The Paucal (2-4) in Detail

After два/две, три, четири, Serbian uses a small-number form traditionally called the paucal. It descends from older dual syntax, but in contemporary Serbian it covers two, three, and four. For masculine and neuter nouns it often looks like genitive singular; for feminine nouns it often looks like nominative plural. Its phrase-level and predicate agreement show that it is more than either of those labels.

Building the paucal phrase

Два combines with masculine and neuter nouns; две combines with feminine nouns. Три and четири have one form for all genders.

Gender234
Masculineдва нова рачунатри нова рачуначетири нова рачуна
Feminineдве нове понудетри нове понудечетири нове понуде
Neuterдва важна писматри важна писмачетири важна писма

Masculine and neuter modifiers take -а: два нова рачуна, три важна писма. Feminine modifiers take -е: две нове понуде. Demonstratives and possessives join the same pattern.

Та два стара моста биће затворена до петка.

Those two old bridges will be closed until Friday.

Ове три кратке поруке стигле су током састанка.

These three short messages arrived during the meeting.

Наша четири резервна места још су слободна.

Our four reserved seats are still available.

English simply pluralizes bridges, messages, and seats. Serbian makes the numeral, determiner, adjective, noun, and sometimes predicate participate in the small-number pattern.

💡
Do not identify the paucal from the noun ending alone. Look at the entire phrase: та два нова стана is a coherent agreement pattern, not a string of unrelated genitive singulars.

Predicate agreement after two to four

With masculine and neuter paucal subjects, standard formal agreement uses the neuter plural form of an adjectival predicate or past participle. Feminine phrases use feminine plural.

Два локала су затворена, али су три продавнице отворене.

Two business premises are closed, but three shops are open.

Четири писма су стигла истог дана.

Four letters arrived on the same day.

When the counted referents are male humans, masculine-plural semantic agreement is also standard and very common.

Два техничара су стигла пре осам.

Two technicians arrived before eight. (formal paucal agreement)

Два техничара су стигли пре осам.

Two technicians arrived before eight. (semantic masculine agreement)

These are genuine alternatives, not a formal-versus-ungrammatical pair. For objects and abstract nouns, keep the formal paucal pattern: два рачуна су плаћена, not masculine plural плаћени.

Compound numbers and the 11–14 block

Any compound number whose final independent unit is two, three, or four triggers the paucal: двадесет два, сто три, двеста четири. The gender contrast remains visible with final two.

Резервисали смо двадесет две собе и двадесет два паркинг-места.

We reserved twenty-two rooms and twenty-two parking spaces.

За трку су се пријавила 204 учесника; број 204 чита се „двеста четири“.

Two hundred and four participants registered for the race; 204 is read ‘two hundred and four.’

The teen numbers 12, 13, 14 do not end syntactically in separate два, три, четири. They therefore take the 5+ pattern: дванаест соба, тринаест писама, четрнаест учесника. The same applies to 112–114, 212–214, and so on.

Хотел има двеста дванаест соба, али само сто двадесет две собе имају балкон.

The hotel has 212 rooms, but only 122 rooms have a balcony.

💡
Read the final two digits. Endings 02–04 use the paucal, but 12–14 use genitive plural: 102 места, 114 места happen to look alike with this noun, so test the rule with године/година or поруке/порука.

Oba and obe share the pattern

Оба “both” combines with masculine and neuter nouns; обе with feminine nouns. Their noun phrases use the same paucal agreement as два/две.

Оба уговора су потписана, а обе копије су послате клијенту.

Both contracts have been signed, and both copies have been sent to the client.

Do not confuse оба/обе with collective обоје, which normally refers to a mixed pair, two young beings, or two abstract alternatives. That system is covered under collective numerals and pairs.

Prices, ages, and short time spans

Everyday formulas preserve the paucal even when the numeral is written as digits.

Улазница кошта двадесет два динара, а гардероба још три динара.

The ticket costs twenty-two dinars, and the cloakroom costs another three dinars.

Лена има тридесет четири године и већ четири године ради у истој фирми.

Lena is thirty-four years old and has already worked at the same company for four years.

Враћам се за два дана; састанак је у четири сата.

I'm coming back in two days; the meeting is at four o'clock.

English uses to be for age, but Serbian uses имати plus a counted expression: literally “Lena has thirty-four years.” За два дана expresses a time until an event; у четири сата gives clock time. Their nouns still show the paucal form.

Case and the declining option

In nominative and accusative environments, the basic forms are два/две, три, четири plus paucal. In contemporary Serbian, these unchanged phrases also occur widely after prepositions:

Путовали смо са три велика кофера и вратили се после четири дана.

We traveled with three large suitcases and returned after four days.

The inherited declined forms remain standard, especially in careful and formal prose. When the numeral declines, the rest of the phrase takes the matching plural case:

NumberGenitiveDative/instrumental/locative
2 m./n.двајудвама
2 f.двејудвема
3тријутрима
4четиријучетирима

Разговарали смо са трима сведоцима, а извештај се заснива на изјавама трију сведока.

We spoke with three witnesses, and the report is based on the statements of three witnesses. (formal)

The direct instrumental phrase uses са трима сведоцима. The possessive genitive phrase uses изјаве трију сведока. The numeral declension page separates these paradigms fully.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Build three gender patterns

Use two with нови прозор, нова лампа, and ново огледало.

Наручили смо два нова прозора, две нове лампе и два нова огледала.

We ordered two new windows, two new lamps, and two new mirrors.

Task 2: Apply the compound-number test

Use година after 22, 24, 12, and 14.

Курс постоји двадесет две године; фестивал постоји двадесет четири године; једна млађа организација постоји дванаест година, а друга четрнаест година.

The course has existed for twenty-two years; the festival for twenty-four; one younger organization for twelve years, and another for fourteen.

Common Mistakes

Using dve with a neuter noun

❌ Резервисали смо две места поред прозора.

Incorrect—место is neuter, so two is два and the modifier is два места.

✅ Резервисали смо два места поред прозора.

We reserved two seats by the window.

Using an ordinary masculine plural

❌ Испред зграде стоје четири нови аутомобили.

Incorrect—after четири, use paucal четири нова аутомобила.

✅ Испред зграде стоје четири нова аутомобила.

Four new cars are parked in front of the building.

Extending the paucal to twelve

❌ До јутра су стигле дванаест поруке.

Incorrect—дванаест requires genitive plural порука and baseline neuter-singular predicate agreement.

✅ До јутра је стигло дванаест порука.

By morning, twelve messages had arrived.

Giving an inanimate masculine phrase masculine-plural predicate agreement

❌ Два рачуна су плаћени јуче.

Incorrect in the standard paucal pattern for inanimate nouns—the participle should be neuter plural плаћена.

✅ Два рачуна су плаћена јуче.

Two bills were paid yesterday.

Mixing declined and undeclined phrase shapes

❌ Разговарали смо са трима сведока.

Incorrect—declined трима requires instrumental plural сведоцима.

✅ Разговарали смо са трима сведоцима.

We spoke with three witnesses. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Два is masculine/neuter and две feminine; three and four do not mark gender.
  • Masculine/neuter paucal modifiers take -а; feminine modifiers take -е.
  • Compound numbers ending in 2–4 use the paucal, except those ending in 12–14.
  • Formal predicate agreement is neuter plural with masculine/neuter phrases and feminine plural with feminine phrases; male-human semantic agreement is also standard.
  • Declined numeral phrases survive in careful prose, while unchanged phrases are widespread in contemporary use.
