Serbian predicates agree with a grammatical controller, not automatically with the number or gender suggested by English. This becomes visible with collective nouns, numeral phrases, plural-only nouns, and human-denoting nouns whose grammatical features do not transparently match their referent. Agreement can appear on the finite auxiliary, the l-participle, and a predicative adjective.
Coordinated subjects have their own person and gender-resolution system and are outside this page; see coordination agreement.
Collective nouns: one grammatical unit, many members
Singular collectives such as већина, група, публика, особље normally trigger singular agreement with their grammatical gender.
Већина учесника је стигла пре девет.
Most participants arrived before nine.
Особље је било љубазно и добро организовано.
The staff were friendly and well organized.
Feminine већина controls је стигла, not nearby genitive plural учесника. Neuter особље controls је било љубазно. Plural agreement by meaning occurs with some collectives, especially human groups and at a distance from the noun, but edited neutral prose favors grammatical singular when the collective is the syntactic head.
Група студената је ушла у салу и одмах заузела прва два реда.
A group of students entered the hall and immediately took the first two rows.
Do not let the nearest plural noun attract the verb.
Деца and other morphological collectives
Деца denotes several children but follows a special agreement pattern: the auxiliary is plural су, while the l-participle and adjective use neuter plural -а.
Деца су се вратила уморна, али задовољна.
The children returned tired but happy.
This is not feminine singular despite the ending -а. Compare ordinary feminine plural:
Девојчице су се вратиле уморне, али задовољне.
The girls returned tired but happy.
The contrast су се вратила versus су се вратиле must be learned with the subject type.
Two to four: paucal agreement
Masculine and neuter phrases with два, три, четири use the paucal noun form and typically show predicate forms in -а.
Три прозора су остала отворена целе ноћи.
Three windows remained open all night.
Два техничара су стигла пре почетка преноса.
Two technicians arrived before the broadcast began.
Feminine counted nouns use feminine plural forms:
Три техничарке су стигле спремне за пробу.
Three female technicians arrived ready for the rehearsal.
The finite present has plural agreement: два техничара раде. The distinctive paucal shape is most visible on participles and adjectives: су радила/стигла, су спремна.
Five and higher: genuine standard variation
Quantified phrases with пет, шест and higher or with много, неколико often take neuter singular agreement, especially when presented as an amount.
Пет пријава је стигло после истека рока.
Five applications arrived after the deadline.
Неколико места је остало слободно.
Several seats remained available.
With human referents, plural semantic agreement is also established, particularly when the individuals are foregrounded:
Пет ватрогасаца су ушли у зграду и брзо се вратили.
Five firefighters entered the building and returned quickly.
Usage varies by numeral expression, animacy, word order, and style. Do not invent one universal correction from је дошло to су дошли or vice versa. Within one sentence or edited passage, keep the chosen construal coherent.
Pluralia tantum control plural agreement
Nouns used only in the plural agree according to their grammatical plural class, even when English names one object.
Врата су остала откључана после састанка.
The door remained unlocked after the meeting.
Маказе су биле оштре, али неудобне за дуг рад.
The scissors were sharp but uncomfortable for prolonged use.
Кола су стигла прљава од блата.
The car arrived covered in mud.
Neuter plural врата, кола take су остала/стигла; feminine plural маказе takes су биле оштре. English singular door/car is irrelevant to Serbian agreement.
Grammatical gender and the real-world referent
Some professional nouns allow predicate agreement with the person's natural gender. Судија can refer to a man or woman; the participle normally follows the actual referent.
Судија је стигла и одмах отворила претрес.
The female judge arrived and immediately opened the hearing.
Судија је стигао и одмах отворио претрес.
The male judge arrived and immediately opened the hearing.
By contrast, ordinary lexically gendered heads control grammatical agreement even if the group contains mixed people: особа is feminine, лице is neuter.
Одговорно лице је било присутно током контроле.
The responsible person was present during the inspection.
Do not copy English they were when Serbian head лице is neuter singular.
A controlled passage
Већина гостију је стигла на време. Две породице су дошле с децом, а деца су била необично тиха. Пет места је ипак остало празно, док су врата сале све време била отворена.
Most guests arrived on time. Two families came with children, and the children were unusually quiet. Five seats nevertheless remained empty, while the hall doors stayed open throughout.
The passage maintains feminine singular већина, feminine plural две породице, special деца су била тиха, neuter singular quantity пет места је остало, and neuter plural врата су била отворена.
