In Serbian, case belongs to the whole noun phrase. A demonstrative, possessive, adjective, ordinal number, and participle all track the noun's case, gender, and number: са овом мојом новом колегиницом, not a string in which only the final noun changes.
This repeated marking is useful. Even when the noun ending is ambiguous, a modifier may reveal the grammatical form, and agreement keeps participant roles clear when word order changes.
The Four Features to Match
An agreeing word must reflect:
- case — the phrase's role or governor;
- gender — masculine, feminine, or neuter;
- number — singular or plural;
- animacy — relevant especially to masculine singular accusative.
The following table carries three full phrases through common cases.
| Case | Masculine animate | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | овај нови лекар | ова нова адреса | ово мало место |
| G | овог новог лекара | ове нове адресе | овог малог места |
| D | овом новом лекару | овој новој адреси | овом малом месту |
| A | овог новог лекара | ову нову адресу | ово мало место |
| I | овим новим лекаром | овом новом адресом | овим малим местом |
| L | о овом новом лекару | о овој новој адреси | о овом малом месту |
Послали смо овом новом лекару резултате јутрос.
We sent the results to this new doctor this morning.
Записала сам ову нову адресу у телефон.
I saved this new address in my phone.
Разговарали смо о овом малом месту поред језера.
We talked about this small place by the lake.
Determiners and Adjectives Agree Together
Demonstratives (овај, тај, онај), possessives (мој, твој, наш), and descriptive adjectives all belong to the same phrase and receive compatible forms.
Без оне наше старе мапе не бисмо пронашли планинарски дом.
Without that old map of ours, we would not have found the mountain lodge.
The genitive governed by без appears throughout оне + наше + старе + мапе. Leaving any one word in nominative breaks the phrase.
Пришли смо оној нашој старој кући са задње стране.
We approached that old house of ours from the back.
The same lexical phrase is now dative after прићи: оној нашој старој кући. The relationship changes, so every agreeing form changes with it.
Agreement Can Reveal an Otherwise Hidden Case
Feminine i-stem ноћ has the same noun form in nominative and accusative singular. The modifier makes the distinction visible.
Ова необично тиха ноћ свима је пријала.
This unusually quiet night suited everyone.
Дуго ћемо памтити ову необично тиху ноћ.
We will remember this unusually quiet night for a long time.
Nominative ова тиха contrasts with accusative ову тиху, although ноћ itself does not change. Agreement is therefore evidence, not redundancy.
Sometimes the whole phrase is syncretic. Feminine plural ове старе куће can be nominative or accusative, so the verb and clause role must decide:
Ове уске улице воде до старог трга.
These narrow streets lead to the old square.
Град обнавља ове уске улице током лета.
The city is renovating these narrow streets during the summer.
Masculine Animacy Spreads Across the Phrase
Masculine animate singular accusative matches genitive; masculine inanimate accusative matches nominative. Demonstratives and adjectives follow the same split.
Чекамо оног искусног мајстора испред радионице.
We're waiting for that experienced tradesman outside the workshop.
Чекамо онај последњи аутобус испред станице.
We're waiting for that last bus outside the station.
Both phrases are accusative objects of чекати. Animacy gives оног искусног мајстора, while inanimate аутобус gives онај последњи аутобус. It is wrong to apply only the noun alternation and leave онај искусни unchanged.
Ordinals and Adjectival Numbers
Ordinal numbers decline like adjectives and agree with the noun phrase: први дан, првог дана, првом дану. Један also agrees for gender and case when it functions as the cardinal “one.”
На првом радном састанку упознала сам једну нову колегиницу.
At the first work meeting, I met one new colleague.
Locative првом радном састанку and feminine accusative једну нову колегиницу form two separate agreement domains.
Разговарали смо с једним искусним преводиоцем о другом издању књиге.
We spoke with one experienced translator about the second edition of the book.
Instrumental једним искусним преводиоцем contrasts with locative о другом издању.
Cardinal Numbers Create Special Agreement Patterns
The ordinary agreement rule changes inside cardinal phrases. Један uses singular agreement; два/две, три, четири select the paucal/count pattern; пет+ and quantity words select genitive plural.
| Number | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | један нови студент | једна нова порука | једно ново питање |
| 2–4 | два нова студента | две нове поруке | два нова питања |
| 5+ | пет нових студената | пет нових порука | пет нових питања |
Две нове колегинице су стигле, а пет нових студената је већ чекало.
Two new colleagues arrived, and five new students were already waiting.
Feminine две колегинице takes plural feminine стигле. A phrase with пет+ commonly takes neuter singular predicate agreement in the neutral edited pattern: пет студената је чекало. These are grammatical agreement systems, not failures to match the nearest word. See Numeral Government.
Predicate Agreement Is Related but Separate
An adjective inside a noun phrase agrees with its noun in case, gender, and number. A predicate adjective or past participle agrees with the subject in gender and number; nominative is the ordinary predicative form.
Нова врата су коначно постављена.
The new door has finally been installed.
Врата is neuter plural, so both attributive нова and predicate participle постављена are neuter plural. English singular “door” does not control Serbian agreement.
Нова библиотека је отворена, али су читаонице још затворене.
The new library is open, but the reading rooms are still closed.
Feminine singular библиотека — отворена contrasts with feminine plural читаонице — затворене.
Practice Task 1: Carry Agreement Across the Phrase
Change ова занимљива књига to the form required by the governor.
Без ове занимљиве књиге не бих разумео расправу.
Without this interesting book, I would not understand the discussion. Answer: genitive after без across all three words.
Причамо о овој занимљивој књизи после часа.
We're talking about this interesting book after class. Answer: locative after о across all three words.
Practice Task 2: Diagnose the Number Pattern
Explain the modifier and predicate forms.
Три важна документа су стигла јутрос.
Three important documents arrived this morning. Answer: neuter two-to-four pattern важна документа with neuter plural стигла.
Седам важних докумената је стигло јутрос.
Seven important documents arrived this morning. Answer: genitive plural after seven and neutral singular quantified predicate је стигло.
Common Mistakes
1. Declining only the noun.
❌ Разговарам са ова љубазна колегиницом.
Incorrect — demonstrative and adjective must both be instrumental.
✅ Разговарам са овом љубазном колегиницом.
I'm talking with this kind colleague.
2. Ignoring masculine animacy.
❌ Позвали смо онај нови лекар у салу.
Incorrect — animate masculine accusative requires оног новог лекара.
✅ Позвали смо оног новог лекара у салу.
We called that new doctor into the hall.
3. Using ordinary plural agreement after two to four.
❌ На моју адресу су стигли три нови рачуни.
Incorrect — use the masculine count phrase три нова рачуна and neuter plural стигла.
✅ На моју адресу су стигла три нова рачуна.
Three new bills arrived at my address.
4. Following the English noun's gender or number.
❌ Нова врата је отворена целог дана.
Incorrect — врата is neuter plural and requires су отворена.
✅ Нова врата су отворена целог дана.
The new door is open all day.
Key Takeaways
- Every agreeing word inside a noun phrase tracks case, gender, and number; masculine accusative also tracks animacy.
- Agreement often reveals a case that the bare noun hides.
- Ordinals and један decline adjectivally, while cardinal phrases from two upward have special patterns.
- Predicate agreement follows the Serbian subject's grammatical gender and number, not its English translation.
- Build and rehearse complete phrases rather than changing the noun in isolation.
