Several Serbian spatial prepositions choose between two cases. The change of case changes the relationship: у and на take accusative for a destination but locative for an existing location; под, над, пред, за, међу take accusative for movement into a configuration but instrumental for an existing configuration.
The familiar label ‘motion versus rest’ is useful but incomplete. A sentence can contain vigorous motion and still use a location case: Трчим у парку means that the running happens inside the park. The real question is whether the noun phrase names a goal/configuration being entered or the place/configuration in which the event occurs.
The Core Map
| Preposition | Goal/change of configuration | Existing location/configuration |
|---|---|---|
| у | accusative: у собу ‘into the room’ | locative: у соби ‘in the room’ |
| на | accusative: на сто ‘onto the table’ | locative: на столу ‘on the table’ |
| под | accusative: под сто ‘to under the table’ | instrumental: под столом ‘under the table’ |
| над | accusative: над главу ‘to above the head’ | instrumental: над главом ‘above the head’ |
| пред | accusative: пред врата ‘to in front of the door’ | instrumental: пред вратима ‘in front of the door’ |
| за | accusative: за сто ‘to the table’ | instrumental: за столом ‘at the table’ |
| међу | accusative: међу људе ‘into the crowd’ | instrumental: међу људима ‘among the people’ |
The standard Cyrillic form међу corresponds to Latin među. Treat it as one preposition, not as an English-style sequence between + object whose case can be guessed independently.
у and на: Accusative Goal, Locative Place
With у, accusative marks entry into a bounded place or movement to an institution or event construed with у. Locative presents the entity as already inside or at that place.
После ручка идемо у нову библиотеку.
After lunch we are going to the new library. (accusative destination)
После ручка учимо у новој библиотеци.
After lunch we are studying in the new library. (locative location)
With на, accusative marks movement onto a surface or to places and activities conventionally used with на; locative marks position there.
Ставила је чисте чаше на горњу полицу.
She put the clean glasses onto the top shelf. (accusative goal)
Чисте чаше стоје на горњој полици.
The clean glasses are on the top shelf. (locative position)
The choice between у and на is lexical as well as spatial: у школу, but на факултет; у биоскоп, but на концерт. Once the preposition is chosen, the goal/location contrast selects its case. The у versus на guide covers that lexical choice separately.
Motion Inside a Place Is Still Location
Do not let a motion verb automatically trigger accusative. If movement unfolds within a place and does not cross into it as a goal, use the location case.
Деца трче у парку, а родитељи седе на клупи.
The children are running in the park, while the parents are sitting on a bench.
Када је почела киша, деца су потрчала у оближњи кафић.
When it started raining, the children ran into a nearby café.
The first sentence contains motion but no destination: the park is the setting, so у парку is locative. In the second, the café is the endpoint entered, so у кафић is accusative.
под: Under versus To Under
Под + instrumental locates something below another object. Под + accusative marks movement into that lower position.
Мачка спава под старим столом.
The cat is sleeping under the old table. (instrumental position)
Када су дошли гости, мачка се сакрила под стари сто.
When the guests arrived, the cat hid under the old table. (accusative goal)
Notice phrase-wide marking: старим столом versus стари сто. For an inanimate masculine noun, accusative looks like nominative; the preposition and goal meaning show that it is accusative.
над and пред: Above/In Front versus Movement There
Над + instrumental means that something is positioned above; accusative marks movement to a position above. Пред creates the same contrast for ‘in front of.’
Лампа виси над трпезаријским столом.
The lamp hangs above the dining table. (instrumental position)
Подигао је руке над главу чим је судија означио крај меча.
He raised his hands above his head as soon as the referee signaled the end of the match. (accusative goal configuration)
Такси нас је оставио пред главним улазом.
The taxi dropped us off in front of the main entrance. (instrumental location)
Демонстранти су изашли пред зграду општине.
The protesters came out in front of the municipal building. (accusative destination)
With пред, many everyday verbs naturally describe either arrival (стати пред врата) or position (стајати пред вратима). Aspect and case reinforce the contrast, but case still follows the spatial construal.
за: To the Working Position versus At It
In the spatial pair, за + accusative marks movement into a position at/behind something, while за + instrumental describes that established position. The high-frequency table construction is especially useful.
Сели смо за слободан сто поред прозора.
We sat down at a free table by the window. (accusative goal)
Седели смо за слободним столом скоро два сата.
We sat at a free table for almost two hours. (instrumental position)
За also has many nonspatial meanings with accusative: поклон за сестру ‘a gift for my sister,’ за два дана ‘in two days,’ гласати за предлог ‘vote for the proposal.’ Those are not ‘motion’ uses and do not alternate with instrumental under a rest rule. The two-case contrast applies when за creates a spatial configuration.
међу: Into a Group versus Among Its Members
Међу + accusative presents entry into a group or distributed space. Међу + instrumental locates someone or something within it.
Чим је стигао, новинар је ушао међу окупљене грађане.
As soon as he arrived, the journalist went into the crowd of assembled citizens. (accusative entry)
Новинар је стајао међу окупљеним грађанима и бележио њихове изјаве.
The journalist stood among the assembled citizens and recorded their statements. (instrumental position)
The plural endings make the case contrast visible: accusative окупљене грађане, instrumental окупљеним грађанима.
Declension Across the Whole Phrase
Use the case contrast on every modifier. These examples collect the most transparent feminine and plural patterns:
| Base phrase | Goal | Location |
|---|---|---|
| нова соба | у нову собу (acc.) | у новој соби (loc.) |
| велика полица | на велику полицу (acc.) | на великој полици (loc.) |
| стари сто | под стари сто (acc.) | под старим столом (instr.) |
| окупљени људи | међу окупљене људе (acc.) | међу окупљеним људима (instr.) |
Masculine inanimate accusative стари сто looks nominative, while locative на старом столу and instrumental под старим столом look different. Do not choose the case by the visibility of its ending.
Similar Verbs, Different Configurations
The verb's lexical meaning often makes one case more likely, but the phrase still expresses the chosen relation:
Стави торбу под седиште, па је остави под седиштем до краја путовања.
Put the bag under the seat, then leave it under the seat until the end of the journey.
The first под седиште is the result location being created, hence accusative. The second под седиштем is the maintained location, hence instrumental.
Task 1: Goal or Setting?
Choose the correct form, then say whether the place is an endpoint or the setting of the activity.
После предавања студенти су ушли у тиху читаоницу.
After the lecture, the students entered the quiet reading room. (endpoint: accusative)
Студенти су цело поподне радили у тихој читаоници.
The students worked in the quiet reading room all afternoon. (setting: locative)
Пас је потрчао међу висока стабла, а затим се изгубио међу њима.
The dog ran in among the tall trees and then disappeared among them. (accusative entry; instrumental position)
Task 2: Transform the Configuration
Turn each location into a destination by changing the verb if necessary and converting the entire phrase.
Бицикл је пред старом гаражом. — Остави бицикл пред стару гаражу.
The bicycle is in front of the old garage. — Leave the bicycle in front of the old garage.
Деца седе за великим столом. — Деца су села за велики сто.
The children are sitting at the large table. — The children sat down at the large table.
Track both adjective and noun: старом гаражом → стару гаражу, великим столом → велики сто.
Common Mistakes
Using accusative for any sentence with movement
❌ Сат времена смо трчали у парк.
Incorrect for activity within the park — accusative makes the park a destination.
✅ Сат времена смо трчали у парку.
We ran in the park for an hour.
Using a location case after a placement verb
❌ Стави кључеве на малој полици.
Incorrect — the shelf is the goal of placement, so на requires accusative.
✅ Стави кључеве на малу полицу.
Put the keys on the small shelf.
Treating под like у and using locative
❌ Пас спава под столу.
Incorrect — static под governs instrumental, not locative.
✅ Пас спава под столом.
The dog is sleeping under the table.
Declining only the noun
❌ Ушли смо у нова зграду кроз споредни улаз.
Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the feminine accusative noun.
✅ Ушли смо у нову зграду кроз споредни улаз.
We entered the new building through a side entrance.
Applying the spatial alternation to nonspatial за
❌ Купио сам поклон за сестром.
Incorrect — за meaning ‘for’ governs accusative; no static instrumental contrast applies.
✅ Купио сам поклон за сестру.
I bought a gift for my sister.
Key Takeaways
- У/на + accusative mark a destination; у/на + locative mark the setting of an event.
- Под, над, пред, за, међу + accusative mark entry into a spatial configuration; instrumental marks an existing configuration.
- Movement inside a place still uses the location case: трчати у парку, not destination у парк.
- Nonspatial meanings such as за сестру do not participate in the spatial case alternation.
The two-case system becomes predictable once you stop asking whether there is motion in the sentence and ask whether the phrase names a newly reached configuration or an already established one.
