Serbian politeness is not a word-for-word equivalent of English please. A request sounds appropriate when several choices work together: ти or polite ви, imperative or question, indicative or conditional, aspect, particles, an acknowledgment of the burden, and tone. The same sentence can be warm between friends, efficient in a routine service encounter, or abrupt when addressed to a stranger with no preparation.
This page treats requests as social actions. For the imperative paradigm itself, use imperative forms and polite usage; for the basic formulas молим, хвала, and извините, see please, thanks, and apologies.
Start with relationship and burden
Before choosing a construction, assess two variables:
- Relationship: one familiar person (ти), several people (ви), or one politely addressed person (ви/Ви).
- Burden: a routine action, a real favor, or a substantial change to the listener's plans.
The grammatical scale below is useful, but it is not a ladder on which longer always means politer.
| Request shape | Typical force | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| Пошаљи ми адресу. | direct familiar imperative | friend; expected action |
| Пошаљите ми адресу, молим вас. | polite/plural imperative | routine professional exchange |
| Можете ли да ми пошаљете адресу? | neutral indirect request | stranger or colleague |
| Да ли бисте могли да ми пошаљете адресу? | conditional, more deferential | larger favor or greater distance |
| Ако вам није тешко, пошаљите ми адресу. | acknowledges effort | favor that inconveniences the listener |
Можеш ли да ми причуваш ранац док купим карту?
Could you watch my backpack while I buy a ticket? (informal singular)
Можете ли да ми потврдите да је уплата евидентирана?
Could you confirm that the payment has been recorded? (polite or plural)
The present можеш/можете ли asks about ability on the surface but normally functions as a request. English can you behaves similarly, yet Serbian must keep every dependent form aligned with the chosen address: можеш — причуваш, but можете — потврдите.
The conditional creates room to refuse
The conditional of моћи is especially useful when compliance is not routine or when the listener has legitimate reasons to refuse. Polite singular and true plural both use бисте могли; context identifies which is meant.
Да ли бисте могли да померите рок за понедељак?
Would you be able to move the deadline to Monday?
Бисте ли ми, молим вас, објаснили на шта се односи последња ставка?
Would you please explain what the last item refers to?
The second version fronts бисте ли, then places dative clitic ми in its normal cluster position. Both orders are standard. The conditional reduces the presumption that the listener must comply; it does not make the request vague.
Желео/желела бих packages a request from the speaker's perspective. The l-participle agrees with the speaker, not the listener.
Желела бих да закажем преглед за следећу недељу.
I would like to schedule an appointment for next week. (female speaker)
Желео бих да проверим да ли сте примили моју пријаву.
I would like to check whether you received my application. (male speaker)
This is neutral to (formal) in service and professional settings. Among close friends, repeated желео бих can sound ceremonious; ordinary хоћеш ли, можеш ли, or an appropriately toned imperative is often warmer.
Imperatives are not inherently rude
A Serbian imperative can be an instruction, invitation, practical request, or command. Institutional roles sometimes make a direct form the clearest polite choice.
Изволите, седите овде док припремимо документа.
Please have a seat here while we prepare the documents. (polite hospitality)
Потпишите се на означеном месту, молим вас.
Please sign in the marked place. (routine formal instruction)
Додај ми ону плаву фасциклу, молим те.
Pass me that blue folder, please. (informal singular)
In these settings the requested action is expected, so a conditional may add unnecessary distance. Intonation still matters: sharp stress on одмах can make a grammatically polite plural imperative sound like an order.
Aspect contributes to the request's viewpoint. Perfective пошаљите targets one completed result; imperfective седите can invite the listener into an ongoing state. Aspect alone never guarantees politeness, and a verb's conventional usage matters more than a mechanical perfective/imperfective rule.
Acknowledge effort without scripting the answer
Serbian has several frames that explicitly recognize inconvenience:
- ако ти/вам није тешко — if it is not too much trouble;
- ако можеш/можете — if you can;
- кад стигнеш/стигнете — when you get a chance;
- не бих да те/вас задржавам — I would not want to keep you;
- имаш/имате ли можда... — do you perhaps have...?
Ако вам није тешко, пошаљите нам и копију рачуна.
If it isn't too much trouble, please send us a copy of the invoice as well.
Кад стигнеш, погледај да ли сам добро попунила табелу.
When you get a chance, check whether I filled in the table correctly. (female speaker addressing one familiar person)
Имате ли можда пуњач који бих могла накратко да позајмим?
Would you happen to have a charger I could borrow briefly? (female speaker)
The hedge можда does not literally question whether the charger exists; it lowers the speaker's entitlement to the favor. Do not stack every available softener. A sentence containing извините + можда + да ли бисте могли + ако вам није тешко + молим вас can sound anxious or manipulative rather than considerate.
Indirect hints need shared context
English and Serbian both permit a statement to function as a request: “It is cold in here” may invite someone to close a window. Hints protect the speaker from imposing, but they also force the listener to infer the desired action.
Баш вуче од прозора; да ли бисмо могли да га затворимо?
There is quite a draft from the window; could we close it?
Остало нам је још само десет минута, па бих вас замолила да пређете на закључак.
We have only ten minutes left, so I would ask you to move to the conclusion. (female moderator; formal)
The first example makes the requested action explicit after giving a reason. The second uses замолила бих вас да..., a professional frame in which accusative вас names the person asked and да + present names the action. Pure hints are risky when safety, deadlines, or responsibilities require clarity.
Parallel dialogues: same task, different relationship
Familiar and low-burden
— Јелена, можеш ли да ми пошаљеш фотографије са састанка? — Могу, само ме подсети вечерас. — Важи, хвала ти.
— Jelena, can you send me the photographs from the meeting? — Sure, just remind me tonight. — All right, thanks. (informal singular)
This exchange uses a present modal request, familiar clitics ми/ме/ти, and a brief imperative between people who accept direct coordination.
Professional and higher-burden
— Госпођо Радовић, да ли бисте могли да нам пошаљете ревидирану понуду до сутра у подне? — Покушаћу, али не могу да обећам да ће бити готова пре два. — Разумем; ако не стигнете, пошаљите је до краја дана.
— Ms Radović, would you be able to send us the revised offer by noon tomorrow? — I'll try, but I can't promise it will be ready before two. — I understand; if you don't manage it, send it by the end of the day. (formal singular)
The vocative title and бисте могли recognize distance and burden. The requester then accepts a constraint and offers an alternative. Politeness comes from the whole negotiation, not only the first sentence.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Calibrate the same request
Ask for a twenty-minute schedule change in three settings: to a close friend, to an unfamiliar receptionist, and to a client. Use one appropriate form from можеш ли, можете ли, and да ли бисте могли, then explain why the burden and relationship justify it.
Task 2: Build a request with an exit
Write a professional request that gives a reason, states the action clearly, and offers an acceptable later deadline if the first one is impossible. Keep ви forms consistent throughout.
Common Mistakes
❌ Можете ли да ми пошаљеш нови образац?
Incorrect person agreement—можете addresses ви, but пошаљеш addresses singular ти.
✅ Можете ли да ми пошаљете нови образац кад буде спреман?
Could you send me the new form when it is ready?
❌ Да ли би могли да нам одговорите до петка, госпођо Илић?
Incorrect conditional agreement—polite ви requires бисте, not би.
✅ Да ли бисте могли да нам одговорите до петка, госпођо Илић?
Would you be able to reply to us by Friday, Ms Ilić?
❌ Замолио бих вама да проверите овај износ.
Incorrect government—замолити takes the person asked in the accusative, вас.
✅ Замолио бих вас да проверите овај износ пре уплате.
I would ask you to check this amount before payment. (male speaker)
❌ Ако вам није тешко, пошаљи ми потврду.
Incorrect address match—вам establishes ви, so the imperative must be пошаљите.
✅ Ако вам није тешко, пошаљите ми потврду до краја дана.
If it isn't too much trouble, send me the confirmation by the end of the day.
Key Takeaways
- Serbian requests combine address choice, mood, aspect, particles, reasons, and tone; молим alone does not create politeness.
- Use можете ли for a neutral indirect request and да ли бисте могли when greater distance or burden calls for more room to refuse.
- Direct imperatives are natural in routine instructions, service encounters, hospitality, and familiar coordination.
- Acknowledge genuine effort with ако вам није тешко, кад стигнете, or an alternative, but avoid piling up softeners.
- Keep every verb, pronoun, title, and participle consistent with ти or ви.
