Accusative for Motion and Direction

Serbian uses the accusative after several prepositions when a phrase presents a destination, endpoint, or path. The central contrast is идем у парк “I am going into/to the park” versus у парку сам “I am in the park”: the preposition stays the same, but accusative presents the endpoint of movement and locative presents a location.

This is not a mechanical rule that every verb of motion requires accusative. The case packages a particular spatial relation. Movement from somewhere, toward a person, or within an area may require a different construction. Unless marked otherwise, the forms on this page are neutral contemporary standard Serbian.

The destination pattern with у and на

Use у + accusative for movement into or toward many enclosed spaces, settlements, countries, and institutions. Use на + accusative for movement onto a surface and for many conventional destinations, events, and activities.

После посла идемо у ресторан на вечеру.

After work we're going to a restaurant for dinner.

Стави кључеве на полицу поред врата.

Put the keys on the shelf beside the door.

The destination phrase answers куда? “where to?” The corresponding location answers где? “where?” and normally uses locative with у or на:

Идемо у нову канцеларију.

We're going to the new office.

Радимо у новој канцеларији.

We work in the new office.

У суботу идемо на стадион.

On Saturday we're going to the stadium.

Утакмица је на стадиону поред реке.

The match is at the stadium beside the river.

The change канцеларију → канцеларији or стадион → стадиону does not merely replace English to with an ending. It tells the listener to construe the place as an endpoint or as the setting of the event.

💡
With у and на, ask about the spatial relation, not whether the verb describes movement. Endpoint куда? normally takes accusative; stable location где? normally takes locative.

Forms across gender and number

The preposition governs the entire noun phrase, so determiners and adjectives must also be accusative. This table compares nominative citation phrases with destination phrases:

Gender/numberNominative phraseAccusative destination
masculine singular, inanimateнови стану нови стан
feminine singularнова канцеларијау нову канцеларију
neuter singularново селоу ново село
masculine pluralнови градовиу нове градове
feminine pluralнове канцеларијеу нове канцеларије
neuter pluralнова селау нова села

Masculine inanimate and neuter singular nouns show nominative–accusative syncretism: стан and село do not visibly change. Feminine -а nouns show the clearest ending, -а → -у. In the plural, feminine and neuter noun forms may also look unchanged, but the modifiers and the governing preposition still identify the phrase.

Следећег месеца селимо се у већи стан.

Next month we're moving into a bigger apartment.

Аутобус улази у мала села само два пута дневно.

The bus enters the small villages only twice a day.

Choosing у or на is lexical as well as spatial

English to does not tell you whether Serbian needs у or на. Common patterns include у школу, у продавницу, у позориште, у Београд but на посао, на факултет, на састанак, на концерт, на море. Literal enclosure helps with many physical places, but conventional activity and institution phrases must be learned as collocations.

The у versus на guide develops these lexical choices beyond the basic destination contrast.

Ивана је отишла у школу, а њен брат на факултет.

Ivana went to school, and her brother went to university.

Do not infer that на means English “on.” Идем на концерт means “I am going to a concert,” not “onto a concert.” Conversely, a person as a destination is often expressed with код + genitive: идем код лекара “I am going to the doctor.” English to therefore has several Serbian case constructions.

Caused motion uses the same endpoint logic

The moving participant does not have to be the subject. Verbs such as ставити “put,” спустити “lower/set down,” окачити “hang,” and склонити “move away/put aside” can assign a destination to their object. The destination phrase still contrasts with the location that results.

Спусти торбу на празну столицу.

Set the bag down on the empty chair.

Торба је сада на празној столици.

The bag is now on the empty chair.

In the first sentence, торбу is the direct object and на празну столицу is an accusative endpoint phrase. In the second, торба becomes the nominative subject and на празној столици is locative. One clause can therefore contain two accusatives with different jobs; semantic structure and the preposition keep them apart.

Склони бицикл у гаражу да не покисне.

Put the bicycle in the garage so it doesn't get wet.

This is why “accusative equals direct object” is incomplete. Accusative also participates in prepositional path and endpoint constructions.

Other two-case prepositions

The prepositions под, над, пред, међу and spatial за commonly use accusative for movement into a position, but instrumental for being in that position:

Endpoint: accusativeLocation: instrumental
под стопод столом
пред кућупред кућом
међу гостемеђу гостима
за стоза столом

Мачка се завукла под кревет.

The cat crawled under the bed.

Мачка сада спава под креветом.

The cat is now sleeping under the bed.

Сели смо за сто поред прозора.

We sat down at the table beside the window.

Цело вече смо седели за столом и разговарали.

We sat at the table and talked all evening.

English often uses the same preposition in both members of each pair. Serbian marks the difference through case because the endpoint and the resulting location are different relations.

Path prepositions that always take accusative

Кроз “through,” низ “down/along,” and уз “up/along” govern accusative. They describe a path rather than a final container or surface, so they do not alternate with locative or instrumental in the way у, на, and под do.

Прошли смо кроз стари део града пре него што је почела киша.

We walked through the old part of town before it started raining.

Деца су потрчала низ стрме степенице.

The children ran down the steep stairs.

До видиковца смо се пењали уз уску стазу.

We climbed up the narrow path to the viewpoint.

Notice phrase-wide accusative agreement: стари део, стрме степенице, уску стазу. The noun ending alone may be syncretic, but the whole phrase makes the case visible.

A motion verb does not automatically mean accusative

Compare movement toward an endpoint with movement taking place inside an area:

Идемо у парк да се нађемо с пријатељима.

We're going to the park to meet our friends.

Шетамо по парку док чекамо почетак концерта.

We're walking around the park while waiting for the concert to begin.

The first phrase is у + accusative because the park is the destination. The second is по + locative because the walking unfolds within the park. Likewise, source uses из + genitive (враћамо се из парка), and approach can use dative (прилазимо улазу). Case follows the semantic relation selected by the verb and preposition, not the English word to and not motion in the abstract.

💡
Learn a place as a three-way set when useful: у ресторан “to the restaurant,” у ресторану “in the restaurant,” из ресторана “from the restaurant.” The case contrast then becomes a map of endpoint, location, and source.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: endpoint or location?

Explain why the two highlighted place phrases require different cases:

Оставила је бицикл пред зградом, па је ушла у зграду.

She left the bicycle in front of the building, then entered the building.

Answer: пред зградом is a stationary location and uses instrumental; у зграду is the endpoint of entering and uses accusative.

Task 2: make the whole phrase agree

Change the location у старој кући into a destination after селимо се:

Селимо се у стару кућу близу језера.

We're moving into an old house near the lake.

Answer: feminine accusative changes both words: стара кућа → стару кућу.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping the locative after a destination verb.

❌ Сутра идемо у музеју.

Incorrect — the museum is the destination, so у requires accusative музеј.

✅ Сутра идемо у музеј.

Tomorrow we're going to the museum.

2. Using accusative for a stable location.

❌ Чекамо те на станицу.

Incorrect — the waiting happens at the station, so на requires locative станици.

✅ Чекамо те на станици.

We're waiting for you at the station.

3. Declining the noun but not its modifier.

❌ Преселили су се у нова кућу.

Incorrect — the adjective and noun must both be feminine accusative.

✅ Преселили су се у нову кућу.

They moved into a new house.

4. Assuming every English destination uses accusative.

❌ После ручка идем у лекара.

Incorrect in neutral standard Serbian — a visit to a person or professional normally uses код + genitive.

✅ После ручка идем код лекара.

After lunch I'm going to the doctor.

Key Takeaways

Accusative after у and на presents a destination; locative presents a location. Под, над, пред, међу, and spatial за contrast accusative endpoints with instrumental locations, while кроз, низ, and уз consistently govern accusative paths. The whole noun phrase must show the governed case, even when the noun ending itself is identical to nominative. Most importantly, movement alone does not choose a case—the spatial relation does.
