Instrumental: Location, Time, and Predicate Uses

Beyond tools and companions, the Serbian instrumental marks three important domains: an established spatial configuration, certain recurring or extended times, and a role or classification assigned by a predicate. These uses are related by a broad idea of circumstance: where, when, or in what capacity an event holds.

English prepositions cannot select the case for you. Serbian под, над, пред, за, and међу use instrumental for static position but accusative for movement into that position; temporal instrumental often has no preposition; predicate instrumental depends on a restricted set of verbs.

Instrumental Forms in These Constructions

Gender/numberNominativeInstrumental phrase
masculine singularстари мостпод старим мостом
feminine singularвисока зградапред високом зградом
neuter singularвелико дрвопод великим дрветом
masculine pluralстари мостовипод старим мостовима
feminine pluralвисоке зградепред високим зградама
neuter pluralвелика дрветапод великим дрветима

Чамци су били везани под старим мостом током целе зиме.

The boats were tied up under the old bridge throughout the winter.

The adjective and noun decline together. In the plural, -има/-ама forms are also dative and locative; the spatial preposition and static meaning identify them as instrumental.

Static Position with под, над, пред, за, and међу

These prepositions create a spatial relation between two entities. Instrumental presents that relation as already established.

PrepositionStatic meaningModel
подunderпод креветом
надaboveнад градом
предin front ofпред улазом
заat/behindза столом
међуamong/betweenмеђу пријатељима

Испред куће није било места, па смо ауто оставили под великим орахом.

There was no room in front of the house, so we left the car under the large walnut tree.

Над тамним брдима скупљали су се олујни облаци.

Storm clouds were gathering over the dark hills.

Док смо чекали, деца су седела за округлим столом пред затвореним прозором.

While we waited, the children sat at a round table in front of a closed window.

Нашла је стару фотографију међу пожутелим писмима.

She found an old photograph among the yellowed letters.

English at or in front of does not directly encode instrumental. The Serbian preposition establishes the relation, and the case distinguishes position from destination.

💡
For these five prepositions, ask whether the relation already holds. If yes, use instrumental. If an action creates the relation, use accusative.

Position versus Destination

Changing only the case changes the spatial construal:

Пас лежи под кухињским столом.

The dog is lying under the kitchen table. (instrumental: established position)

Пас се завукао под кухињски сто.

The dog crawled under the kitchen table. (accusative: destination)

Гости већ седе за нашим столом.

The guests are already sitting at our table. (instrumental: position)

Гости су сели за наш сто чим су стигли.

The guests sat down at our table as soon as they arrived. (accusative: new configuration)

Motion alone is not the rule; creation of a new spatial relation is. Someone can move continuously под мостом while remaining under it. The full system is mapped on the two-case prepositions page.

Recurring Time: Days and Parts of the Day

A bare instrumental can mark a recurring time. Day names behave like nouns in the instrumental: понедељком, уторком, средом, суботом, недељом.

Средом радимо од куће, а петком се сви окупљамо у канцеларији.

On Wednesdays we work from home, and on Fridays we all gather at the office.

Недељом пијаца ради само до два.

On Sundays the market is open only until two.

This usually means a repeated schedule. A particular coming day uses у + accusative: у среду ‘on Wednesday.’

Средом тренирам увече, али ове недеље тренирам у четвртак.

I train on Wednesdays, but this week I am training on Thursday.

Some parts of the day use instrumental adverbially: јутром ‘in the morning,’ ноћу ‘at night,’ дању ‘during the day.’ They commonly describe a habitual or general frame.

Јутром је улица тиха, али ноћу из оближњих локала допире музика.

In the morning the street is quiet, but at night music carries from the nearby bars.

Extended Duration in the Plural

Plural instrumental forms can express an unbounded or emphatically long duration: сатима, данима, недељама, месецима, годинама.

Данима смо покушавали да добијемо службу за кориснике.

For days we tried to reach customer service.

Годинама је чувала све разгледнице у истој кутији.

For years she kept all the postcards in the same box.

This construction emphasizes duration rather than counting an exact period. Compare чекали смо два сата, a numeral phrase, with чекали смо сатима, an open-ended instrumental plural.

💡
Use temporal instrumental for habits or unbounded spans: петком, ноћу, сатима. Use date and numeral constructions for one identified Friday or exactly two hours.

Predicate Instrumental: Assigned Roles and Classifications

Certain verbs take an instrumental phrase that classifies or evaluates a person or thing. Frequent governors include сматрати ‘consider,’ назвати ‘call,’ прогласити ‘declare,’ and passive сматрати се ‘be considered.’

Комисија сматра овај предлог најбољим решењем.

The committee considers this proposal the best solution.

Новине су тај догађај назвале прекретницом у кампањи.

The newspapers called that event a turning point in the campaign.

Млади истраживач проглашен је добитником годишње награде.

The young researcher was declared the winner of the annual award. (formal)

The object or passive subject is assigned a role expressed by instrumental: предлог — решењем, догађај — прекретницом, истраживач — добитником. This use is common in evaluation and public announcements, with прогласити especially (formal).

Do Not Extend Predicate Instrumental to Every Copula

Contemporary neutral Serbian normally uses nominative after бити and постати:

Милан је архитекта, а његов син је постао лекар.

Milan is an architect, and his son became a doctor.

Constructions such as био је учитељем are archaic, literary, or characteristic of other BCMS standard traditions; they are not the productive neutral Serbian pattern. The instrumental after сматрати and назвати is a lexically licensed predicate complement, not a general ‘profession case.’

Syncretism in the Plural

Plural instrumental, dative, and locative share their endings. Compare:

Деца су се играла међу високим стаблима.

The children played among the tall trees. (instrumental after међу)

Причали смо о високим стаблима у старом парку.

We talked about the tall trees in the old park. (locative after о)

Приближили смо се високим стаблима на крају стазе.

We approached the tall trees at the end of the path. (dative after приближити се)

The identical phrase високим стаблима receives its case from the governor and relation, not its ending.

Task 1: Position or New Configuration?

Choose instrumental for the established position and accusative for the destination.

Кутија стоји пред плавим орманом. — Стави кутију пред плави орман.

The box is in front of the blue wardrobe. — Put the box in front of the blue wardrobe.

Мачка је међу гостима. — Мачка је утрчала међу госте.

The cat is among the guests. — The cat ran in among the guests.

Task 2: Interpret the Time Phrase

Decide whether the phrase expresses a habit, a general time frame, or an extended duration.

Суботом кувамо за целу недељу.

On Saturdays we cook for the whole week. (habit)

Ноћу температура нагло пада.

At night the temperature drops sharply. (general frame)

Сатима су расправљали о једној реченици.

They argued about a single sentence for hours. (extended duration)

Common Mistakes

Using locative after a static instrumental preposition

❌ Чекамо под старом мосту.

Incorrect — static под governs instrumental, not locative.

✅ Чекамо под старим мостом.

We are waiting under the old bridge.

Using instrumental for a destination

❌ Ставила је писмо међу старим књигама.

Incorrect — placing the letter into the group creates a new configuration, so међу requires the accusative.

✅ Ставила је писмо међу старе књиге.

She put the letter among the old books.

Declining only the noun

❌ Седели смо пред затворена вратима.

Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the instrumental plural noun.

✅ Седели смо пред затвореним вратима.

We sat in front of the closed door.

Using a recurring-time form for one date

❌ Видимо се средом ове недеље.

Incorrect for one Wednesday this week — средом expresses a recurring schedule.

✅ Видимо се у среду ове недеље.

See you on Wednesday this week.

Extending predicate instrumental after бити

❌ Њена ћерка је инжењерком у тој фирми.

Incorrect in contemporary neutral Serbian — the profession predicate is nominative.

✅ Њена ћерка је инжењерка у тој фирми.

Her daughter is an engineer at that company.

Key Takeaways

  • Под, над, пред, за, and међу take instrumental for an established spatial configuration and accusative for a destination.
  • Temporal instrumental marks recurring days, general frames such as ноћу, and unbounded spans such as сатима.
  • Predicate instrumental is licensed by verbs such as сматрати, назвати, and прогласити; neutral бити uses nominative.
  • Syncretic plural endings require analysis from the preposition, predicate, and meaning.
