Please, Thank You, and Apologies

Serbian does not have one word that can be inserted wherever English uses please. Молим, хвала, извините, опростите, and изволите are small grammatical constructions with different participants and social purposes. Politeness comes from matching ти/ви, choosing an appropriate request shape, and using the right case—not from one magic particle.

Молим has several jobs

As part of a request, молим те addresses one familiar person and молим вас addresses several people or one person politely. Те/вас are accusative because the verb молити takes the person asked as a direct object.

Молим те, остави ми кључ код комшинице.

Please leave the key for me with the neighbor. (informal singular)

Молим вас, реците ми где могу да предам образац.

Please tell me where I can submit the form. (polite or plural)

The familiar imperative остави matches те; polite/plural реците matches вас. The pronoun can follow the request too:

Једну минералну воду без леда, молим вас.

One mineral water without ice, please.

The ordered item is accusative једну минералну воду. The service phrase omits a verb such as “bring/give,” but its case survives.

Standalone молим also answers хвала with “you're welcome.” It can invite someone to repeat what they said—“pardon?”—and, with suitable intonation, answer when one's name is called. Context and intonation distinguish these uses.

— Хвала што сте сачекали. — Молим, нема проблема.

— Thank you for waiting. — You're welcome; no problem.

💡
Learn молим те/вас as a verb with an accusative person. The same form молим can be a request marker or a response to thanks, but those are separate conversational moves.

Хвала selects the person and the reason differently

The person receiving thanks is dative: хвала ти, хвала вам, хвала јој.

Хвала ти на поруци; стигла је баш на време.

Thank you for the message; it arrived just in time. (informal singular)

Хвала вам на стрпљењу и детаљном објашњењу.

Thank you for your patience and the detailed explanation. (polite or plural)

The reason commonly follows на + locative: на помоћи, на савету, на времену. An action can follow што + finite verb:

Хвала што си ме подсетила на рок.

Thank you for reminding me about the deadline. (informal; female addressee)

Хвала вам што сте тако брзо одговорили.

Thank you for replying so quickly. (polite or plural)

In direct respectful correspondence to one person, Ви/Вам/Вас may be capitalized: Хвала Вам. Lowercase is obligatory for true plural and also common in contemporary professional email; consistency within one message matters.

Useful intensifiers include много хвала, хвала лепо, and најлепше хвала. The last is warmer or more emphatic and need not suit every routine transaction.

Responding to thanks

The most dependable answers are молим and нема на чему.

— Хвала вам на преводу. — Нема на чему, драго ми је да је био користан.

— Thank you for the translation. — You're welcome; I'm glad it was useful.

На чему contains locative чему after на: literally, “there is nothing for which [to thank me].” Нема проблема is informal to neutral and reassures the other person that the favor caused no trouble. Ништа alone can dismiss thanks in casual speech, but learners should prefer the fuller formulas until the tone is familiar.

English no worries does not require a word-for-word calque. Нема проблема, ништа страшно, or у реду је are selected according to whether the speaker is answering thanks, accepting an apology, or calming concern.

Attention-getting and ordinary apologies

Извини addresses one familiar person. Извините addresses several people or one person politely. The same forms can introduce a question without claiming serious fault.

Извини, да ли знаш када полази последњи аутобус?

Excuse me, do you know when the last bus leaves? (informal singular)

Извините, можете ли да ми покажете где је лифт?

Excuse me, could you show me where the elevator is? (polite)

For an actual mistake, state the reason with што + finite clause or због + genitive:

Извините што касним; воз је стајао између две станице.

I'm sorry I'm late; the train stopped between two stations.

Извини због неспоразума око термина.

Sorry about the misunderstanding over the time. (informal singular)

Извињавам се is a present reflexive formula, common in neutral and (formal) apologies. The clitic се occupies its normal early position when another constituent precedes it.

Заиста се извињавам због погрешно послатог рачуна.

I sincerely apologize for the incorrectly sent invoice.

Do not add nominative ја merely because English says I apologize. It is possible for contrast, but neutral Serbian normally lets извињавам identify the speaker.

Опрости/опростите and жао ми је

Опрости and опростите literally ask the listener to forgive. They can therefore sound more personal or weightier than attention-getting извини/извините.

Опрости што ти нисам раније рекла истину.

Forgive me for not telling you the truth earlier. (female speaker, informal singular)

Опростите због непријатности коју смо вам изазвали.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience we caused you. (formal or plural)

Жао ми је presents regret as an impersonal state with a dative experiencer ми. It may apologize, sympathize, or express bad news; the following clause makes the meaning clear.

Жао ми је што не могу да дођем на прославу.

I'm sorry that I can't come to the celebration.

For a business apology, Жао нам је због кашњења makes the organization the dative experiencer нам. For a personal offense, опрости can acknowledge the relationship more directly.

Изволите is an offer, invitation, and handover

Изволите is a polite/plural imperative used when giving something, inviting someone to act, letting someone go first, or yielding the floor.

Изволите ваш рачун и кусур.

Here are your receipt and change.

Изволите, уђите; директор ће вас сада примити.

Please come in; the director will see you now.

Familiar singular изволи is natural among family, friends, and with a child. Изволите does not translate one English word consistently: here you are, go ahead, come in, and after you may all fit.

Request strength and social distance

A direct imperative can be perfectly polite in a routine interaction when its person form and tone fit. A question gives the listener more room to refuse; a conditional question is more deferential.

Додај ми хлеб, молим те.

Pass me the bread, please. (informal singular)

Можете ли да ми пошаљете потврду до краја дана?

Could you send me the confirmation by the end of the day?

Да ли бисте могли да померите разговор за следећу недељу?

Would you be able to move the interview to next week?

The last form suits a request that imposes a real change. Using it to buy one bread roll can sound needlessly ceremonious; using a bare singular imperative to an unfamiliar official can sound too direct. For a fuller system, see using the imperative politely.

Situational dialogue

— Извините, можете ли да ми помогнете око овог формулара? — Наравно, изволите. Упишите адресу овде. — Хвала вам на помоћи. — Молим, нема на чему. — И извините што сам вас задржала. — У реду је, не брините.

— Excuse me, could you help me with this form? — Of course; here you are. Enter the address here. — Thank you for your help. — You're welcome. — And I'm sorry for taking up your time. — It's all right; don't worry. (female customer)

The dialogue keeps polite plural forms можете, вам, вас, упишите, не брините. Instrumental овим формуларом would follow с, but the expression помоћи око + genitive uses овог формулара.

Practice

Task 1: Keep the relationship consistent

Turn Извини, можеш ли да ми помогнеш? into a request to one unfamiliar person. Change the apology, modal verb, and any pronouns, then add хвала + dative.

Task 2: Choose the apology

Write one attention-getting извините, one personal опрости, and one formal извињавам се због + genitive. Explain why the three situations require different force.

Common Mistakes

❌ Молим ти, затвори врата кад изађеш.

Incorrect case—молити takes the person asked in the accusative, so use те.

✅ Молим те, затвори врата кад изађеш.

Please close the door when you leave. (informal singular)

❌ Хвала вам на брзу помоћ.

Incorrect case—на in this formula requires the locative phrase на брзој помоћи.

✅ Хвала вам на брзој помоћи.

Thank you for your quick help.

❌ Госпођо, извини што те прекидам.

Inconsistent address—the formal title requires polite plural forms.

✅ Госпођо, извините што вас прекидам.

Excuse me for interrupting you, ma'am.

❌ Извињавам због кашњења воза.

Incorrect—the apology formula is reflexive извињавам се.

✅ Извињавам се због кашњења воза.

I apologize for the train delay.
