Choosing a Serbian case is not mainly an exercise in selecting an ending. It is a decision about the noun phrase's job in a construction. A preposition may govern it, a verb or adjective may require it, or its role in the clause may determine it. Once that job is clear, gender, number, and declension class supply the form.
English speakers often begin with an English preposition and search for its Serbian equivalent. That reverses the useful order. Start with the Serbian governor and meaning, identify the case, and only then decline every word in the phrase.
The Workflow at a Glance
Use these questions in order:
- Is there a preposition? If yes, learn which case that Serbian preposition governs in this meaning.
- Does a verb, adjective, or noun impose a case? For example, помоћи selects dative and сећати се selects genitive.
- If neither decides it, what is the phrase's clause role? Subject, direct object, recipient, means, possession, address, and so on.
- Is a numeral or quantity changing the noun form? Numerals can override the ordinary case pattern.
- What are the noun's gender, number, animacy, and stem class? These choose the actual ending.
- Have all modifiers agreed? Determiners, adjectives, and participles must carry the same case, gender, and number.
This hierarchy prevents two frequent errors: choosing by English word order and guessing from a noun's final letter.
A Seven-Case Diagnostic Table
The following table gives a working question, central role, and model phrase. The questions are memory aids, not rules: the governor still has priority.
| Case | Useful diagnostic | Core roles | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| nominative | who/what is presented? | subject; naming; predicate noun | нови студент долази |
| genitive | from/of/without how much? | source, possession, quantity, lexical government | без новог студента |
| dative | to/for whom? | recipient, experiencer, goal, lexical government | новом студенту |
| accusative | whom/what affected; where to? | direct object, goal after some prepositions, duration | видим новог студента |
| vocative | whom am I addressing? | direct address | Никола! |
| instrumental | using/with/by what? | means, companion, manner, path, static position after some prepositions | с новим студентом |
| locative | where/about what? | location and topic after a preposition | о новом студенту |
Step 1: Let a Fixed Preposition Decide
Many Serbian prepositions govern one case in all ordinary uses. без, из, од, после take genitive; кроз and за in many meanings take accusative; према takes dative; о takes locative; с/са meaning ‘together with’ takes instrumental.
После важног састанка разговарали смо о новом пројекту са главном уредницом.
After the important meeting, we discussed the new project with the editor-in-chief.
This one sentence contains genitive after после, locative after о, and instrumental after accompaniment са. English translations do not determine those endings; the Serbian prepositions do.
Two-case prepositions require one extra question. With у/на, accusative normally marks a destination and locative a location. With под, над, пред, за, међу, accusative marks entry into a spatial configuration and instrumental marks an existing configuration.
Улазимо у нову зграду, а састанак је у великој сали на другом спрату.
We are entering the new building, and the meeting is in the large hall on the second floor.
The moving verb alone is not decisive. Трчимо у парку has locative because the running remains inside the park; трчимо у парк has accusative because the park is the goal. See the complete contrast on the two-case prepositions page.
Step 2: Check Lexical Government
Some predicates select a case that English gives no reason to expect. Learn the noun phrase together with the verb or adjective:
| Governor | Required case | Model |
|---|---|---|
| помоћи ‘help’ | dative | помоћи новој колегиници |
| веровати ‘believe/trust’ | dative | веровати искусном лекару |
| сећати се ‘remember’ | genitive | сећати се првог дана |
| бојати се ‘fear’ | genitive | бојати се великих промена |
| управљати ‘operate/manage’ | instrumental | управљати сложеним системом |
| сличан ‘similar’ | dative | сличан старом моделу |
Помогли смо новој колегиници да управља сложеним системом.
We helped the new colleague operate the complex system.
Here помоћи requires dative новој колегиници, while управљати requires instrumental сложеним системом. Treating both English verbs as direct-transitive would produce two wrong accusatives.
Step 3: Assign the Clause Role
When no preposition or lexical governor decides, identify what the noun phrase does.
Нова колегиница је јуче послала директору детаљан извештај.
The new colleague sent the director a detailed report yesterday.
The actor нова колегиница is nominative. The transferred item детаљан извештај is accusative. The recipient директору is dative. Serbian can reorder them—Директору је нова колегиница послала извештај—without changing their roles because the case forms preserve the relations.
For a bare means use instrumental; for possession or quantity use genitive; for direct address use vocative:
Милице, пошаљи ми уговор електронском поштом.
Milica, send me the contract by email.
Милице is vocative, ми dative recipient, уговор accusative inanimate object, and електронском поштом instrumental means.
Step 4: Apply Animacy, Number, and Declension
The semantic decision tells you which case; morphology tells you what it looks like. Masculine singular accusative is the most important animacy split:
Чекам новог директора испред зграде.
I am waiting for the new director outside the building. (animate accusative = genitive in form)
Чекам нови аутобус испред зграде.
I am waiting for the new bus outside the building. (inanimate accusative = nominative in form)
Numerals can impose their own phrase shape. Два нова студента uses the paucal form; пет нових студената uses genitive plural. If that numeral phrase enters a larger sentence, do not simply attach the ending expected on one noun. The case after numbers page treats that interaction in detail.
Step 5: Make the Whole Phrase Agree
Case belongs to the noun phrase. A determiner or adjective left in nominative makes the structure visibly inconsistent.
| Base phrase | Genitive | Dative | Instrumental |
|---|---|---|---|
| ова нова школа | ове нове школе | овој новој школи | овом новом школом |
| овај нови студент | овог новог студента | овом новом студенту | овим новим студентом |
| ово мало место | овог малог места | овом малом месту | овим малим местом |
Пришли смо овој новој школи споредним путем.
We approached this new school by a side road.
The dative phrase овој новој школи and instrumental phrase споредним путем each show agreement internally. Their different roles are licensed by прићи and by the path meaning respectively.
Step 6: Resolve Syncretism from Context
Several cases share forms. Masculine inanimate nominative and accusative singular coincide; masculine animate accusative and genitive coincide; dative and locative are largely identical; dative, instrumental, and locative plural coincide.
Пишем новој колегиници.
I am writing to the new colleague. (dative recipient)
Пишем о новој колегиници.
I am writing about the new colleague. (locative topic)
The ending -ој/-и cannot settle the analysis. The absence or presence of о, together with the meaning, does. Case is a syntactic relation even when morphology neutralizes the distinction.
Minimal Pairs: Case Changes the Role
Чекам Марка испред биоскопа.
I am waiting for Marko outside the cinema. (accusative object)
Честитам Марку на новом послу.
I congratulate Marko on his new job. (dative selected by честитати)
Ставила је шољу на сто.
She put the cup onto the table. (accusative goal)
Шоља је на столу.
The cup is on the table. (locative position)
The noun's referent may remain the same, but its relation to the event changes. That is why memorizing translations such as ‘Marko = Марко’ or ‘table = сто’ is insufficient; usable vocabulary includes case forms and government.
Task 1: Run the Six Questions
For each sentence, identify the governor, semantic role, case, and the morphology that reveals it.
Без старе карте нисмо могли да пронађемо пут до села.
Without the old map, we could not find the road to the village. (без → genitive; до → genitive)
Младићу смо показали краћи пут кроз шуму.
We showed the young man a shorter path through the forest. (recipient dative; direct-object accusative; кроз + accusative)
Then reorder the second sentence as Краћи пут кроз шуму показали смо младићу. The information focus changes, but the cases and participant roles do not.
Task 2: Repair the Entire Phrase
Begin with ова нова библиотека. Put it after each governor and explain the choice.
Нема ове нове библиотеке на старој мапи.
This new library is not on the old map. (genitive after нема)
Прилазимо овој новој библиотеци са источне стране.
We are approaching this new library from the east side. (dative after прилазити)
Разговарамо о овој новој библиотеци.
We are talking about this new library. (locative after о)
The repeated ов- + нов- + библиотек- makes phrase-wide agreement visible. Do not change only the final noun.
Common Mistakes
Choosing from the English preposition
❌ Чекам за мог брата испред станице.
Incorrect transfer from English ‘wait for’ — чекати takes a direct accusative object without за.
✅ Чекам мог брата испред станице.
I am waiting for my brother outside the station.
Using accusative after every verb
❌ Помогла је нову колегиницу око извештаја.
Incorrect — помоћи governs the dative.
✅ Помогла је новој колегиници око извештаја.
She helped the new colleague with the report.
Letting motion automatically trigger accusative
❌ Трчимо у парк већ пола сата.
Incorrect for running within the park — accusative makes the park the destination.
✅ Трчимо у парку већ пола сата.
We have been running in the park for half an hour.
Declining only the noun
❌ Разговарам са нова колегиницом.
Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the instrumental noun.
✅ Разговарам са новом колегиницом.
I am talking with the new colleague.
Reading a syncretic ending as one fixed case
❌ Израз „О добрим пријатељима“ је у дативу зато што се завршава на -има.
Incorrect analysis — о governs the locative.
✅ „Помажем добрим пријатељима“ садржи датив, а „о добрим пријатељима“ локатив.
Помажем добрим пријатељима contains dative, while о добрим пријатељима contains locative.
Key Takeaways
- Decide in this order: preposition, lexical governor, clause role, numeral pattern, noun morphology, phrase-wide agreement.
- Serbian cases encode relations; English word order and prepositions are clues, not rules.
- Motion does not by itself require accusative, and identical endings do not prove identical cases.
- Choose the case first, then apply gender, number, animacy, declension class, and agreement to obtain the form.
The reliable workflow always proceeds from construction to role to form. Endings confirm the decision; they do not replace it.
