Dative: The Indirect Object

The dative indirect object names the recipient of an object or message and the beneficiary for whom an action is performed. Serbian does not need a separate word equivalent to English to in дати Ани књигу ‘give Ana a book.’ The ending on Ани packages the recipient role.

Most transfer sentences therefore have two objects: an accusative theme—the thing transferred—and a dative endpoint—the person or institution receiving it. Word order can change for emphasis, but the cases preserve those roles.

Recipient plus Theme

RoleQuestionCaseExample
giver/senderwho acts?nominativeуредница
recipientto whom?dativeновинару
themewhat is transferred?accusativeдокумент

Уредница је новинару послала исправљен документ пре подне.

The editor sent the journalist the corrected document before noon.

Новинару remains the recipient if it moves to the front:

Новинару је уредница послала документ, а фотографу само кратку поруку.

The editor sent the document to the journalist, but only a short message to the photographer.

Fronting makes the two recipients contrastive. It does not turn them into subjects, because уредница still controls the feminine verb participle послала.

Common Transfer and Communication Verbs

The recipient dative occurs with verbs such as дати ‘give,’ поклонити ‘give as a gift,’ послати ‘send,’ донети ‘bring,’ позајмити ‘lend,’ понудити ‘offer,’ показати ‘show,’ рећи ‘tell,’ објаснити ‘explain,’ and јавити ‘let know.’

Позајмио сам комшиници бушилицу, али сам јој рекао да ми је врати до петка.

I lent the neighbor a drill, but I told her to return it to me by Friday.

Водич је туристима показао краћи пут до тврђаве.

The guide showed the tourists a shorter route to the fortress.

The dative is selected by the transfer frame, not by an overt Serbian equivalent of to. Adding за would change or distort that frame.

💡
Store transfer verbs with two slots: послати нешто некоме ‘send something to someone,’ показати нешто некоме ‘show something to someone.’ This is more reliable than translating English word order.

Beneficiary: The Person an Action Is For

A beneficiary receives the result or advantage of an action even when no physical object changes hands.

Спремили смо гостима лагану вечеру јер стижу касно.

We prepared the guests a light dinner because they are arriving late.

Деда је унуци поправио бицикл пре њеног првог тренинга.

Grandpa repaired his granddaughter's bicycle for her before her first practice.

The event поправити бицикл is complete without унуци; adding the dative identifies the person who benefits. Depending on context, the same dative may also be understood as the possessor of the bicycle. Serbian allows this overlap because both readings present the person as centrally affected.

Dative versus за + Accusative

English for does not always correspond to dative. The dative integrates a beneficiary into the event; за + accusative often labels intended purpose, destination, or the person for whom an item is set aside.

Купила сам сестри карту и одмах сам јој је послала.

I bought my sister a ticket and sent it to her immediately. (sister is the beneficiary and recipient)

Купила сам карту за сестру, али јој је још нисам дала.

I bought a ticket for my sister, but I have not given it to her yet. (the ticket is intended for her)

The first sentence presents the sister as benefiting from the purchase. The second focuses on the ticket's intended destination and explicitly says transfer has not happened. In many purchase contexts both constructions can be natural, but they do not impose exactly the same viewpoint.

Noun Phrases and Pronoun Forms

Full noun phrases take ordinary dative endings. Personal pronouns have full and clitic forms:

PersonFull dativeClitic
1st singularменими
2nd singularтебити
3rd singular masculine/neuterњемуму
3rd singular feminineњојјој
1st pluralнаманам
2nd plural/formalвамавам
3rd pluralњимаим

Use a full form for contrast, focus, or after a preposition. Use a clitic for a neutral, already known recipient.

Мени су послали потврду, а њему само рачун.

They sent the confirmation to me, but only the invoice to him.

Јутрос сам јој оставио кључеве код рецепције.

This morning I left the keys for her at reception.

The clitic јој cannot bear contrastive stress. The full forms мени, њему can.

Clitic Placement and Object Clusters

Dative clitics belong near the beginning of the clause, in the regular second-position cluster. When both dative and accusative pronoun clitics occur, dative precedes accusative.

Јуче сам му га коначно вратила.

Yesterday I finally returned it to him.

Нисмо им је показали јер резултати још нису били коначни.

We did not show it to them because the results were not final yet.

In му га, му is dative ‘to him’ and га accusative ‘it.’ In им је, им is dative plural and је is feminine accusative ‘it’; it is not the auxiliary је. The full clitic cluster chart explains the complete sequence.

💡
Do not confuse им ‘to them’ with их ‘them.’ Transfer toward a plural recipient requires dative им: Послали смо им позив.

Passive Sentences Preserve the Recipient

When the theme becomes a passive subject, the recipient remains dative.

Уговор је послат клијенту на потпис.

The contract was sent to the client for signature.

Active Послали су клијенту уговор and passive Уговор је послат клијенту describe the same recipient relation. The change of voice affects the theme's grammatical status, not the endpoint.

Not Every Person after a Verb Is Dative

Verb government outranks an intuitive ‘person affected’ rule. Питати ‘ask’ and молити ‘ask/request’ take an accusative person, not dative.

Питала сам колегу када почиње састанак.

I asked my colleague when the meeting starts.

Замолили смо директорку да продужи рок.

We asked the director to extend the deadline.

By contrast, рећи колеги and објаснити директорки use dative because those verbs frame the person as a recipient of speech or information.

Syncretism: Recipient or Location Topic?

Dative and locative look alike, but only the dative can be the indirect object.

Шаљемо новом клијенту детаљну понуду.

We are sending the new client a detailed offer. (dative recipient)

Говоримо о новом клијенту на састанку.

We are talking about the new client at the meeting. (locative topic)

The form новом клијенту is identical. The transfer verb supplies the dative relation; о supplies the locative relation.

Task 1: Find Recipient and Theme

Identify the dative recipient and accusative theme, then reverse their order without changing the endings.

Рецепционарка је госту предала резервни кључ.

The receptionist handed the guest a spare key. (recipient: госту; theme: резервни кључ)

Резервни кључ је рецепционарка предала госту.

It was the spare key that the receptionist handed to the guest.

The second order highlights the key, but госту still marks the endpoint and кључ still marks the transferred theme.

Task 2: Choose Dative or за + Accusative

Use dative when the person participates as beneficiary or recipient; use за + accusative when something is designated or set aside.

Направили смо деци ужину пре излета.

We made the children a snack before the excursion. (beneficiary dative)

Ова кутија је за децу из суседне школе.

This box is for the children from the neighboring school. (intended group: за + accusative)

Common Mistakes

Adding a translation of to

❌ Послала сам поруку ка Марку.

Incorrect for a message recipient — ка means ‘toward,’ not the indirect-object ‘to.’

✅ Послала сам Марку поруку.

I sent Marko a message.

Marking the recipient accusative

❌ Показали смо новог колегу канцеларију.

Incorrect — the colleague is the recipient of showing and must be dative.

✅ Показали смо новом колеги канцеларију.

We showed the new colleague the office.

Using a dative after питати

❌ Питала сам конобару да ли има слободан сто.

Incorrect — питати takes an accusative person.

✅ Питала сам конобара да ли има слободан сто.

I asked the waiter whether there was a free table.

Using их for a plural recipient

❌ Послали смо их распоред електронском поштом.

Incorrect for ‘to them’ — их is accusative/genitive, not dative.

✅ Послали смо им распоред електронском поштом.

We sent them the schedule by email.

Putting the dative clitic after the verb

❌ Јуче послао сам јој коначну верзију.

Incorrect — the unstressed auxiliary and dative clitic belong in the second-position cluster.

✅ Јуче сам јој послао коначну верзију.

Yesterday I sent her the final version.

Key Takeaways

  • A transfer construction typically contains an accusative theme and a dative recipient.
  • Beneficiary dative and за + accusative overlap in some contexts but profile participation versus intended destination differently.
  • Neutral pronoun recipients use dative clitics ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им in second position.
  • Learn verb government: рећи некоме, but питати некога.
