There is no pause after it and no second pronoun representing the same object.
Ову верзију смо послали рецензенткињи, а претходну смо задржали у архиви.
We sent this version to the reviewer, while we kept the previous one in the archive. (parallel contrastive topics)
Case-marked fronting is covered broadly on case and information structure. Dislocation adds a structural and prosodic layer.
Hanging Topics Establish a Frame
A hanging topic stands outside the core clause and names the discourse domain. It need not bear the case required inside the clause; a pronoun or clitic in the clause carries the actual grammatical relation.
Што се тиче нове уреднице, њој ћемо прво послати рукопис.
As for the new editor, we will send the manuscript to her first.
The frame што се тиче + genitive has its own government. Full dative њој expresses the recipient role inside the clause. This is not a disagreement between two cases; the two phrases belong to different structures.
Spontaneous speech also permits looser nominative topics:
Онај нови колега, нико му још није објаснио поступак.
That new colleague—nobody has explained the procedure to him yet. (informal spoken topic)
Nominative онај нови колега introduces the person; dative clitic му resumes him as recipient. The break is essential. Without the pause, the initial nominative would compete to be interpreted as an integrated subject.
Contrastive Left Dislocation Shows Case Connectivity
A more integrated left-dislocation pattern uses a case-marked phrase and a prominent full pronoun in the same case. It is strongly contrastive and often compares two referents.
Марку, њему ћемо послати оригинал, а Петру само копију.
As for Marko, we will send the original to him, but only a copy to Petar. (contrastive left dislocation)
Dative Марку and њему visibly match. Full њему, not enclitic му, carries contrastive prominence. This is not the neutral way to say “We will send Marko the original”; it deliberately reactivates and contrasts Marko.
Тај предлог, њега одбор није ни разматрао, за разлику од осталих.
That proposal—the committee did not even consider it, unlike the others. (contrastive left dislocation)
Accusative тај предлог is formally identical to nominative because the noun is masculine inanimate, but full њега and the predicate establish its object role. Prosody and contrast prevent a neutral subject reading.
Standard Serbian Does Not Routinely Double Integrated Objects
Serbian permits resumptive patterns in dislocation and repair, but it does not require pervasive object clitic doubling of ordinary integrated noun phrases. That distinguishes the standard pattern from systems in which doubling is grammaticalized more broadly.
❌ Марију сам је позвала после састанка.
Incorrect as a neutral integrated object—the full accusative noun and clitic је redundantly fill the same ordinary object position.
✅ Марију сам позвала после састанка.
I called Marija after the meeting. (female speaker; integrated fronted object)
A detached clarification creates another structure:
Позвала сам је после састанка — Марију из правне службе.
I called her after the meeting—Marija from the legal department. (female speaker; right afterthought)
Here је completes the clause, and the following accusative phrase identifies its referent after a prosodic break. Regional or conversational doubling patterns exist, but they must be labeled rather than turned into an unmarked rule for standard Serbian.
Right Dislocation and Afterthoughts
A right-dislocated phrase follows a clause that is already grammatical. It reactivates, clarifies, repairs, or evaluates an accessible referent.
Вратила сам јој сва документа — новој секретарки.
I returned all the documents to her—the new secretary. (female speaker; spoken clarification)
Dative clitic јој corresponds to dative новој секретарки. A nominative afterthought would break that case connection.
Коначно су објављени, резултати другог круга конкурса.
They have finally been published—the results of the second round of the competition. (right-dislocated subject)
There is no overt subject pronoun because Serbian permits a null subject; masculine plural су објављени anticipates резултати. A comma or dash represents the break imperfectly. Actual speech distinguishes a low, backgrounded tail from a more prominent repair.
Ordinary heavy final constituents are different:
Комисија је објавила резултате другог круга конкурса на званичном сајту.
The committee published the results of the second round of the competition on the official website. (integrated object)
There is no resumptive clitic and no detached intonation before резултате.
Right Edge: Focus or Detached Tail?
Clause-final position often hosts new or corrective focus, but finality alone proves nothing.
Коначну одлуку је донео управни одбор, а не министар.
The management board, not the minister, made the final decision. (final corrective subject focus)
Управни одбор belongs inside the clause and bears the main correction. Compare the detached tail:
Он је донео коначну одлуку — управни одбор, а не министар.
It made the final decision—the management board, not the minister. (repair-like right identification)
The second needs a context in which masculine он can initially refer to an institution; many editors would prefer the integrated first version. Dislocation is a discourse resource, not a more emphatic synonym for every final focus.
Focus Particles and Prosody
Particles such as само, баш, управо, чак, тек associate with a nearby focus and evoke alternatives. Moving one may change scope.
Само је правница прочитала цео уговор.
Only the lawyer read the entire contract. (subject focus)
Правница је прочитала само последњи члан уговора.
The lawyer read only the final article of the contract. (object focus)
Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark nuclear stress or pitch accent. In speech, prominence distinguishes a corrected subject, object, time, or polarity; in writing, context and particles must carry more of the burden. Do not add dictionary accent marks to imitate focus.
Clitic Domains after Detached Topics
A detached frame sits outside the clause. It does not automatically serve as the internal host for a cluster that would otherwise begin the clause.
Што се тиче буџета, управа га је одобрила без додатне расправе.
As for the budget, management approved it without further discussion.
Inside the core clause, subject управа precedes cluster га је. The following version strands enclitics after the boundary:
❌ Што се тиче рока, га је управа продужила до краја месеца.
Incorrect—the detached frame does not license ga je at the left edge of the core clause.
✅ Што се тиче рока, управа га је продужила до краја месеца.
As for the deadline, management extended it until the end of the month.
By contrast, an integrated fronted object can host the cluster: Тај рок га је управа... would contain suspicious neutral doubling, but Тај рок је управа продужила... is a well-formed integrated object-first clause.
A Formal Passage with Controlled Packaging
Што се тиче прве препоруке, одбор ју је прихватио без измена. Другу препоруку је одбор вратио ауторима, а трећу је одбацила правна служба. Посебно образложење доставила је управо правна служба, а не секретаријат. Накнадно су стигла и два прилога — табела трошкова и ревидирани календар.
As for the first recommendation, the board accepted it without amendments. The board returned the second recommendation to the authors, while the legal department rejected the third. It was specifically the legal department, not the secretariat, that supplied a separate explanation. Two attachments also arrived later—the cost table and the revised calendar. (formal)
The first sentence uses a detached frame plus clitic resumption; the second uses integrated contrastive objects without doubling; the third places corrective subject focus after the verb; the last adds a right-edge identification. Each order performs a different discourse task.
Practice
Task 1: Package One Object Three Ways
Express “I sent the contract to Ana” with: an integrated fronted object, a hanging што се тиче frame plus resumption, and a right afterthought identifying the contract. Mark the case of every resumed phrase.
Task 2: Diagnose the Right Edge
Create one sentence with final subject focus answering “who?” and another with a complete clause plus a right-dislocated subject. Explain the prosodic break and why the second needs an accessible referent or repair context.
Common Mistakes
❌ Нову директорку смо је упознали јуче.
Incorrect as neutral fronting—an integrated accusative object does not require clitic doubling.
✅ Нову директорку смо упознали јуче.
We met the new director yesterday.
❌ Послала сам му позив — новог сарадника.
Incorrect case connection—dative му requires a dative afterthought, not accusative новог сарадника.
✅ Послала сам му позив — новом сараднику.
I sent him an invitation—the new associate. (female speaker)
❌ Фраза на крају реченице увек је фокус.
Incorrect rule—a final phrase may be integrated focus, heavy material, or a detached afterthought.
✅ Извештај је јуче завршила Јелена, а не Милена.
Jelena, not Milena, finished the report yesterday. (final subject focus)
❌ О старом пројекту, смо јуче разговарали два сата.
Incorrect—the comma strands auxiliary clitic смо after a false detachment.
✅ О старом пројекту смо јуче разговарали два сата.
We discussed the old project for two hours yesterday. (integrated fronted complement)
Key Takeaways
- Integrated fronting, hanging topics, contrastive left dislocation, final focus, and right dislocation are distinct structures.
- Standard Serbian uses resumption in dislocation but does not routinely double every integrated object.
- Hanging frames may have their own case; resumptive material inside the clause follows the predicate's government.
- Right-dislocated phrases follow a complete clause and normally preserve the resumed grammatical role.
- Prosody distinguishes integration from detachment, while clitic order remains constrained inside the core clause.
