Advanced Numeral Syntax

Advanced numeral syntax is difficult because several grammatical layers can point in different directions. The numeral determines the form inside its noun phrase; the whole phrase occupies a case role in the clause; the predicate may follow morphological agreement, default neuter singular, or—especially with people—semantic plural. Contemporary Serbian also alternates between declined and unchanged forms of два/две, три, четири, so a good analysis must distinguish standard variation from a hybrid error.

Four Layers, Not One “Number Rule”

Analyze a quantified expression in this order:

1. the numeral class: један, paucal 2–4, or 5+;
2. the internal noun and modifier form;
3. the phrase's external case and whether the numeral declines;
4. predicate agreement with the quantified subject.

Paucal три selects добро очувана рукописа. As a subject, the masculine inanimate phrase takes the dependable paucal predicate су стигла, morphologically neuter plural.

With седам, the complement is genitive plural добро очуваних рукописа, and default predicate agreement is neuter singular је стигло. English plural manuscripts arrived hides both distinctions.

Paucal Predicates and Human Semantic Agreement

With masculine or neuter inanimate phrases after two to four, use the paucal participle or adjective in -а. Feminine phrases use feminine plural.

Male-human subjects admit a genuine alternation. Morphological paucal agreement packages the group through the quantified phrase; masculine plural agreement foregrounds the people as plural participants.

Both are standard. Speaker, register, animacy, and discourse construal affect preference. This is not a license to use masculine plural with objects: два моста су обновљена, not обновљени, in the regular inanimate pattern.

Five and Higher: Default versus Semantic Plural

A cardinal from five upward behaves like a quantifying head with a genitive-plural complement. The portable edited baseline is neuter singular agreement.

With human referents, plural agreement occurs when speakers construe the people as active individuals. It is real variation, but not equally natural with every verb or for every speaker.

The second version is favored by agentive human interpretation and by the subsequent collective action. In conservative edited prose, пет кандидата је затим потписало remains the safest morphological pattern. Do not describe either strategy as a simple singular/plural “correction”; specify the construal and style.

Collective Numerals Shift with Discourse

Collective двоје, троје, четворо takes a genitive complement and commonly triggers neuter singular agreement when the quantified group is introduced as a unit.

Once those people become accessible individuals, plural agreement can take over:

Do not use a collective numeral for a group known to be all female. With a mixed group, the collective numeral does not specify how many members are male or female. External Case: Decline Fully or Leave the Phrase Intact

The numerals two to four preserve oblique forms in careful style. Contemporary Serbian also widely leaves the whole base numeral phrase unchanged after a preposition.

The first keeps base три искусна преводиоца intact. The second declines every relevant word into instrumental plural. A hybrid is not a third option.

Compound numerals normally resist full declension. An ending in један can decline adjective-like; an ending in 2–4 may remain unchanged or carry the final oblique form in careful prose.

The first compound ends in declinable један → једним. The second uses the widespread unchanged phrase двадесет три власника. Formal са двадесет трима власницима is also possible.

Nested Numeral Nouns

Хиљада, милион, милијарда are nouns as well as numerical units. They are counted and declined externally while governing their own genitive complement.

Paucal два милиона controls су издвојена; inside that phrase, милиона governs genitive plural динара. With a preposition, the outer numeral-noun layer may decline:

The comparative quantifier мање од selects the comparison phrase; do not mechanically turn every following word into instrumental merely because English begins with with.

Approximation and Comparison

Quantifiers such as око, више од, мање од, приближно create different syntactic frames, even when the approximate total is similar.

Default neuter singular is the stable edited choice. Human semantic plural is possible in some contexts, but approximation plus a quantified group favors group-level agreement.

Distributive по

По + numeral phrase distributes a quantity over members, occasions, or locations. The noun form still follows the numeral.

The distributive meaning comes from по plus context. Predicate number follows the actual subject—ми understood in the first sentence, учесници in the second—not the distributed object.

Coordinating Quantified Subjects

Once two quantified phrases are joined by и, they form a coordinated controller. Resolve the coordination rather than agreeing automatically with the nearest numeral phrase.

Mixed masculine извештаја and feminine табеле resolve here to masculine plural били доступни. Postverbal closest-conjunct patterns exist, but they are variable; a preverbal resolved subject is clearest in edited prose. See coordination agreement.

A Formal Quantitative Passage

The passage moves through default 5+ agreement, an ordinary paucal subject, distributive по, a fully declined instrumental phrase, and inanimate paucal agreement. The syntax tells the reader whether each number is a subject, complement, or distributed object.

Practice

Task 1: Build Two Registers

Put “three detailed proposals” after о first as an unchanged numeral phrase and then as a fully declined careful-style phrase. Explain why a hybrid adjective ending fails.

Task 2: Choose Predicate Agreement

Write one sentence with three inanimate masculine nouns, one with three male professionals, and one with seven applications as subjects. Give the morphological baseline; then identify where semantic plural is genuinely available.
