Dative: Forms

The Serbian dative marks an endpoint or interested participant: someone receives a message, benefits from an action, experiences a state, or serves as the target of movement or comparison. This page focuses on building the forms. The key fact is that dative and locative have the same endings in contemporary Serbian, so a form such as новом граду does not identify its case by itself.

English often signals these relations with to or for. Serbian uses endings across the whole noun phrase. First identify the dative construction; then choose the ending from gender, number, and declension class.

Core Dative Endings

Noun classNominativeDativeModel phrase
masculine, consonantстудентстудентуовом новом студенту
masculine, soft consonantучитеључитељустрпљивом учитељу
masculine in -ататататимом тати
feminine in -аженажениовој љубазној жени
feminine consonant/i-stemноћноћитој мирној ноћи
neuter in -оселоселуовом малом селу
neuter in -епољепољушироком пољу
extended neuter stemдетедететуовом малом детету

Показао сам овом новом студенту где се налази читаоница.

I showed this new student where the reading room is.

The masculine and neuter noun ending is usually -у, while feminine -а nouns replace -а with -и. Masculine nouns in -а, such as тата and судија, follow the same -и pattern. Feminine consonant nouns also commonly have -и.

💡
Learn the dative as a phrase, not a noun ending: овом новом студенту, овој новој студенткињи, овом новом месту. The repeated marking makes agreement automatic.

Masculine and Neuter Singular

Most masculine consonant nouns add -у: град → граду, брат → брату, лекар → лекару. Neuter nouns in -о/-е replace that vowel with -у: место → месту, море → мору, питање → питању.

Пришли смо лекару после визите и поставили му још једно питање.

We approached the doctor after the ward round and asked him one more question.

Нови пут води ка селу, а стари скреће према мору.

The new road leads toward the village, while the old one turns toward the sea.

Neuter nouns with extended stems reveal that stem outside the nominative: име → имену, време → времену, дете → детету, теле → телету.

Дали су новом имену предност јер се лакше памти.

They gave the new name priority because it is easier to remember.

Animacy changes masculine accusative, but not dative. Both студенту and мосту use the same dative pattern.

Feminine -а Nouns and Stem Changes

Feminine -а nouns form dative singular in -и: сестра → сестри, школа → школи, улица → улици. Before -и, some stems ending in к, г, х undergo the regular alternations к → ц, г → з, х → с:

NominativeDativePhrase
мајкамајцисвојој мајци
књигакњизизанимљивој књизи
сврхасврсиистој сврси

Посветила је књигу својој мајци и захвалила јој на подршци.

She dedicated the book to her mother and thanked her for her support.

These changes are productive patterns, but proper names and some loanwords may preserve the consonant. The safe learning unit is the dictionary form plus a representative oblique form.

Feminine Consonant Nouns

Feminine nouns such as ноћ, ствар, реч, љубав, радост generally use -и: ноћи, ствари, речи, љубави, радости. Their dative can look close to another familiar form, but agreement shows the phrase clearly.

Радовали смо се мирној ноћи после напорне недеље.

We looked forward to a quiet night after a demanding week.

Вратила се истој ствари тек на крају разговора.

She returned to the same matter only at the end of the conversation.

The adjective forms мирној and истој are feminine dative singular. Leaving them in nominative would break agreement even if the noun ending were correct.

Plural Dative

In the plural, masculine and neuter nouns usually take -има, while feminine -а nouns take -ама. Feminine consonant nouns also take -има.

ClassNominative pluralDative pluralFull phrase
masculineстудентистудентимаовим студентима
feminine in -аколегиницеколегиницамаовим колегиницама
neuterместаместимаовим местима
feminine consonantстваристваримаовим стварима

Организатори су свим учесницима послали коначни распоред.

The organizers sent all participants the final schedule.

Новим колегиницама смо показали где могу да оставе ствари.

We showed the new female colleagues where they could leave their things.

The plural adjective/determiner ending is -им for all three genders: овим студентима, овим колегиницама, овим местима.

Phrase-Wide Agreement

Adjectives, demonstratives, and possessives agree with the dative noun:

Gender/numberNominative phraseDative phrase
masculine singularовај добар комшијаовом добром комшији
feminine singularова добра комшиницаовој доброј комшиници
neuter singularово мало местоовом малом месту
pluralови добри људиовим добрим људима

Овој доброј комшиници увек можемо да се обратимо за помоћ.

We can always turn to this kind neighbor for help.

Masculine комшија ends in -а and therefore has noun form комшији, even though its modifiers remain masculine: овом добром. Grammatical gender controls agreement; the noun's ending controls its declension pattern.

Dative Equals Locative in Form

Dative and locative singular and plural are syncretic: their forms coincide. The governor and meaning distinguish them.

Прилазимо старом мосту са јужне стране.

We are approaching the old bridge from the south side. (dative endpoint)

Разговарамо о старом мосту који треба обновити.

We are discussing the old bridge that needs renovation. (locative topic after о)

Both contain старом мосту. The verb прилазити licenses dative; the preposition о licenses locative. In the plural, dative, instrumental, and locative all share forms such as новим градовима.

💡
Never label -у, -и, -има, or -ама as dative from shape alone. Ask which preposition or predicate governs the phrase and what role it has.

Dative-Governing Prepositions

The main dative prepositions are ка/к ‘toward,’ према ‘toward; according to,’ упркос ‘despite,’ and насупрот ‘opposite; contrary to.’

Упркос лошем времену, кренули смо према планини пре свитања.

Despite the bad weather, we set off toward the mountain before dawn.

The same dative endings also appear without a preposition after verbs such as дати, помоћи, веровати, прићи, and сметати. The verbs and adjectives page organizes those governors.

Task 1: Build the Dative Phrase

Convert each nominative phrase to dative and use it in the model sentence.

нова библиотека → новој библиотеци: Прилазимо новој библиотеци из правца реке.

new library → to the new library: We are approaching the new library from the direction of the river.

мало дете → малом детету: Купили смо малом детету топлу јакну.

small child → for the small child: We bought the small child a warm jacket.

стари пријатељи → старим пријатељима: Јавили смо старим пријатељима када стижемо.

old friends → to the old friends: We told our old friends when we were arriving.

Task 2: Dative or Locative?

Name the case of the bold-form phrase by identifying its governor, not its ending.

Пишемо о новом ресторану у крају.

We are writing about the new restaurant in the neighborhood. (locative after о)

Пишемо новом ресторану због резервације.

We are writing to the new restaurant about the reservation. (dative addressee)

The phrase новом ресторану is identical, but о and the addressee role produce different case analyses.

Common Mistakes

Keeping the nominative noun

❌ Дао сам књигу мој брат.

Incorrect — the recipient must be dative.

✅ Дао сам књигу мом брату.

I gave the book to my brother.

Declining only the noun

❌ Обратила се нова директорки.

Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the dative noun.

✅ Обратила се новој директорки.

She addressed the new director.

Missing the feminine stem alternation

❌ Послала је поруку својој мајки.

Incorrect — мајка has dative мајци in the standard pattern.

✅ Послала је поруку својој мајци.

She sent her mother a message.

Giving a masculine -а noun feminine agreement

❌ Захвалила је љубазној судији.

Incorrect for a male judge — судија declines in -и, but its modifiers agree as masculine.

✅ Захвалила је љубазном судији.

She thanked the kind judge.

Calling every matching form dative

❌ Израз „у новом стану“ је у дативу јер облик стану може бити датив.

Incorrect analysis — у with static location governs locative.

✅ „Прилазимо новом стану“ садржи датив, а „живимо у новом стану“ локатив.

Прилазимо новом стану contains dative, while живимо у новом стану contains locative.

Key Takeaways

  • Masculine and neuter singular usually take -у; feminine -а nouns and feminine consonant nouns commonly take -и.
  • Plural dative uses -има or -ама, with modifiers in -им.
  • Every modifier agrees with the noun, including masculine nouns in -а such as судија.
  • Dative and locative share forms; the governor and meaning reveal the case.
