Locative: Forms

The Serbian locative is always used with a preposition. It most often marks a static location after у or на, a topic after о, or a distributed setting after по. Its forms are identical to dative forms, so новом граду can be locative or dative depending on the construction.

This means that learning an ending is only half the job. A preposition licenses the locative and supplies its relationship; gender, number, and declension class then determine the form across the entire noun phrase.

Core Locative Endings

Noun classNominativeLocativeModel phrase
masculine, consonantградградуу овом старом граду
masculine in -аколегаколегио новом колеги
feminine in -ашколашколиу овој новој школи
feminine consonant/i-stemноћноћио тихој ноћи
neuter in -оселоселуу овом малом селу
neuter in -епољепољуна широком пољу
extended neuter stemдетедететуо том детету

У овом старом граду сваког лета се одржава филмски фестивал.

A film festival is held in this old city every summer.

Masculine and neuter nouns usually take -у; feminine -а nouns and feminine consonant nouns commonly take -и. Masculine nouns in -а also take -и but keep masculine agreement: о новом колеги.

💡
Do not memorize locative as a bare noun form. Learn у граду, на послу, о књизи, по соби so that case and preposition stay connected.

Masculine and Neuter Singular

Most masculine consonant nouns add -у: стан → стану, парк → парку, разговор → разговору. Neuter nouns replace final -о/-е with -у: место → месту, море → мору, питање → питању.

У стану изнад нас живи породица са троје деце.

A family with three children lives in the apartment above us.

На мору је јутрос било облачно, али се време брзо поправило.

It was cloudy at the seaside this morning, but the weather improved quickly.

Extended-stem neuters reveal the stem: име → имену, време → времену, дете → детету.

У новом имену недостаје једно слово, а о старом имену нико више не говори.

One letter is missing from the new name, and no one talks about the old name anymore.

Feminine -а Nouns and Stem Alternations

Feminine -а nouns form locative in -и: соба → соби, улица → улици, школа → школи. Before -и, stems in к, г, х may undergo к → ц, г → з, х → с:

NominativeLocativePhrase
рекарецина реци
књигакњизио књизи
сврхасврсио сврси

У књизи сам пронашла занимљив податак о тврђави на реци.

In the book I found an interesting fact about the fortress on the river.

Not every proper name or newer loanword follows the alternation equally, so learn frequent forms individually. For common native nouns, the pattern is productive and important.

Feminine Consonant Nouns

Feminine nouns such as ствар, реч, љубав, радост, and ноћ generally have locative -и: о ствари, о речи, у љубави, у радости, о ноћи.

О тој ствари ћемо разговарати када сви стигну.

We will discuss that matter when everyone arrives.

О последњој речи у тексту дуго су расправљали.

They debated the last word in the text for a long time.

The adjective or determiner makes the feminine locative visible: тој ствари, последњој речи.

Plural Forms

Masculine and neuter nouns usually take -има; feminine -а nouns take -ама; feminine consonant nouns take -има. Modifiers use -им for every gender.

ClassNominative pluralLocative plural
masculineградовиу великим градовима
feminine in -аулицепо тихим улицама
neuterместана познатим местима
feminine consonantстварио важним стварима

По тихим улицама старог језгра готово да није било пролазника.

There were almost no pedestrians along the quiet streets of the old center.

О важним стварима не треба одлучивати на брзину.

Important matters should not be decided in haste.

Plural -има/-ама is also used by dative and instrumental. The governing preposition identifies the locative.

Phrase-Wide Agreement

Gender/numberNominative phraseLocative phrase
masculine singularовај нови музеју овом новом музеју
feminine singularова нова галеријау овој новој галерији
neuter singularово мало местона овом малом месту
pluralове старе кућео овим старим кућама

У овој новој галерији изложена су дела младих уметника.

Works by young artists are displayed in this new gallery.

Locative marking reaches demonstrative, adjective, and noun. English word order offers no substitute for this agreement.

The Locative Prepositions

The core prepositions are:

PrepositionMain locative useExample
уinside, atу продавници
наon, atна факултету
оabout, concerningо испиту
поacross, around; according to; afterпо граду, по плану
приat, attached to, under the conditions ofпри универзитету

По плану, нови центар ће радити при универзитету.

According to the plan, the new center will operate within the university.

При is limited and often (formal) or found in fixed phrases; learners should not use it as a general translation of English at. The topic and other uses page explains о, по, and при in context.

Dative–Locative Syncretism

Dative and locative forms are identical throughout the productive system:

Приближавамо се новом позоришту.

We are approaching the new theater. (dative governed by приближавати се)

Представа се игра у новом позоришту.

The play is being performed in the new theater. (locative after у)

The preposition у supplies locative in the second sentence. A bare dative complement appears in the first. Shape alone cannot distinguish them.

💡
The locative is never bare in contemporary standard Serbian. If there is no locative-governing preposition, an identical form is probably dative or instrumental.

Task 1: Build Locative Phrases

Change the nominative phrase and add the given preposition.

ова велика банка + у → у овој великој банци

this large bank + in → in this large bank

ово старо насеље + о → о овом старом насељу

this old neighborhood + about → about this old neighborhood

ови нови паркови + по → по овим новим парковима

these new parks + around → around these new parks

Task 2: Locative or Dative?

Identify the governor before naming the case.

Према нашем старом плану, полазимо у осам.

According to our old plan, we leave at eight. (dative after према)

По нашем старом плану, полазимо у осам.

According to our old plan, we leave at eight. (locative after по)

The phrase form is identical, but према governs dative and по governs locative.

Common Mistakes

Using locative without a preposition

❌ Живимо новом насељу близу реке.

Incorrect — locative requires a preposition.

✅ Живимо у новом насељу близу реке.

We live in a new neighborhood near the river.

Keeping feminine nouns in nominative

❌ Састанак је у велика сала.

Incorrect — у marks static location and requires locative.

✅ Састанак је у великој сали.

The meeting is in the large hall.

Declining only the noun

❌ Причали смо о занимљива књизи.

Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the locative noun.

✅ Причали смо о занимљивој књизи.

We talked about an interesting book.

Missing the feminine stem alternation

❌ Чекамо те у малој банки преко пута поште.

Incorrect — банка has locative банци in the standard pattern.

✅ Чекамо те у малој банци преко пута поште.

We are waiting for you in the small bank across from the post office.

Naming the case from the ending

❌ Израз „према новом закону“ је у локативу.

Incorrect analysis — према governs dative despite the identical form.

✅ Израз „према новом закону“ је у дативу, а „у новом закону“ у локативу.

The phrase ‘according to the new law’ is dative, while ‘in the new law’ is locative.

Key Takeaways

  • Locative uses the same forms as dative but always appears with a governing preposition.
  • Masculine/neuter singular commonly use -у, feminine singular -и, and plural -има/-ама.
  • Demonstratives and adjectives decline with the noun throughout the phrase.
  • У, на, о, по, and limited при license locative; identical forms after other governors may be dative or instrumental.
