The numerals два/две, три, четири, and оба/обе have case forms, but contemporary Serbian does not use them with equal frequency in every setting. Declined forms remain fully standard and useful—especially in careful writing—while ordinary speech often leaves the numeral unchanged and lets the original counted phrase survive after a preposition. The difficult part is that these two patterns must not be blended halfway.
The core paradigms
The nominative and accusative are identical for these numerals. Genitive has a special form, and dative, instrumental, and locative share another form. Два is used with masculine and neuter nouns; две with feminine nouns. Оба/обе “both” follows the same gender division.
| Case | два (m./n.) | две (f.) | три | четири |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative / accusative | два | две | три | четири |
| Genitive | двају | двеју | трију | четирију |
| Dative / instrumental / locative | двама | двема | трима | четирима |
| Case | оба (m./n.) | обе (f.) |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative / accusative | оба | обе |
| Genitive | обају | обеју |
| Dative / instrumental / locative | обама | обема |
There is no vocative numeral paradigm, and these forms do not create a separate set for each gender. The masculine/neuter versus feminine contrast occurs only with два/две and оба/обе.
Између двеју понуда постоји велика разлика у цени.
There is a large difference in price between the two offers.
О обема кандидаткињама одбор је расправљао више од сат времена.
The committee discussed both female candidates for more than an hour.
Са трима искусним мајсторима посао је завршен до поднева.
With three experienced tradespeople, the job was finished by noon.
The declined pattern makes the entire phrase show the surrounding case. Thus са трима искусним мајсторима has instrumental plural on both adjective and noun. This differs sharply from nominative три искусна мајстора, where the numeral creates the special 2–4 construction.
Declined and undeclined constructions
In contemporary informal speech, the undeclined option is extremely common:
Стигла сам са две велике торбе и једним ранцем.
I arrived with two large bags and one backpack.
Here са normally governs the instrumental, but две велике торбе retains the same form it has as a basic 2–4 phrase. In more careful or formal style, the fully declined version is:
Стигла сам са двема великим торбама и једним ранцем.
I arrived with two large bags and one backpack.
Both sentences are standard Serbian. The first is unmarked in much everyday usage; the second makes the case relation explicit and is more likely in edited prose. The choice affects the whole counted phrase:
| Strategy | Example | Internal form |
|---|---|---|
| undeclined numeral phrase | са два добра лекара | 2–4 phrase remains unchanged |
| fully declined phrase | са двама добрим лекарима | numeral, adjective, and noun show instrumental |
The fully declined forms can be especially valuable when the phrase is distant from its preposition or when formal prose needs a clear grammatical relation.
Захваљујући двама пажљивим сведоцима, полиција је брзо проверила алиби.
Thanks to two attentive witnesses, the police quickly verified the alibi.
Од четирију предложених решења, ниједно није било довољно јефтино.
Of the four proposed solutions, none was inexpensive enough.
Од четири предложена решења is also widespread and neutral in less formal contexts. The existence of an undeclined alternative does not make четирију archaic; it makes it stylistically marked as careful or formal.
Why the noun changes too
In the basic 2–4 construction, the numeral governs a form historically related to the genitive singular: два нова прозора, три добре идеје. Once the numeral itself is declined, that government is replaced by ordinary plural case agreement:
Два нова прозора гледају на двориште.
Two new windows face the courtyard.
Пришли смо двама новим прозорима да проверимо оквире.
We approached the two new windows to inspect the frames.
The second sentence has dative plural новим прозорима, not нова прозора. This interaction is why numeral declension cannot be learned as a one-word substitution. Review the base contrast on The Paucal Pattern with Two to Four.
Један and numerals above four
Један declines like a pronominal adjective and agrees in gender and number: једног, једној, једним. It remains declinable when it is the final component of a compound numeral.
Разговарали смо са двадесет једним станаром пре гласања.
We spoke with twenty-one residents before the vote.
Simple cardinals from five upward are normally indeclinable: од пет кандидата, са десет кандидата, о сто кандидата. The noun remains genitive plural because the unchanged numeral continues to govern it.
Извештај је заснован на разговорима са двадесет пет корисника.
The report is based on interviews with twenty-five users.
Do not force an instrumental ending onto пет or десет. The outer preposition governs the numeral phrase as a unit, while the numeral keeps its genitive plural complement.
Compound numerals ending in two to four
Compound numerals are generally resistant to declension in contemporary usage. Са двадесет три учесника is natural and common. In careful formal prose, however, the final declinable component may carry the case, and the noun phrase then follows it in the plural case: са двадесет трима учесницима.
Анкета је спроведена међу тридесет две запослене особе.
The survey was conducted among thirty-two employees.
Анкета је спроведена међу тридесет двема запосленим особама.
The survey was conducted among thirty-two employees.
The first is the usual undeclined construction; the second is the fully declined formal alternative. In compounds, only the final element controls the noun form: двадесет два дана, двадесет пет дана, сто једна страница. A number ending in 11–14 belongs to the 5+ pattern even if its last digit seems to suggest otherwise: сто дванаест дана.
Prices, ages, and dates
Price and age expressions strongly favor unchanged numerals because they behave as measurements: са двадесет евра, у тридесет две године, дете од три године. A declined form is possible only where the numeral belongs to a genuinely case-marked noun phrase and the style supports it.
Са двадесет евра у џепу нисам могао да платим цео рачун.
With twenty euros in my pocket, I could not pay the entire bill.
Calendar dates are built from ordinals, not declining cardinals: другог маја, двадесет трећег октобра. Do not apply the paradigms on this page to the day of the month; see Ordinal Numbers.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Build both registers
Express “with two reliable colleagues,” “about three proposals,” and “between both buildings” twice: first with the common undeclined construction, then with a fully declined numeral phrase where the case permits it.
Task 2: Diagnose the compound
Put 21 станар, 23 учесник, and 25 корисник after са. For each, decide whether the final numeral can decline and explain the resulting noun form.
Common Mistakes
The most common errors come from remembering the numeral ending but forgetting that the rest of the phrase must change with it.
❌ Дошао је са двама добра пријатеља.
Incorrect — the declined instrumental двама requires instrumental plural on the adjective and noun too.
✅ Дошао је са двама добрим пријатељима.
He came with two good friends.
❌ Разговарали смо о обе предлозима.
Incorrect — обе is feminine, while предлог is masculine; the fully declined locative form is обама предлозима.
✅ Разговарали смо о обама предлозима.
We discussed both proposals.
❌ Изабрали смо једну од двеју добре понуде.
Incorrect — after declined двеју, the adjective and noun must both be genitive plural: добрих понуда.
✅ Изабрали смо једну од двеју добрих понуда.
We chose one of the two good offers.
❌ Са петима гостима смо кренули у обилазак.
Incorrect — the cardinal пет does not take an instrumental ending; it remains пет and governs genitive plural.
✅ Са пет гостију смо кренули у обилазак.
We set off on the tour with five guests.
❌ Помогао је трима млада волонтера.
Incorrect — declined трима requires dative plural agreement throughout the phrase.
✅ Помогао је трима младим волонтерима.
He helped three young volunteers.
Key Takeaways
- Два/две, три, четири, and оба/обе have real genitive and dative/instrumental/locative forms.
- Everyday Serbian often keeps the full numeral phrase undeclined; careful prose uses declined alternatives more readily.
- A declined numeral requires plural case marking on its modifiers and noun.
- Compounds ending in један decline that final adjective-like element; compounds ending in 5+ remain indeclinable.
