Prepositions and Their Cases

A Serbian preposition and its case form one construction. Без is not merely “without”: it is без + genitive. Према is према + dative, кроз is кроз + accusative, and topic о is о + locative. Some prepositions select two cases because the case changes the relationship, so translating English in, on, at, to, for, or with one word at a time cannot produce reliable Serbian.

The working government map

The table gives the most productive modern patterns. It is a map, not a claim that every meaning of a preposition fits in one English gloss.

Governed caseFrequent prepositionsCore frame
genitiveбез, близу, до, из, код, од, око, поред, после, пре, против, због; source саseparation, source, reference point, time, cause
dativeк/ка, према, упркос, насупротorientation, relation, concession/opposition
accusativeкроз, низ, уз; many uses of за; fetch-goal поpath, goal, purpose, affected domain
instrumentalс/са for accompanimentcompanion or association
locativeо, по, при; location у and наtopic, distributed area, circumstances, setting

После посла разговарамо с новим колегама о плану за следећу недељу.

After work, we're talking with the new colleagues about the plan for next week.

That sentence contains four separate frames: после + genitive, с + instrumental, о + locative, and purpose/reference за + accusative. The case belongs to each complete phrase, not to the sentence as a whole.

💡
Store prepositions as dictionary frames: без + G, према + D, кроз + A, с/са + I, о + L. A gloss without the governed case is only half an entry.

Case spreads across the whole phrase

The preposition governs the head noun, and adjectives, demonstratives, and numerals take compatible forms throughout the phrase.

Base phraseGoverned phrase
овај нови уговорбез овог новог уговора
ова мала салау овој малој сали
тај стари мостпрема том старом мосту
моја добра пријатељицас мојом добром пријатељицом

Без овог новог уговора не можемо да почнемо радове.

Without this new contract, we cannot begin the work.

Окрените се према оном високом торњу и наставите право.

Turn toward that tall tower and continue straight.

Plural endings may look identical in dative, instrumental, and locative, and some singular nouns are syncretic too. The governor and meaning identify the case: према новим зградама is dative, с новим зградама would be instrumental, and у новим зградама is locative.

One preposition, two case-driven construals

Two-case prepositions do not switch case randomly. The case tells the listener whether a relationship is being created or already holds.

PrepositionGoal/changeExisting setting
уaccusative: у канцеларијуlocative: у канцеларији
наaccusative: на терасуlocative: на тераси
подaccusative: под стоinstrumental: под столом
надaccusative: над главуinstrumental: над главом
предaccusative: пред зградуinstrumental: пред зградом
заaccusative: за стоinstrumental: за столом
међуaccusative: међу људеinstrumental: међу људима

Унели смо столице у велику салу, а сада су све столице у великој сали.

We carried the chairs into the large hall, and now all the chairs are in the large hall.

Мачка је скочила под клупу и остала под клупом док киша није стала.

The cat jumped under the bench and stayed under the bench until the rain stopped.

The usual shortcut “motion takes accusative” fails. Someone can run у парку for an hour: there is motion, but the park is the setting. Accusative у парк makes the park the endpoint. The detailed two-case guide covers the full spatial system.

💡
For a two-case preposition, ask whether the noun phrase names a new endpoint/configuration or an existing setting/configuration. Do not ask only whether the verb involves movement.

The same form с/са, two constructions

С/са + instrumental expresses accompaniment or association. Са + genitive expresses departure from a surface or from a place conventionally framed with на.

Са конференције сам се вратила с колегиницом из Чачка.

I returned from the conference with a colleague from Čačak. (female speaker)

In са конференције, feminine genitive marks the source. In с колегиницом, feminine instrumental marks the companion. The vowel in са does not choose the case; pronunciation, meaning, and the noun form work together. See s/sa: with, off, from.

English prepositions split several ways

English from maps to at least three frequent Serbian source frames:

Serbian pairingSource
у школу → из школеout of an interior/institution
на посао → с послаaway from a на-place/activity
код лекара → од лекараaway from a person/professional

Из школе идем право на тренинг, а после тренинга свраћам код баке.

From school I'm going straight to practice, and after practice I'm stopping by my grandmother's.

English at may be у школи, на послу, код баке, or another construction. English with may be accompaniment с пријатељем, bare instrumental means ножем, or a phrase chosen by a particular verb. Learn the Serbian relation, not an isolated translation.

Кутију је отворио ножем, а затим ју је с пријатељем однео у магацин.

He opened the box with a knife and then carried it to the storeroom with a friend.

The sentence shows bare instrumental means ножем versus companion с пријатељем in two natural actions.

Spatial meanings extend into time and abstraction

Prepositional meanings develop from spatial prototypes but are not limited to space. Genitive после ручка and пре састанка locate events in time. О + locative marks a topic. Због + genitive marks cause, and упркос + dative marks concession.

Пре седнице смо разговарали о буџету упркос великој буци у ходнику.

Before the session, we discussed the budget despite the loud noise in the corridor.

Због квара смо до града стигли тек после поноћи.

Because of a breakdown, we didn't reach the city until after midnight.

Abstract extensions do not license creative case switching. Modern fixed government must still be learned.

Fixed expressions and lexical selection

A preposition can be selected by a noun, adjective, or verb rather than by physical geometry. Frequent frames include интересовање за + accusative, разговор о + locative, заинтересован за + accusative, у вези са + instrumental, and љут на + accusative.

У вези са новим распоредом разговарајте с руководитељком смене.

Regarding the new schedule, speak with the shift supervisor. (formal)

Do not replace са in у вези са merely because English uses about. Conversely, Serbian says разговарати о нечему, not у вези са in every ordinary conversation. A fixed frame includes its register and typical context.

Pronouns after prepositions

Prepositions normally require full pronoun forms: без мене, код тебе, према њему, кроз њу, са нама, о њима. Unstressed object clitics cannot stand immediately after a preposition.

Без ње нећемо почети, а после састанка ћемо разговарати с њом.

We won't start without her, and after the meeting we'll talk with her.

Genitive ње follows без; instrumental њом follows с. Both are full forms even though English simply repeats her.

A practical diagnostic

When producing a phrase, work in this order:

  1. Identify the Serbian relation: source, endpoint, setting, path, companion, topic, cause, or fixed complement.
  2. Choose the Serbian preposition or bare-case frame.
  3. Retrieve its governed case for that meaning.
  4. Inflect the entire phrase, not only the noun.

Кроз стари парк идемо према новом мосту са искусним водичем.

We're going through the old park toward the new bridge with an experienced guide.

The path is кроз + accusative, orientation is према + dative, and companion is са + instrumental.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Name the relation first

Build Serbian phrases for into the office, in the office, from the office, toward the office, and with the manager. Identify the relation before selecting the preposition and case.

Task 2: Track every governor

In a sentence meaning After lunch we walked through the park with Ana and talked about the trip, label the genitive, accusative, instrumental, and locative phrases, then produce the Serbian sentence.

Common Mistakes

❌ Без ова важна документа не могу да предам пријаву.

Incorrect — без governs genitive across the whole phrase: овог важног документа.

✅ Без овог важног документа не могу да предам пријаву.

Without this important document, I cannot submit the application.

❌ Деца већ сат времена возе ролере у градски парк.

Incorrect for rollerblading within the park — accusative у градски парк presents the park as a destination.

✅ Деца већ сат времена возе ролере у градском парку.

The children have been rollerblading in the city park for an hour.

❌ После посла идем од лекара.

Incorrect for the intended destination ‘to the doctor’ — use код + genitive; од marks source away from the doctor.

✅ После посла идем код лекара.

After work, I'm going to the doctor.

❌ Пишем адресу са оловком.

Incorrect for the writing instrument — means takes bare instrumental, without с/са.

✅ Пишем адресу оловком.

I'm writing the address with a pencil.

❌ Причали смо о њу после вечере.

Incorrect — topic о governs locative, and a preposition requires the full form њој.

✅ Причали смо о њој после вечере.

We talked about her after dinner.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn a preposition together with its governed case and a model phrase.
  • Case marks relations such as endpoint, setting, path, source, companion, and topic; it is not chosen by the English preposition.
  • Two-case prepositions distinguish a newly created configuration from an existing one.
  • Government applies to the whole noun phrase, and pronouns after prepositions use full forms.
  • Build from Serbian meaning outward: relation → preposition → case → phrase-wide agreement.
