Prepositions Govern Case

A Serbian preposition does not stand alone: it selects, or governs, a case. Learn без + genitive, према + dative, кроз + accusative, с/са + instrumental, and о + locative as complete units.

Some prepositions govern two cases because the cases express different spatial relationships. The same English preposition may therefore correspond to several Serbian combinations, and the same Serbian preposition may change case and meaning.

The Main Government Map

This table gives the most frequent neutral patterns. Individual prepositions have additional meanings, but their case frame remains part of the construction.

После кратког састанка прошли смо кроз стари пролаз са новом колегиницом.

After the short meeting, we went through the old passage with the new colleague.

The sentence contains genitive after после, accusative after кроз, and instrumental after accompaniment са. Each preposition governs its own complete phrase.

💡
Write vocabulary entries as frames: због + G, према + D, кроз + A, с/са + I, о + L. A translation without the case is incomplete.

Genitive Prepositions: Source and Reference Point

The largest group takes genitive. Source prepositions distinguish perspectives: из means out of an interior, са off a surface or away from a на-place, and од away from a point/person or from a sender.

Вратила се из канцеларије, узела фасциклу са стола и позвала колегу од кога је добила поруку.

She returned from the office, took the folder off the desk, and called the colleague from whom she had received the message.

Other genitive prepositions locate something relative to a reference point: испред школе, иза куће, поред реке, између зграда. Time and cause add пре ручка, после посла, због кише.

Због јаке кише сачекали смо испред главног улаза до седам сати.

Because of the heavy rain, we waited in front of the main entrance until seven o'clock.

English offers “from,” “of,” “because of,” and many other shapes. The Serbian preposition unifies the dependent phrase grammatically; the genitive-preposition page organizes their meanings.

Dative, Accusative, Instrumental, and Locative Frames

Према marks orientation or relation and takes dative; упркос also takes dative, not genitive.

Окренули смо се према отвореном прозору упркос хладном ваздуху.

We turned toward the open window despite the cold air.

Accusative follows кроз “through,” низ “down/along,” and уз “up/along/beside” in their path meanings.

Прошли смо кроз шуму, па наставили уз реку до старог моста.

We went through the forest, then continued along the river to the old bridge.

Accompaniment с/са takes instrumental, while о takes locative for a topic.

Са искусним водичем разговарали смо о безбеднијој стази.

With the experienced guide, we discussed a safer trail.

The forms водичем and стази are not translations of English “with” and “about” by themselves; they are the results of the Serbian frames са + I and о + L.

По normally takes locative for movement over an area, distribution, or sequence, but the goal construction ићи/отићи по нешто “go to fetch something” takes accusative.

После посла идем по лекове, а затим шетам по оближњем парку.

After work I'm going to pick up medicine, and then I'm walking around the nearby park.

Accusative по лекове expresses the purpose of fetching; locative по оближњем парку presents the area through which the walking occurs.

У and На: Destination versus Location

With у and на, accusative normally presents a destination or endpoint; locative presents a stationary setting. The important question is not whether the verb involves movement, but whether the prepositional phrase is the goal.

После доручка идемо у нову библиотеку.

After breakfast, we're going to the new library.

После доручка учимо у новој библиотеци.

After breakfast, we're studying in the new library.

Accusative у нову библиотеку marks entry as a goal. Locative у новој библиотеци marks the setting.

Трчимо у великом парку, а затим трчимо у оближњу шуму.

We run in the large park and then run into the nearby forest.

Both verbs express motion, but only у оближњу шуму is a destination. The slogan “motion takes accusative” is therefore false.

Под, Над, Пред, За, and Међу: Accusative versus Instrumental

These prepositions contrast entering or creating a spatial configuration with already being in it. Accusative marks the endpoint; instrumental marks position.

PrepositionAccusative: endpointInstrumental: position
подставити кутију под стокутија је под столом
надподићи руке над главулампа виси над столом
предизаћи пред зградучекати пред зградом
засести за стоседети за столом
међуући међу људестајати међу људима

Стави торбу под слободну столицу; испод стола нема места.

Put the bag under the empty chair; there is no room under the table.

Торба је сада под слободном столицом.

The bag is now under the empty chair.

Accusative под столицу describes placement into the relation; instrumental под столицом describes the resulting position. Genitive испод стола uses a different, fixed preposition for relative location.

💡
For two-case spatial prepositions, ask “endpoint or existing position?” This is more accurate than “movement or no movement.”

One Form с/са, Two Case Frames

С/са + instrumental means accompaniment or association; са + genitive means source from a surface or a place associated with на.

Вратио сам се са старог стадиона са двојицом пријатеља.

I returned from the old stadium with two friends.

The first са старог стадиона is genitive source. The second са двојицом пријатеља is instrumental accompaniment. Meaning and endings identify two separate constructions.

The longer form са appears for ease of pronunciation, especially before с, ш, з, ж and difficult clusters. Choosing с or са does not itself choose the case.

Phrase-Wide Agreement and Pronouns

The governed case spreads through every modifier:

Без ове старе карте не можемо да стигнемо до планинарског дома.

Without this old map, we cannot reach the mountain lodge.

Genitive appears on ове старе карте and планинарског дома. Personal pronouns also use case forms: без мене, према њему, кроз њу, са нама, о њима. After most prepositions, full pronouns—not clitics—are required.

Без њега нећемо почети, али ћемо касније разговарати с њим.

We won't start without him, but we'll talk with him later.

Genitive њега follows без; instrumental њим follows с.

Practice Task 1: Choose Case from Meaning

Complete the location–destination contrasts.

Аутомобил је паркиран пред новом зградом.

The car is parked in front of the new building. Answer: existing position → instrumental.

Возач је довезао аутомобил пред нову зграду.

The driver brought the car in front of the new building. Answer: endpoint → accusative.

Practice Task 2: Track Three Governors

Identify every prepositional case.

После посла идемо са новим колегама у мали ресторан поред реке.

After work, we're going with the new colleagues to a small restaurant by the river. Answer: после + G, са + I, у + A destination, поред + G.

У малом ресторану причамо о новом пројекту до поноћи.

In the small restaurant, we're talking about the new project until midnight. Answer: у + L location, о + L topic, до + G.

Common Mistakes

1. Choosing from the English preposition.

❌ Гости су управо изашли од музеја на главни трг.

Incorrect — movement out of a museum requires из + genitive, not од copied from English ‘from.’

✅ Гости су управо изашли из музеја на главни трг.

The visitors have just come out of the museum onto the main square.

2. Using locative for a destination.

❌ После паузе улазимо у великој сали.

Incorrect — the hall is the endpoint, so у requires accusative у велику салу.

✅ После паузе улазимо у велику салу.

After the break, we're entering the large hall.

3. Using accusative merely because the verb describes movement.

❌ Деца трче по цео парк већ сат времена.

Incorrect — по in this distributive/area meaning governs locative.

✅ Деца трче по целом парку већ сат времена.

The children have been running around the whole park for an hour.

4. Declining only the noun.

❌ Седимо поред ова велика прозора.

Incorrect — поред requires genitive across the phrase: овог великог прозора.

✅ Седимо поред овог великог прозора.

We're sitting beside this large window.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn every preposition with its governed case and meaning.
  • Fixed frames include без + G, према + D, кроз + A, с/са + I, о + L.
  • У/на contrast accusative destination with locative setting; под/над/пред/за/међу contrast accusative endpoint with instrumental position.
  • Са + genitive marks source, while с/са + instrumental marks accompaniment.
  • English prepositions do not map one-to-one to Serbian case frames, and every modifier must agree inside the governed phrase.
