Serbian numbers do more than count: they determine the form of the following noun phrase. Један behaves like an agreeing adjective, два/две, три, четири select a special count pattern traditionally associated with the genitive singular, and пет and higher numbers select genitive plural.
This is why the English phrase “new student(s)” appears as нови студент, нова студента, or нових студената depending on the number. The number governs the phrase internally; its role in the larger sentence is a separate layer.
The Three Core Patterns
| Number | Masculine person | Feminine noun | Neuter noun | Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | један нови студент | једна нова порука | једно ново питање | full singular agreement |
| 2 | два нова студента | две нове поруке | два нова питања | paucal/count form |
| 3–4 | три/четири нова студента | три/четири нове поруке | три/четири нова питања | paucal/count form |
| 5+ | пет нових студената | пет нових порука | пет нових питања | genitive plural |
With један, gender and case are visible throughout the phrase. Its plural forms једни, једне, једна have special meanings such as “one set/pair” or “some,” not ordinary counting of one item.
Једна нова колегиница почиње да ради у понедељак.
One new colleague is starting work on Monday.
Позвао сам једног новог колегу на ручак.
I invited one new colleague to lunch.
The second sentence shows that the larger clause still matters: animate masculine један нови колега becomes accusative једног новог колегу as the object of позвати.
Two to Four: A Count Phrase of Its Own
After два with masculine and neuter nouns, and две with feminine nouns, the noun has a genitive-singular-looking form. Modifiers use special plural count forms: два добра пријатеља, две добре вести, два слободна места. The same structure follows три and четири.
Два искусна мајстора су стигла раније него што смо очекивали.
Two experienced tradesmen arrived earlier than we expected.
На столу су остале три важне поруке за тебе.
Three important messages were left on the table for you.
У сали су остала четири слободна места у првом реду.
Four seats remained free in the front row.
Past-participle agreement reveals another effect. With masculine два/три/четири, the participle conventionally has neuter plural -а: два мајстора су стигла. A feminine phrase has feminine plural agreement: две колегинице су стигле. Neuter nouns also take neuter plural: два места су остала. This is not agreement with the nearest ending by sound; it is the grammatical pattern of the quantified phrase.
Five and Higher: Genitive Plural
From пет onward, the noun and its modifiers are genitive plural. Нула uses the same noun form: нула бодова. The numeral itself is normally indeclinable. With count nouns, quantifiers such as много “many,” мало “few,” неколико “several,” and колико “how many” also take genitive plural. With a mass noun, много, мало, and колико instead take genitive singular: много воде, мало времена, колико новца.
Пет нових студената је предало рад пре рока.
Five new students submitted the paper before the deadline.
Неколико великих прозора гледа на унутрашње двориште.
Several large windows face the inner courtyard.
Колико празних флаша треба да однесемо на рециклажу?
How many empty bottles do we need to take for recycling?
In the neutral standard pattern, a quantified subject with пет+ often takes a neuter singular predicate: пет студената је предало, literally a count treated as one quantified group. Semantic plural agreement also occurs in usage, especially with people, but learners need the neuter singular pattern as the dependable formal and edited baseline. With a simple present-tense predicate whose forms do not mark gender, only number is visible: неколико прозора гледа, not гледају, in the neutral quantified construction.
Compound Numbers: Look at the Ending, Except 11–14
For compound cardinal numbers, the final number normally decides the pattern, but numbers ending in 11, 12, 13, 14 belong to the 5+ group.
| Number | Phrase | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | двадесет један студент | ends in 1, but not 11 |
| 22 | двадесет два студента | ends in 2, but not 12 |
| 25 | двадесет пет студената | ends in 5 |
| 111 | сто једанаест студената | ends in 11 |
| 122 | сто двадесет два студента | ends in 2, not 12 |
За радионицу су се пријавила двадесет два учесника.
Twenty-two participants registered for the workshop.
До поднева се пријавило сто дванаест учесника.
By noon, 112 participants had registered.
The contrast is grammatical, not mathematical: 22 ends in the two-to-four pattern, while 112 ends in the 11–14 block.
When a Preposition Governs the Whole Phrase
The outside construction and the numeral's internal government coexist. With један, ordinary case inflection is visible across the phrase. With cardinal 2–4, fully declined forms exist—genitive двају/двеју, dative–instrumental–locative двама/двема, трију/трима, and четирију/четирима—but they are (formal) or uncommon in everyday speech. Modern everyday Serbian usually leaves the cardinal count phrase unchanged after a preposition.
| Type | Base phrase | After са “with” | Register note |
|---|---|---|---|
| one | један нови колега | с једним новим колегом | ordinary full declension |
| two, everyday | два нова колеге | са два нова колеге | ordinary modern speech |
| two, declined | два нова колеге | с двама новим колегама | (formal), rare in conversation |
| five | пет нових колега | са пет нових колега | numeral phrase remains internally genitive plural |
Разговарала сам са два нова клијента о роковима.
I spoke with two new clients about the deadlines.
Извештај је заснован на пет независних извора.
The report is based on five independent sources.
Са and на still contribute instrumental and locative meaning to the construction, but the ordinary undeclined cardinal phrase retains два нова клијента or genitive plural пет независних извора internally. This is precisely why case cannot be reduced to “replace an English preposition with an ending.” For male persons, collective двојица gives the natural declined alternative с двојицом нових колега; its fuller system belongs on Collective and Paired Numerals.
Practice Task 1: Build the Count Phrase
Choose the correct form of “new message” after each number.
Стигла је двадесет једна нова порука.
Twenty-one new messages arrived. Answer: the number ends in 1, so use singular agreement.
Стигле су двадесет три нове поруке.
Twenty-three new messages arrived. Answer: the number ends in 3, so use the feminine two-to-four pattern.
Стигло је двадесет осам нових порука.
Twenty-eight new messages arrived. Answer: 5+ requires genitive plural and normally neuter singular predicate agreement.
Practice Task 2: Add a Preposition
Rebuild the phrase after the given preposition in neutral everyday Serbian.
Путујем с једном малом торбом и без додатног кофера.
I'm traveling with one small bag and without an additional suitcase. Answer: једна мала торба declines fully after с.
Путујем са три мала кофера у пртљажнику.
I'm traveling with three small suitcases in the trunk. Answer: the everyday cardinal phrase retains the two-to-four count form.
Common Mistakes
1. Using an ordinary plural after two to four.
❌ У чекаоници седе три уморни путници.
Incorrect — after три, use the masculine count phrase три уморна путника.
✅ У чекаоници седе три уморна путника.
Three tired passengers are sitting in the waiting room.
2. Using a singular-looking noun after five or more.
❌ Наручили смо шест велика сендвича за екипу.
Incorrect — шест requires genitive plural: шест великих сендвича.
✅ Наручили смо шест великих сендвича за екипу.
We ordered six large sandwiches for the team.
3. Forgetting the 11–14 exception.
❌ На конкурс су стигле сто четрнаест пријаве.
Incorrect — 114 ends in fourteen, so the noun must be genitive plural: пријава.
✅ На конкурс је стигло сто четрнаест пријава.
One hundred fourteen applications were submitted to the competition.
4. Leaving agreement singular with један when case changes.
❌ Сарађујемо са један поуздан партнер већ годинама.
Incorrect — after са, the numeral, adjective, and noun must all be instrumental: једним поузданим партнером.
✅ Сарађујемо с једним поузданим партнером већ годинама.
We have been working with one reliable partner for years.
Key Takeaways
- Један agrees and declines with its singular noun phrase.
- Два/две, три, четири select the paucal/count pattern; gender remains visible in modifiers and predicate agreement.
- Пет+, нула, and quantifiers with count nouns such as много, мало, неколико select genitive plural; mass nouns after quantity words are normally genitive singular.
- In compound numbers, the ending controls the form except that 11–14 always take the 5+ pattern.
- A preposition can govern the relation of the whole quantified phrase even when ordinary modern Serbian leaves the internal cardinal construction unchanged.
