Hedges let a speaker avoid claiming more precision or certainty than the evidence supports. Serbian distinguishes an open possibility (можда), a probability (вероватно), a subjective inference or expectation (ваљда), difficulty formulating an impression (некако), and numerical approximation (отприлике, око). These words can also protect a social relationship, but uncertainty and politeness are not the same thing.
The broader inventory of proposition-level stance appears under sentence adverbs. This page concentrates on choosing among the most easily confused hedges and on the implicatures they create.
Four different reasons to be less exact
Do not treat every English maybe, sort of, or about as one category.
| Function | Serbian resources | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| epistemic uncertainty | можда, вероватно, ваљда | whether the claim is true |
| evaluation softening | некако, помало, није баш, донекле | strength or formulation of a judgment |
| referential vagueness | неки, нешто, негде, некад | which person, thing, place, or time |
| approximation | отприлике, око, десетак | the exact number, amount, or time |
Можда ће састанак бити премештен у већу салу.
The meeting may be moved to a larger room.
Некако ми овај распоред делује превише збијено.
This schedule somehow feels too cramped to me.
Доћи ћу око шест, ако не буде гужве на мосту.
I'll come at around six, if there isn't traffic on the bridge.
The first leaves truth open; the second softens how the speaker formulates an evaluation; the third limits precision. Only context can show whether a speaker is uncertain because information is unavailable or because a socially gentler formulation is preferred.
Можда, вероватно, and ваљда
Можда presents a possibility without ranking it as likely. Вероватно commits to a probability judgment. Both combine directly with ordinary finite clauses.
Можда је пакет остао код комшије, а можда га курир још није донео.
Maybe the package was left with the neighbor, or perhaps the courier has not brought it yet.
Вероватно су погрешили број стана, јер на сандучету нема обавештења.
They probably got the apartment number wrong, because there is no notice in the mailbox.
Ваљда presents a supposition filtered through the speaker's expectation: “I suppose,” “presumably,” or “surely.” It may invite the listener to share an inference, and with certain intonation it can show impatience that the answer ought to be obvious.
Ваљда ће нам јавити ако се време поласка промени.
I assume they'll let us know if the departure time changes.
Ваљда знаш да не можеш да оставиш бицикл испред излаза.
Surely you know you can't leave a bicycle in front of the exit. (potentially admonishing)
The second is not a neutral low-confidence claim. Ваљда appeals to an expected shared norm and may threaten the listener's competence. In careful (formal) or (academic) reporting, use an evidence-specific form such as вероватно or по свему судећи rather than conversational ваљда.
Некако: manner, formulation, and unease
Literal некако means “somehow,” with the manner unknown.
Некако смо унели ормар кроз уски ходник, али не знам како ћемо га изнети.
Somehow we got the wardrobe through the narrow hallway, but I don't know how we'll get it out.
As a stance hedge, некако signals that the impression is real but hard to formulate precisely.
Некако ми се чини да смо прескочили важан корак у провери.
I somehow get the feeling that we skipped an important step in the review.
Овај завршетак ми је некако нагао у односу на остатак приче.
This ending feels somewhat abrupt to me compared with the rest of the story.
The dative ми marks the experiencer. This construction can make criticism less categorical, but it does not remove it. English kind of maps differently depending on meaning: degree помало, partial truth донекле, difficult-to-name impression некако, or no hedge at all.
Чини ми се, рекао бих, and knowledge limits
Multiword frames make the source of caution explicit.
- чини ми се да... — it seems to me that...;
- рекао бих / рекла бих да... — I would say that...;
- колико знам... — as far as I know...;
- ако се добро сећам... — if I remember correctly...;
- по свој прилици... — in all likelihood (formal);
- наводно... — reportedly/allegedly, attributing the claim to another source.
Чини ми се да ова одредба важи само за уговоре потписане после јануара.
It seems to me that this provision applies only to contracts signed after January.
Рекла бих да је друга верзија јаснија, али бих проверила и последњи пасус.
I would say the second version is clearer, but I would also check the final paragraph. (female speaker)
Колико знам, пријава се подноси електронски, али проверите упутство.
As far as I know, the application is submitted electronically, but check the instructions.
These frames honestly limit commitment. They should not be used to disguise knowledge the speaker actually has a duty to provide. Наводно differs especially: it attributes a report and often distances the speaker from its truth.
Компанија ће наводно објавити резултате почетком следеће недеље.
The company will reportedly announce the results at the beginning of next week.
Отприлике, око, and approximate numerals
Отприлике means approximately and can modify time, amount, measurement, or a numerical estimate. Око is compact before a quantity or time expression. Approximate numeral forms such as десетак and двадесетак mean roughly ten or twenty.
Разговор је трајао отприлике четрдесет минута.
The conversation lasted approximately forty minutes.
У сали је било око тридесет учесника и десетак новинара.
There were around thirty participants and about ten journalists in the hall.
Стижемо за двадесетак минута; већ смо прошли наплатну рампу.
We'll arrive in about twenty minutes; we've already passed the tollbooth.
Do not force false precision by translating English about as an exact range unless the range is known. Conversely, do not pile око отприлике together in careful speech or writing; choose one approximation strategy. Natural conversation may contain redundant planning and self-correction, but edited prose should not present two markers as if each added a separate mathematical meaning.
Numeral government remains intact: око тридесет учесника still has genitive plural учесника, and четрдесет минута has genitive plural after the numeral.
Indefinite words leave identity open
Неко, нешто, неки, негде, and некад can keep a referent unspecified because it is unknown, irrelevant, or deliberately withheld.
Неко је оставио поруку за тебе на рецепцији.
Someone left a message for you at reception.
Наћи ћемо се негде близу станице, па ћу ти послати тачну локацију.
We'll meet somewhere near the station, and then I'll send you the exact location. (informal singular)
Треба нам неко једноставније решење које не захтева нову опрему.
We need some simpler solution that does not require new equipment.
In the last example, неко agrees as neuter nominative singular with решење. It does not mean a person. Deliberate vagueness can be useful while plans remain open, but it can frustrate the listener when a decision or responsibility needs a name.
Hedging disagreement without losing the point
Negative frames often soften evaluations:
Нисам сигурна да ће ова мера решити узрок проблема.
I'm not sure this measure will solve the cause of the problem. (female speaker)
Не бих рекао да су резултати неупотребљиви, али узорак је сувише мали.
I wouldn't say the results are unusable, but the sample is too small. (male speaker)
Последња тачка није баш довољно прецизна за уговор.
The final clause is not quite precise enough for a contract.
These forms lower categorical force but leave the substantive objection visible. An accumulation of hedges can obscure responsibility: можда ми се некако чини да би вероватно burdens the listener with recovering the claim.
Parallel dialogues
Informal planning
— Кад отприлике стижеш? — Ваљда око седам, али можда и касније ако буде гужве. — У реду, јави ми кад кренеш.
— About when will you arrive? — Probably around seven, but maybe later if there is traffic. — All right, let me know when you set off. (informal singular)
Отприлике/око concern time precision, ваљда expresses the speaker's current expectation, and можда opens a competing possibility.
Formal assessment
— Колико можемо да се ослонимо на ову процену? — По свему судећи, општи тренд је поуздан, али бих рекла да је број од отприлике пет хиљада још привремен. — Дакле, у извештају треба јасно да наведемо ограничење.
— How much can we rely on this estimate? — Judging by all the evidence, the overall trend is reliable, but I would say the figure of approximately five thousand is still provisional. — Then we should state the limitation clearly in the report. (female second speaker; formal)
The professional exchange identifies both evidence and uncertainty. The hedge does not substitute for the explicit label привремен.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Separate certainty from precision
Write four versions of one travel update using можда, вероватно, ваљда, and отприлике. Explain whether each version changes the probability of arrival, the speaker's expectation, or only the exact time.
Task 2: Hedge one claim responsibly
Turn a categorical criticism of a report into a measured professional comment using чини ми се or не бих рекао/рекла, but retain one concrete problem and one proposed check.
Common Mistakes
❌ Можда да ће воз каснити због снега.
Incorrect neutral possibility construction—можда combines directly with the finite future form ће каснити.
✅ Можда ће воз каснити због снега на прузи.
The train may be late because of snow on the line.
❌ Чини ме се да смо погрешили датум.
Incorrect experiencer case—чинити се takes dative ми, not accusative ме.
✅ Чини ми се да смо погрешили датум у последњој поруци.
It seems to me that we got the date wrong in the last message.
❌ По моје мишљење, цена је превисока.
Incorrect case—по in this fixed viewpoint phrase takes locative мом мишљењу.
✅ По мом мишљењу, цена је превисока за половну опрему.
In my opinion, the price is too high for used equipment.
❌ Ваљда је да ће нам послати потврду.
Incorrect clause structure—ваљда modifies the finite clause directly and does not take је да.
✅ Ваљда ће нам послати потврду пре краја радног дана.
I assume they'll send us confirmation before the end of the working day.
Key Takeaways
- Можда opens a possibility, вероватно assesses probability, and ваљда expresses a subjective inference or expectation.
- Некако can denote unknown manner or soften a hard-to-formulate impression; English kind of has no single Serbian equivalent.
- Отприлике, око, and approximate numerals reduce numerical precision without necessarily reducing confidence.
- Чини ми се, рекао/рекла бих, колико знам, and по свој прилици identify different reasons for limited commitment.
- A useful hedge states uncertainty honestly; it should not bury the claim under multiple vague markers.
