Ordinal Numbers

Cardinal numbers answer “how many?”; ordinal numbers answer “which one in order?” Serbian ordinals behave like definite adjectives: they agree with their noun in gender, number, case, and masculine animacy. When an ordinal is written with Arabic digits, a period after the number performs the work that English spelling gives to -st, -nd, -rd, or -th.

The first ordinals

NumberMasculineFeminineNeuter
1stпрвипрвапрво
2ndдругидругадруго
3rdтрећитрећатреће
4thчетвртичетвртачетврто
5thпетипетапето
6thшестишесташесто
7thседмиседмаседмо
8thосмиосмаосмо
9thдеветидеветадевето
10thдесетидесетадесето

The first four are the forms most worth memorizing individually. After that, formation is more transparent: пет → пети, шест → шести, девет → девети, десет → десети. Ordinary spelling does not mark their pitch accents; pronounce them from a reliable dictionary or audio source rather than adding written accent marks.

Први аутобус креће у шест, а други у пола седам.

The first bus leaves at six, and the second at half past six.

Моја канцеларија је на трећем спрату, у четвртој соби лево.

My office is on the third floor, in the fourth room on the left.

The locatives трећем and четвртој agree with nouns of different gender. Serbian does not leave an ordinal unchanged after a preposition.

Larger ordinals

Some useful round ordinals are једанаести, дванаести, двадесети, тридесети, стоти, хиљадити. In a multiword ordinal, only the last component becomes ordinal; all earlier components remain cardinal.

NumberSpoken/written in words
21stдвадесет први
32ndтридесет други
43rdчетрдесет трећи
108thсто осми
202ndдвеста други

Она је добила сто други примерак књиге, а мени су послали сто трећи.

She received the 102nd copy of the book, and they sent me the 103rd.

Данас славимо двадесет пету годишњицу отварања библиотеке.

Today we are celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the library's opening.

Only пети in двадесет пету carries the ordinal morphology, but the entire expression forms one ordinal and its last word declines as feminine accusative.

💡
For a multiword ordinal, keep every component cardinal except the final one: сто двадесет трећи, not a sequence of several ordinal words.

Ordinals decline like definite adjectives

The following model with први shows the most useful singular forms. Longer ordinals use the same endings on their last component.

CaseMasculineFeminineNeuter
Nominativeпрвипрвапрво
Genitiveпрвог(а)првепрвог(а)
Dative/locativeпрвом(е)првојпрвом(е)
Accusativeпрви (inanimate), првог(а) (animate)првупрво
Instrumentalпрвимпрвомпрвим

Разговарали смо са првим кандидатом, а другог кандидата зовемо сутра.

We spoke with the first candidate, and we're calling the second candidate tomorrow.

The instrumental првим кандидатом follows са. Animate masculine accusative другог кандидата matches the genitive-shaped adjective form. This is ordinary adjective agreement, not cardinal numeral government.

Ordinals can stand alone when the noun is understood, and their ending still reflects it.

Мој воз полази у осам; твој је следећи, а њен је трећи на табли.

My train leaves at eight; yours is the next one, and hers is third on the board.

The period after an Arabic numeral

Write an Arabic ordinal with a period: 1., 2., 21., 300. Do not attach an English-style ending or a Serbian case ending with a hyphen. The surrounding noun and syntax tell the reader how to pronounce and decline it.

Станујемо на 4. спрату, а састанак је у 12. сали.

We live on the fourth floor, and the meeting is in the twelfth room.

The written 4. is read четвртом after на with location; 12. is read дванаестој after у with location. The digit itself does not visibly change, but the spoken form does.

Запис „21. кандидат“ чита се „двадесет први кандидат“, а „са 21. кандидатом“ чита се „са двадесет првим кандидатом“.

The notation ‘21st candidate’ is read ‘twenty-first candidate,’ while ‘with the 21st candidate’ is read ‘with the twenty-first candidate.’

Roman numerals conventionally express order without an added period: XXI век, II поглавље. Arabic 21. век carries the period.

💡
The period tells you “ordinal,” not which case ending to pronounce. Recover gender and case from the noun phrase before reading the number aloud.

Dates and years

In a numeric date, day, month, and year are ordinal numbers and take periods: 5. 10. 2026. Standard typography includes spaces between the components. When the month is written as a word, it is lowercase and genitive: 5. октобра 2026. године.

Конференција почиње 5. октобра 2026. године.

The conference begins on October 5, 2026.

Датум 5. 10. 2026. чита се „петог октобра две хиљаде двадесет шесте године“.

The date 5 October 2026 is read ‘the fifth of October, two thousand twenty-six.’

English month-first notation can reverse the meaning of a numeric date. Serbian uses day–month–year. See time and dates for month names and fuller scheduling language.

Order, age, and price are different jobs

Do not use an ordinal merely because a digit appears. Age and price normally use cardinals; birthdays and numbered positions use ordinals.

Мила има двадесет једну годину и данас слави двадесет први рођендан.

Mila is twenty-one years old and is celebrating her twenty-first birthday today.

Прва карта кошта петсто динара, а свака следећа четиристо.

The first ticket costs five hundred dinars, and each subsequent one costs four hundred.

Similarly, прва два кандидата means “the first two candidates.” The ordinal agrees with the paucal phrase: masculine кандидат produces прва два кандидата, not ordinary singular први.

Прва два кандидата су прошла тест, а трећи није.

The first two candidates passed the test, but the third did not.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Decline a compound ordinal

Put “the twenty-third participant” after са, then use it as an animate direct object.

Разговарао сам са двадесет трећим учесником и касније позвао двадесет трећег учесника.

I spoke with the twenty-third participant and later called the twenty-third participant.

Task 2: Write and read a date

Write March 8, 2027 in Serbian numeric order, then give its spoken form.

8. 3. 2027. — осмог марта две хиљаде двадесет седме године.

March 8, 2027 — the eighth of March, two thousand twenty-seven.

Common Mistakes

Omitting the period after an Arabic ordinal

❌ Састанак је 5 октобра.

Incorrect—an ordinal day written with an Arabic numeral requires a period: 5. октобра.

✅ Састанак је 5. октобра.

The meeting is on October 5.

Adding a written suffix to a digit

❌ Канцеларија се налази на 7-ом спрату.

Incorrect—do not attach a case ending to the digit; mark the ordinal with a period.

✅ Канцеларија се налази на 7. спрату.

The office is on the seventh floor.

Making every component ordinal

❌ Ово је стоти двадесети трећи захтев.

Incorrect—in 123rd, only the last component is ordinal.

✅ Ово је сто двадесет трећи захтев.

This is the 123rd request.

Leaving the ordinal in nominative after a preposition

❌ Разговарамо о први предлогу.

Incorrect—о requires locative, so both ordinal and noun must be locative.

✅ Разговарамо о првом предлогу.

We're discussing the first proposal.

Using a cardinal for position

❌ Она је заузела три место.

Incorrect—rank requires the agreeing ordinal треће, not cardinal три.

✅ Она је заузела треће место.

She took third place.

Key Takeaways

  • Ordinals agree and decline like definite adjectives.
  • The first four forms are први, други, трећи, четврти; larger multiword ordinals make only the final component ordinal.
  • Arabic digits need a period to mark ordinal meaning; Roman numerals do not.
  • Numeric Serbian dates follow day–month–year and place periods after ordinal components.
  • Age and price use cardinals; birthdays, ranks, floors, and sequence positions use ordinals.
