Topic, Focus, and Information Structure

Topic is what a clause is organized around; focus is the informative choice among relevant alternatives. Topic often contains given material and focus often contains new material, but these pairs are not identical: a given expression can be contrastive focus, and a newly introduced referent can become a topic. Serbian coordinates word order, clitics, particles, and prosody to express these distinctions.

Three different questions

Use separate diagnostics rather than one vague idea of “emphasis.”

CategoryDiagnosticTypical Serbian tendency
given/newHas the referent or proposition already been activated?given earlier; new later
topic/commentWhat is this clause about?topic often first
background/focusWhat answers the current question or rejects an alternative?focus often late or explicitly marked

These are tendencies, not rigid positions. Serbian can place contrastive focus first with баш, управо, само, and spoken pitch prominence can focus material that is not final.

Broad focus: the whole event is news

When someone asks Шта се догодило? “What happened?”, an ordinary SVO or presentational order can put the whole event in focus.

Ана је купила нови рачунар.

Ana bought a new computer. (all-new event report)

Испред зграде се зауставио црни комби.

A black van stopped outside the building. (presentational, postverbal subject)

The second sentence does not begin with the subject because the van is being introduced, not retrieved as a topic. Initial location provides the scene, while the postverbal nominative supplies the new participant.

English speakers often assume every declarative clause requires a preverbal subject. Serbian agreement and case allow the presentational order without changing црни комби into an object.

Predicate focus: a known topic, new comment

If Ana is already under discussion, the subject is the topic and the predicate tells us something new about her.

Шта је Ана урадила? — Ана је купила нови рачунар.

What did Ana do? — Ana bought a new computer. (Ana topic; predicate focus)

The repeated Ана is possible for clarity, though Serbian can omit it:

Шта је Ана урадила? — Купила је нови рачунар.

What did Ana do? — She bought a new computer. (understood topic; predicate focus)

The verb-first answer hosts auxiliary је after participle купила. Subject omission and clitic placement work together: no empty subject pronoun is inserted merely to imitate English.

Narrow focus: answering one missing value

The question identifies the background and leaves one constituent to fill.

Шта је Марко резервисао? — Марко је резервисао сто поред прозора.

What did Marko reserve? — Marko reserved a table by the window. (object focus)

Ко је резервисао сто поред прозора? — Сто поред прозора је резервисао Марко.

Who reserved a table by the window? — Marko did. (subject focus)

In the second answer, object сто поред прозора is given by the question and appears first; final Марко supplies the requested identity. Masculine резервисао agrees with Марко, not accusative сто.

💡
Use a question–answer test. The phrase that directly replaces the question word is the focus; the rest is background, whether or not it appears first.

Given before new is useful, not absolute

Consider a report about a contract already mentioned.

Тај уговор ми је Јелена послала јуче.

As for that contract, Jelena sent it to me yesterday. (contract topic; event as comment)

Ко ти је послао тај уговор? — Тај уговор ми је послала Јелена.

Who sent you that contract? — Jelena sent it to me. (Jelena in narrow focus)

The cluster ми је follows the fronted topic. Yet a speaker can front new contrastive focus:

Баш Јелена ми је послала уговор, а не њен помоћник.

It was Jelena herself who sent me the contract, not her assistant.

Баш and а не create an explicit alternative set. Front position no longer signals ordinary givenness; it carries corrective focus. Therefore “first = old, last = new” is a helpful starting tendency, not a complete grammar.

Contrastive topic

A contrastive topic selects one member of a set for a comment while implying that another member may receive a different comment.

Уговор смо већ потписали, а анекс ћемо размотрити сутра.

We have already signed the contract, while we will consider the annex tomorrow. (parallel contrastive topics)

Што се тиче цене, њу можемо да променимо; рок не можемо.

As for the price, we can change it; the deadline we cannot.

In the first sentence, уговор and анекс form an explicit pair. In the second, detached што се тиче цене introduces a topic, and full њу resumes it contrastively. Topic is not simply “whatever comes first”: it establishes the question under discussion for the following comment.

Focus particles and scope

Particles help identify exactly what alternatives are excluded or added. Their position determines scope.

Само је Милица прочитала цео извештај.

Only Milica read the entire report. (only the person is restricted)

Милица је прочитала само закључак.

Milica read only the conclusion. (only the object is restricted)

Милица је извештај прочитала тек јутрос.

Milica did not read the report until this morning. (time is the delayed focus)

In the first example, само precedes the focused subject and auxiliary је follows the first prosodic unit. In the second, it directly scopes over закључак. Moving a particle without reconsidering scope changes the proposition.

Prosody is not written into ordinary spelling

The same order can support different readings when spoken prominence changes.

Марко је послао извештај директорки.

Marko sent the report to the director. (focus depends on context and intonation)

In answer to Ко је послао извештај?, Марко is focused. In answer to Коме га је послао?, директорки is focused. Ordinary Serbian does not mark pitch accent or focal stress with accent signs or capitalization. Written context and particles must make the intended reading recoverable.

For audible patterns, see Statement and Focus Intonation.

Topic, focus, and the clitic host

Moving an integrated topic or focus to the left changes what precedes the cluster, but not the order inside that cluster.

Јелена ми га је показала после састанка.

Jelena showed it to me after the meeting. (subject topic)

После састанка ми га је показала Јелена.

It was Jelena who showed it to me after the meeting. (time frame first; late subject focus)

Баш мени га је Јелена показала, а не колеги.

Jelena showed it specifically to me, not to my colleague. (fronted contrastive recipient)

The cluster ми га је or га је remains internally ordered. In the final sentence, full focused мени stands outside the clitic cluster; neutral dative ми would not be doubled. The cluster contains only accusative га and auxiliary је.

💡
First decide whether the opening is an integrated topic, a contrastive focus, or a detached frame. Then calculate second position; do not let the clitic rule decide the discourse structure for you.

A short discourse

Састанак смо већ заказали. Позивнице ће гостима послати Ана, а техничке детаље ће проверити Марко. Само коначни распоред још нисмо добили.

We have already scheduled the meeting. Ana will send the invitations to the guests, while Marko will check the technical details. Only the final schedule is something we still have not received.

Састанак is a topic connected to the preceding planning context. The second sentence has parallel task topics, with Ана and Марко as the people assigned. Само коначни распоред narrows the remaining missing item. Positive auxiliary clitics смо and ће follow the selected first units. Negative нисмо, however, is a fused finite form rather than a positive second-position clitic; it follows још here because of the chosen information structure, not because it belongs to that clitic series.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Answer four questions

Use the proposition Ивана је послала фотографије уреднику to answer “What happened?”, “What did Ivana send?”, “Who sent the photographs?”, and “Who received them?” Choose an order that makes each answer focus natural and label its background.

Task 2: Change particle scope

Write three sentences with само restricting the subject, object, and time expression in turn. Paraphrase what each excludes, then check that every clitic still has an appropriate early host.

Common Mistakes

❌ Свака прва реч је тема, а свака последња реч је фокус.

Incorrect analysis — topic and focus depend on context, alternatives, and prosody, not position alone.

✅ Уговор је тема у питању „Шта је са уговором?“, без обзира на број речи.

The contract is the topic in the question ‘What about the contract?’, regardless of word count.

❌ Нови рачунар је купила Ана значи да је рачунар субјекат.

Incorrect — нови рачунар is accusative; final nominative Ана is the subject and focus.

✅ Нови рачунар је купила Ана, а не Милица.

Ana, not Milica, bought the new computer.

❌ Баш ми је Јелена послала уговор, не колеги.

Incorrect for contrastive ‘to me’ — clitic ми cannot bear the required independent contrast; use full мени.

✅ Баш мени је Јелена послала уговор, не колеги.

Jelena sent the contract specifically to me, not to my colleague.

❌ Само Милица је прочитала закључак значи да је прочитан само закључак.

Incorrect scope — само directly restricts Милица, not закључак.

✅ Јелена је прегледала само закључак извештаја.

Jelena reviewed only the report's conclusion.

Key Takeaways

  • Topic/comment, given/new, and background/focus are related but distinct dimensions.
  • SVO is neutral for many all-new reports; postverbal subjects naturally introduce or focus participants.
  • Given material often comes early and new focus late, but explicit contrastive focus can be fronted.
  • Question–answer pairs reveal focus more reliably than position alone.
  • Focus particles take scope over nearby material; moving them changes meaning.
  • Reordering also changes the clitic host, while internal cluster order remains fixed.
