Dative with Verbs and Adjectives

Many Serbian verbs and adjectives require a dative complement even when their English equivalents use a direct object or a variety of prepositions. This is government: the lexical item determines the case of its complement. Learning помоћи without некоме, or сличан without нечему, leaves out part of the word's grammar.

The constructions cluster around directedness, relevance, response, and similarity. Those meanings help memory, but they do not replace lexical learning. English help someone, believe someone, and be similar to something all lead to dative in Serbian for different local reasons.

The Dative Complement in Form

Whether selected by a verb or adjective, the whole complement declines:

Base phraseDative complementGovernor
нови колегановом колегипомоћи новом колеги
млада лекаркамладој лекаркиверовати младој лекарки
мало селомалом селуприближити се малом селу
стари моделистарим моделимасличан старим моделима

Помогли смо новом колеги да припреми салу за презентацију.

We helped the new colleague prepare the room for the presentation.

The verb selects dative; gender and number determine новом колеги. No Serbian preposition equivalent to English to is needed.

💡
Record government in dictionary-style frames: помоћи некоме, бојати се нечега, управљати нечим. The case slot is part of the lexical entry.

Verbs of Assistance, Trust, and Response

High-frequency dative-governing verbs include:

VerbMeaningModel
помоћи / помагатиhelpпомоћи пријатељици
веровати / повероватиbelieve, trustверовати сведоку
сметати / засметатиbother, be in the way ofсметати комшијама
одговаратиsuit, be convenient forодговарати клијенту
служити / послужитиserve; be useful toслужити заједници
претити / запретитиthreatenпретити противнику

Не верујем том огласу јер у њему нема адресе фирме.

I do not trust that advertisement because it contains no company address.

Да ли вам смета музика из суседног стана?

Does the music from the neighboring apartment bother you?

Термин у девет не одговара нашим клијентима.

The nine o'clock appointment does not suit our clients.

In the last two sentences, музика and термин are nominative subjects. The dative participants вам and нашим клијентима are the people affected by those subjects. English word order can hide this structure.

Direction and Orientation

Verbs expressing approach, attachment, resistance, or orientation frequently select dative: прићи/прилазити, приближити се, окренути се, придружити се, супротставити се, посветити се.

Када смо се приближили раскрсници, окренули смо се центру града.

When we approached the intersection, we turned toward the city center.

После паузе придружила се осталим учесницима у великој сали.

After the break, she joined the other participants in the main hall.

The reflexive particle се is part of several of these verbs; it does not replace the dative complement. Learn придружити се некоме, not just придружити.

The prepositions ка and према also govern dative and make spatial or abstract orientation explicit:

Према новом плану, пешачка стаза води ка главном улазу.

According to the new plan, the footpath leads toward the main entrance.

Emotion, Evaluation, and Experience

With свиђати се, пријати, недостајати, допадати се, and радовати се, the dative often marks an experiencer or emotional target.

Мојим родитељима се допада нови стан, али им недостаје башта.

My parents like the new apartment, but they miss having a garden.

После дугог пута свима нам је пријала топла супа.

After the long journey, all of us enjoyed the warm soup.

In родитељима се допада стан, стан is the subject and controls singular допада. English reverses the perspective and makes ‘my parents’ the subject of like. The case choice and agreement must follow the Serbian predicate.

The broader contrast between this experiencer structure and a direct-object verb is developed on the like and love verbs page.

💡
With experiencer predicates, locate the nominative stimulus before choosing agreement: Допада ми се кућа, but Допадају ми се куће.

Verbs with an Additional Prepositional Complement

Some verbs govern a person in dative and a topic or occasion in a second phrase. Learn the whole frame:

FrameMeaning
захвалити некоме на нечемуthank someone for something
честитати некоме на нечемуcongratulate someone on something
замерити некоме на нечемуhold something against someone
извинити се некоме због нечегаapologize to someone for something

Захвалили смо домаћинима на гостопримству и извинили им се због кашњења.

We thanked our hosts for their hospitality and apologized to them for being late.

Честитала је брату на положеном испиту.

She congratulated her brother on passing the exam.

The person is dative; на + locative or због + genitive supplies the reason or occasion. English prepositions cannot be transferred one by one.

Adjectives That Govern Dative

Dative-governing adjectives often express similarity, closeness, loyalty, suitability, usefulness, accessibility, or disposition.

AdjectiveMeaningModel
сличанsimilar toсличан претходном моделу
једнакequal toједнак оригиналу
близакclose toблизак породици
веран / оданfaithful / devoted toодан пријатељима
користан / штетанuseful / harmful toкористан почетницима
доступанavailable / accessible toдоступан корисницима
склонprone / inclined toсклон променама

Нови програм је користан почетницима, али није доступан свим корисницима.

The new program is useful to beginners, but it is not available to all users.

Овај предлог је веома сличан решењу које смо јуче одбили.

This proposal is very similar to the solution we rejected yesterday.

The adjective agrees with its subject: masculine програм је користан, masculine предлог је сличан. The dative complement does not control adjective agreement.

Similar Serbian Meanings, Different Government

Near-synonyms may require different structures. Сличан takes dative, but личити на takes на + accusative.

Млађи брат је сличан оцу по карактеру.

The younger brother is similar to his father in character.

Млађи брат личи на оца када се насмеје.

The younger brother looks like his father when he smiles.

Likewise, слушати takes accusative, while веровати takes dative:

Слушам професорку, али не верујем њеном асистенту.

I listen to the professor, but I do not trust her assistant.

There is no general rule that people receive dative and things receive accusative. The lexical governor determines the complement.

Syncretism with Locative

The same surface form can be dative under an adjective and locative after a preposition:

Овај поступак је штетан младим биљкама.

This procedure is harmful to young plants. (dative selected by штетан)

Читали смо о младим биљкама у градском парку.

We read about young plants in the city park. (locative after о)

The ending -ама cannot decide the case. Governor and role do.

Task 1: Complete the Government Frame

Put the given noun phrase in the case required by the bold governor.

веровати + искусна адвокатица → Верујемо искусној адвокатици.

trust + experienced lawyer → We trust the experienced lawyer.

сличан + стари систем → Нови програм је сличан старом систему.

similar to + old system → The new program is similar to the old system.

придружити се + остали гости → Придружили смо се осталим гостима.

join + the other guests → We joined the other guests.

Task 2: Choose between Competing Frames

Select сличан + dative or личити на + accusative, then make all modifiers agree.

Ова копија је слична оригиналном документу.

This copy is similar to the original document.

Ова копија личи на оригинални документ, али је папир другачији.

This copy looks like the original document, but the paper is different.

Common Mistakes

Treating помоћи like an English transitive verb

❌ Помогли смо нову комшиницу са намештајем.

Incorrect — помоћи governs dative, and око is the natural preposition for the task here.

✅ Помогли смо новој комшиници око намештаја.

We helped the new neighbor with the furniture.

Using accusative after веровати

❌ Не верујем тог човека.

Incorrect — веровати selects dative.

✅ Не верујем том човеку.

I do not trust that man.

Copying to into сличан

❌ Овај телефон је сличан на стари модел.

Incorrect — сличан takes a bare dative complement.

✅ Овај телефон је сличан старом моделу.

This phone is similar to the old model.

Making the dative experiencer control agreement

❌ Мени се свиђају овај стан.

Incorrect — singular овај стан is the subject, so the verb must be singular.

✅ Мени се свиђа овај стан.

I like this apartment.

Declining only the noun

❌ Приближили смо се стари згради.

Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the dative noun.

✅ Приближили смо се старој згради.

We approached the old building.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn a verb or adjective together with its governed case: помоћи некоме, веровати некоме, сличан нечему.
  • Experiencers are often dative, while the stimulus remains nominative and controls agreement.
  • Related Serbian expressions can govern different cases: сличан оцу, but личити на оца.
  • Dative and locative forms coincide, so identify the lexical governor before naming the case.
