Pluralia tantum are nouns used only in plural forms, even when they denote one object: врата ‘a door,’ наочаре ‘a pair of glasses,’ панталоне ‘a pair of trousers,’ кола ‘a car.’ Serbian grammar sees plural morphology, so modifiers and verbs must also be plural. English number is not a safe guide.
These nouns still have gender, case, and animacy properties. Their gender is visible through plural agreement, while counting requires special numeral adjectives such as двоја, двоје, and четворе, not ordinary два/две.
One Object, Plural Grammar
Many plural-only nouns name objects with paired or connected parts:
| Serbian noun | Usual English equivalent | Agreement frame |
|---|---|---|
| врата | door | ова врата су отворена |
| наочаре | glasses | ове наочаре су нове |
| маказе | scissors | ове маказе су оштре |
| панталоне | trousers | ове панталоне су дугачке |
| клешта | pliers | ова клешта су тешка |
| кола | car | ова кола су брза |
Ова врата су закључана, па уђите на други улаз.
This door is locked, so use the other entrance.
Где су ми наочаре? Оставила сам их поред кревета.
Where are my glasses? I left them beside the bed.
Ове панталоне су ми предуге, али су веома удобне.
These trousers are too long for me, but they’re very comfortable.
English already uses plural glasses, scissors, and trousers, but singular door and car. Serbian treats every noun in the table as plural. Use plural су and plural pronoun их, never singular је or га for the noun phrase.
Gender Is Visible in the Plural Modifier
Plural-only nouns can be masculine, feminine, or neuter. Use ти/ови for masculine plural, те/ове for feminine plural, and та/ова for neuter plural.
| Gender | Examples | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| masculine plural | Карловци | ти познати Карловци |
| feminine plural | маказе, наочаре, панталоне, санке, новине | те нове маказе |
| neuter plural | врата, кола, клешта, леђа, уста, плућа | та велика врата |
Та тешка кола троше превише горива.
That heavy car uses too much fuel.
Те старе санке још стоје у подруму.
That old sled is still in the basement.
Карловци су били мирни тог зимског јутра.
Karlovci was quiet that winter morning.
The place name Карловци has masculine plural agreement even though English treats the town name as singular. Proper names can therefore belong to the category just as common nouns do.
Case Paradigm: Neuter Plural врата
Because врата has no singular, its paradigm consists only of plural forms:
| Case | Form | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | врата | ова врата |
| Genitive | врата | без ових врата |
| Dative | вратима | прилазим овим вратима |
| Accusative | врата | отварам ова врата |
| Vocative | врата | rare direct address |
| Instrumental | вратима | пред овим вратима |
| Locative | вратима | говорим о овим вратима |
Стајали смо пред затвореним вратима скоро десет минута.
We stood in front of the closed door for almost ten minutes.
На овим вратима нема броја стана.
There is no apartment number on this door.
Nominative, accusative, and genitive share врата in ordinary spelling; dative, instrumental, and locative share вратима. The demonstrative and preposition reveal the case.
Case Paradigm: Feminine Plural наочаре
Feminine plural-only nouns use familiar feminine plural endings:
| Case | Form of наочаре | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative/Accusative/Vocative | наочаре | ове наочаре |
| Genitive | наочара | без ових наочара |
| Dative/Instrumental/Locative | наочарима | са овим наочарима |
Без наочара не могу да прочитам ситна слова.
Without my glasses I can’t read the small print.
Са новим наочарима много јасније видим таблу.
With my new glasses I can see the board much more clearly.
The same architecture appears in маказе–маказа–маказама and панталоне–панталона–панталонама.
Body Parts and Other Non-counted Plural-only Nouns
Some body-part nouns are plural-only: леђа, уста, плућа are neuter plural, while груди is feminine plural. They normally refer to one person’s body part without special counting.
После селидбе су ме болела леђа целог дана.
My back hurt all day after the move.
Дубоко је удахнула и напунила плућа ваздухом.
She took a deep breath and filled her lungs with air.
The perfect construction леђа су болела uses plural auxiliary су and neuter plural participle болела. English singular back does not change the Serbian agreement.
Other common plural-only nouns include новине ‘newspaper’ in that lexical meaning and place names such as Дивчибаре. Learn the agreement pattern with the noun; the surface ending alone may not uniquely identify gender.
Counting: Number Adjectives, Not Ordinary Cardinals
To count separate objects named by pluralia tantum, standard Serbian uses number adjectives. These agree with the plural-only noun; the broader numeral system is explained on the collective and paired numerals page.
| One set/object | Two | Three/Four |
|---|---|---|
| једна врата | двоја врата | троја/четвора врата |
| једне маказе | двоје маказе | троје/четворе маказе |
| једне панталоне | двоје панталоне | троје/четворе панталоне |
| једна кола | двоја кола | троја/четвора кола |
Стан има двоја улазна врата и једна врата ка тераси.
The apartment has two entrance doors and one door leading to the terrace.
За посао сам купила двоје панталоне и једне тамне фармерке.
I bought two pairs of trousers and one pair of dark jeans for work.
The common spoken phrase два пара наочара is also clear and standard: it counts pairs with an ordinary cardinal and puts наочара in the genitive plural. It is often easier than actively producing a less familiar number adjective.
У торби носим два пара наочара: једне за читање и једне за сунце.
I carry two pairs of glasses in my bag: one for reading and one for the sun.
Do not substitute the collective numeral двоје as an invariable word before every plural-only noun. The standard number adjective agrees: neuter двоја врата, feminine двоје маказе. Its oblique forms also decline: без двојих врата, са двојим вратима.
Animacy and the Absence of a Singular
Plural accusative does not show the masculine singular animate split. A plural-only masculine place or people term uses its plural paradigm; feminine and neuter nouns use theirs. More importantly, you cannot invent a singular by removing the final vowel: one door is једна врата, not једно врато, and one pair of scissors is једне маказе, not једна маказа in the standard object meaning.
Отворили смо једна врата, а друга су остала закључана.
We opened one door, while the other remained locked.
Task 1: Match the Agreement
Choose ови, ове, or ова, then check the full sentence.
Ова стара врата су недавно офарбана.
This old door was recently painted. (neuter plural)
Ове оштре маказе нису за децу.
These sharp scissors are not for children. (feminine plural)
Ови Карловци се много разликују од града из мог детињства.
Present-day Karlovci differs greatly from the town of my childhood. (masculine plural proper name)
Task 2: Count and Change Case
First name two doors, then put the phrase after без and са.
На ходнику су двоја противпожарна врата.
There are two fire doors in the corridor. (nominative)
Зграда не може да се користи без двојих противпожарних врата.
The building cannot be used without two fire doors. (genitive)
Ходник са двојим противпожарним вратима води до степеништа.
The corridor with two fire doors leads to the staircase. (instrumental)
The number adjective and ordinary adjective both change case; врата itself has the expected genitive врата and instrumental вратима.
Common Mistakes
Using singular agreement because English has a singular
❌ Ово врата је отворено.
Incorrect — врата is neuter plural: ова врата су отворена.
✅ Ова врата су отворена.
This door is open.
Using the wrong plural gender
❌ Ова наочаре су нова.
Incorrect — наочаре is feminine plural: ове наочаре су нове.
✅ Ове наочаре су нове.
These glasses are new.
Inventing a singular form
❌ Купили смо једно врато за купатило.
Incorrect — врата has no ordinary singular; use једна врата.
✅ Купили смо једна врата за купатило.
We bought one door for the bathroom.
Using an ordinary cardinal directly
❌ Стан има два врата ка дворишту.
Incorrect in the strict standard counting pattern — use the number adjective двоја врата.
✅ Стан има двоја врата ка дворишту.
The apartment has two doors leading to the yard.
Forgetting the oblique plural form
❌ Чекамо вас пред главна врата.
Incorrect for a static position — пред takes instrumental here: пред главним вратима.
✅ Чекамо вас пред главним вратима.
We’re waiting for you in front of the main entrance.
Key Takeaways
- Pluralia tantum use plural morphology even for one object: врата су, наочаре су, кола су.
- Gender appears in agreement: ове наочаре feminine, ова врата neuter, ови Карловци masculine.
- They decline through plural cases: врата–вратима, наочаре–наочара–наочарима.
- Count them with agreeing number adjectives: двоја врата, двоје маказе; два пара наочара is a useful alternative.
- Never invent a singular such as врато or маказа for the ordinary object meaning.
