Numeral Government: 1 / 2-4 / 5+

English normally puts any noun after two or more into an ordinary plural. Serbian has three patterns instead: one selects a singular noun, two to four select a special small-number form called the paucal, and five or more govern genitive plural. The last relevant part of a compound number normally decides which pattern applies.

The three-way rule

NumberCounted phraseNoun form
1један нови стан / једна нова кућа / једно ново местоsingular, agreeing with један
2–4два нова стана / три нове куће / четири нова местаpaucal
5+пет нових станова / шест нових кућа / седам нових местаgenitive plural

Један behaves like an adjective: it agrees with the noun in gender, number, and case. Два is used with masculine and neuter nouns, while feminine nouns take две. Три and четири do not distinguish gender. After five and higher simple cardinals, the noun and its modifiers appear in genitive plural.

У згради је остао један слободан стан.

One available apartment remains in the building.

У згради су остала три слободна стана.

Three available apartments remain in the building.

У згради је остало осам слободних станова.

Eight available apartments remain in the building.

The endings reveal three different structures: један слободан стан, paucal три слободна стана, and genitive plural осам слободних станова. Calling the middle form “genitive singular” is a useful shape comparison for masculine and neuter nouns, but not a complete analysis: its agreement pattern is specifically paucal.

💡
Learn counted phrases as three columns, not as “singular versus plural.” Serbian preserves a small-number pattern between ordinary singular and the genitive plural used after five or more.

Compound numbers: inspect the ending, but watch 11–14

For a compound cardinal, the final unit normally controls the noun:

На списку је двадесет један кандидат.

There are twenty-one candidates on the list.

На списку су двадесет три кандидата.

There are twenty-three candidates on the list.

На списку је двадесет осам кандидата.

There are twenty-eight candidates on the list.

Numbers ending in 11, 12, 13, or 14 belong to the 5+ pattern because their final spoken element is једанаест, дванаест, тринаест, четрнаест, not an independent један, два, три, четири.

У архиви је сто једанаест старих мапа, а у читаоници сто двадесет једна нова мапа.

There are 111 old maps in the archive and 121 new maps in the reading room.

Сала има двеста дванаест места, а за концерт су продата сто двадесет два места.

The hall has 212 seats, and 122 seats have been sold for the concert.

This final-element rule also explains ages and prices: двадесет једна година, двадесет две године, двадесет пет година; сто један динар, сто два динара, сто пет динара.

💡
For a number written in digits, say its last two digits mentally. That catches the crucial contrast between 112 (дванаест, 5+ pattern) and 122 (двадесет два, paucal pattern).

Agreement inside the counted phrase

Everything modifying the counted noun follows the same numerical pattern. With one, modifiers are singular. With two to four, masculine and neuter modifiers usually end in -а, while feminine modifiers have -е. With five or more, modifiers are genitive plural.

Купили смо две велике свеске и четири плава пенкала.

We bought two large notebooks and four blue pens.

За радионицу нам треба десет великих свезака и шест плавих пенкала.

For the workshop we need ten large notebooks and six blue pens.

Demonstratives and possessives follow the same logic: та два рачуна, ове три поруке, његових седам предлога. The phrase after two to four is not just a noun with an unusual ending; it is a whole paucal agreement domain.

Predicate agreement

When a counted phrase is the subject, the predicate reflects the numerical structure too. The safest standard patterns are:

SubjectPast predicatePattern
један возје стигаоsingular masculine
два возасу стиглаpaucal, neuter plural form
две групесу стиглеpaucal, feminine plural form
пет возова / групаје стиглоneuter singular

Два пакета су стигла јутрос, а пет пошиљака је стигло поподне.

Two parcels arrived this morning, and five shipments arrived in the afternoon.

With male human referents after two to four, semantic masculine-plural agreement is also standard and common: два студента су дошли. The formally matching paucal pattern два студента су дошла is also standard. After five or more, neuter singular is the dependable baseline; semantic plural occurs, especially with people, but should not be treated as the default learner pattern.

Три волонтера су дошла раније; сва тројица су помогла око опреме.

Three male volunteers arrived early; all three helped with the equipment.

The first clause uses formal paucal agreement. The second switches to a masculine-person numeral and semantic masculine plural. See predicate agreement for the wider variation.

What happens after a preposition

Један declines normally: са једним колегом, о једној понуди. The ordinary cardinals from five through the hundreds are indeclinable, while their noun complement remains genitive plural: са пет колега, о десет понуда. Numeral nouns such as хиљада and милион have their own declension; see the dedicated numeral declension page.

The cardinals two to four have inherited oblique forms—двама/двема, трима, четирима and genitives двају/двеју, трију, четирију—but contemporary usage increasingly avoids them. They remain available in careful or formal prose; ordinary contemporary standard also uses unchanged numeral phrases after a preposition.

Комисија је разговарала са двама сведоцима.

The committee spoke with two witnesses. (formal)

Комисија је разговарала са два сведока.

The committee spoke with two witnesses.

Do not conclude that every numeral is indeclinable: један always inflects, and declined два–четири remain part of the standard system. The dedicated numeral declension page gives the full paradigms and stylistic choices.

Hearing the rule in a price

Digits conceal the controlling ending, so silently expand them before choosing the noun form.

Цена је 1.124 динара; број се чита „хиљаду сто двадесет четири“ и зато стоји облик динара.

The price is 1,124 dinars; the number is read ‘one thousand one hundred twenty-four,’ so динара is used.

Here 24 triggers the paucal-shaped динара. The same visible form also happens to be genitive plural after many higher numbers, which is why another noun—година / године / година—often makes the contrast clearer.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose all three noun forms

Use порука after 31, 34, and 38. Expand the final element before choosing the form.

Стигла је тридесет једна порука, затим још тридесет четири поруке, а до подне укупно тридесет осам порука.

Thirty-one messages arrived, then another thirty-four, and by noon thirty-eight messages in total.

Task 2: Make the modifier agree

Use нови извештај after one, three, and seven.

Прочитао сам један нови извештај, прегледао три нова извештаја и архивирао седам нових извештаја.

I read one new report, reviewed three new reports, and archived seven new reports.

Common Mistakes

Treating every number above one as an ordinary plural

❌ Купили смо три нови столови.

Incorrect—after три, the entire masculine phrase must use paucal forms: три нова стола.

✅ Купили смо три нова стола за салу.

We bought three new tables for the hall.

Using the paucal after five

❌ У ормару је пет чиста пешкира.

Incorrect—пет governs genitive plural: пет чистих пешкира.

✅ У ормару је пет чистих пешкира.

There are five clean towels in the cupboard.

Forgetting the 11–14 exception

❌ До подне су стигле сто дванаест поруке.

Incorrect—112 ends in дванаест, so it requires genitive plural порука and baseline neuter-singular predicate agreement.

✅ До подне је стигло сто дванаест порука.

By noon, 112 messages had arrived.

Giving a 5+ subject an ordinary plural predicate

❌ Седам пријава је стигла јутрос.

Incorrect—the singular predicate after седам must be neuter стигло, not feminine стигла.

✅ Седам пријава је стигло јутрос.

Seven applications arrived this morning.

Treating jedan as indeclinable

❌ Разговарала је са један кандидатом.

Incorrect—један declines with the instrumental noun: једним кандидатом.

✅ Разговарала је са једним кандидатом после интервјуа.

She spoke with one candidate after the interview.

Key Takeaways

  • One selects an agreeing singular; two to four select a paucal; five or more govern genitive plural.
  • Compound numbers normally follow their final unit, but 11–14 always belong to the 5+ pattern.
  • Modifiers and predicates reflect the same three-way architecture.
  • Један declines, two to four can decline, and five upward are indeclinable cardinals.
  • Serbian numeral syntax combines agreement, a dual remnant, and genitive government—it does not have one universal “plural after a number” rule.
