Serbian normally integrates foreign nouns and names into its case system. A foreign-looking ending does not automatically make a word indeclinable: такси has таксија, таксију, таксијем, while the male name Хари has Харија, Харију, Харијем. Truly indeclinable items—especially foreign female names not ending in -а—keep one noun form, but surrounding words still show case, gender, and syntactic role.
The key decision is lexical: learn whether a particular noun declines and which stem it uses. Word order cannot replace that information, and copying the unchanged English spelling through every Serbian case often produces an unnatural result.
Serbian Prefers Adaptation
Established loanwords usually enter a Serbian gender and declension class. Consonant-final loans such as хотел, компјутер, and филм decline as masculine nouns. Many vowel-final masculine loans and names add -ј- or another adapted stem before case endings.
Резервисали смо собу у новом хотелу близу станице.
We booked a room in a new hotel near the station.
Без компјутера данас не могу да завршим извештај.
I can’t finish the report today without a computer.
После интервјуа разговарали смо са уредником.
After the interview, we spoke with the editor.
The genitives хотела, компјутера, and интервјуа show that these are not frozen citations. Serbian attaches its own endings after adapting the stem.
The -и Pattern: такси and жири
Masculine loans ending in -и, including такси and жири, insert ј before most endings. Такси is grammatically masculine and inanimate, so accusative singular equals nominative.
| Case | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | такси | таксији |
| Genitive | таксија | таксија |
| Dative | таксију | таксијима |
| Accusative | такси | таксије |
| Vocative | такси | таксији |
| Instrumental | таксијем | таксијима |
| Locative | таксију | таксијима |
Позваћу такси чим преузмемо кофере.
I’ll call a taxi as soon as we collect the suitcases.
До аеродрома смо стигли таксијем за двадесет минута.
We reached the airport by taxi in twenty minutes.
Одлука жирија биће објављена у петак.
The jury’s decision will be announced on Friday.
Although жири denotes a group of people, its conventional noun pattern is masculine inanimate: бирају жири uses accusative жири, while чланови жирија uses genitive жирија.
Foreign Male Names Usually Decline
Male names are normally integrated even when they end in a foreign-looking vowel. Names in -и use the same inserted -ј- pattern: Хари–Харија–Харију–Харијем. Masculine animacy makes accusative equal to genitive.
| Case | Хари | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | Хари | Хари долази |
| Genitive | Харија | без Харија |
| Dative/Locative | Харију | пишем Харију; о Харију |
| Accusative | Харија | видим Харија |
| Vocative | Хари | Хари, сачекај! |
| Instrumental | Харијем | са Харијем |
Јуче сам упознао Харија, а данас са Харијем идем на ручак.
I met Harry yesterday, and today I’m going to lunch with him.
Names in -о also commonly decline by dropping or adapting the final vowel: Пабло–Пабла–Паблу, Пикасо–Пикаса–Пикасу. Established place names behave similarly: Осло–Осла, Чикаго–Чикага. Токио has genitive Токија and locative Токију, but its instrumental is Токиом, not Токијем.
Из Осла летимо за Београд, а у Токију остајемо пет дана.
We’re flying from Oslo to Belgrade, and we’re staying in Tokyo for five days.
Шетали смо Токиом до касно увече.
We walked around Tokyo until late in the evening.
These patterns must be learned with the established Serbian transcription. For spelling and script choices, continue with foreign names in Serbian writing.
Foreign Female Names Without -а Often Stay Indeclinable
Many foreign female names ending in a consonant or a vowel other than -а—for example Кармен, Инес, Елизабет, Мери, Наоми—keep the same noun form in every case. Natural gender still controls agreement, and modifiers carry the case endings.
| Case | Indeclinable name | Modifier shows the case |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative | Кармен | талентована Кармен |
| Genitive | Кармен | без талентоване Кармен |
| Dative | Кармен | талентованој Кармен |
| Accusative | Кармен | талентовану Кармен |
| Vocative | Кармен | Кармен! |
| Instrumental | Кармен | са талентованом Кармен |
| Locative | Кармен | о талентованој Кармен |
Разговарала сам са Кармен после концерта.
I spoke with Carmen after the concert.
Инес сам послала позивницу, а Елизабет сам већ позвала телефоном.
I sent Ines an invitation, and I already called Elizabeth by phone.
The position of Инес before the clitic cluster does not make it nominative; the verb послати assigns it dative recipient function. A longer phrase can expose that case as мојој пријатељици Инес. Serbian syntax still has cases even when one noun lacks visible endings.
Female Names in -а Do Decline
Foreign or domestic origin is irrelevant when a female name fits the productive -а class: Софија–Софије–Софији–Софију–Софијом, Моника–Монике–Моники–Монику–Моником.
Софији сам послао адресу, а са Моником ћу се наћи сутра.
I sent Sofia the address, and I’ll meet Monica tomorrow.
Do not freeze all foreign female names. The ending and established Serbian form determine whether the name joins the regular declension.
Surnames Can Be Partly Declined
With Serbian surnames in -ић, a male surname normally declines, while a female surname normally remains unchanged. The given name still declines.
Разговарао сам са Марком Јовановићем и Аном Јовановић.
I spoke with Marko Jovanović and Ana Jovanović.
The instrumental ending appears on both parts of the male name: Марком Јовановићем. In the female name, only Аном changes; Јовановић remains fixed. The same principle often applies to foreign female surnames: о Мерил Стрип, са Мерил Стрип, while modifiers around the name show case.
Документарни филм о Мерил Стрип приказан је синоћ.
A documentary about Meryl Streep was shown last night.
Do not add endings to an original-script foreign string arbitrarily. In Serbian running text, established names are normally transcribed and then treated according to Serbian rules; trademarks, URLs, and quoted original spellings may be preserved as fixed graphic units.
Gender and Animacy Still Matter
Indeclinability does not erase gender. Кармен је стигла is feminine because Carmen is a woman. Declining такси is masculine inanimate: овај такси, accusative овај такси. Declining Хари is masculine animate: accusative Харија.
Кармен је стигла старим таксијем, а Харија још чекамо.
Carmen arrived in an old taxi, and we’re still waiting for Harry.
This single sentence shows three systems: indeclinable feminine Кармен, declining inanimate таксијем, and animate masculine accusative Харија.
Task 1: Decide Whether the Noun Declines
Put the named person or object into the case required by the sentence, then compare your answer.
Чланови жирија разговарају са Мери.
The jury members are talking with Mary. (жири declines; Мери does not)
Поруку сам послала Харију и Кармен.
I sent the message to Harry and Carmen. (Хари declines; Кармен does not)
После интервјуа вратили смо се таксијем.
After the interview, we returned by taxi. (both loans decline)
Task 2: Make Case Visible Outside the Name
Because Инес stays unchanged, add a declining modifier that makes each role explicit.
Моја пријатељица Инес стиже вечерас.
My friend Ines arrives tonight. (nominative)
Мојој пријатељици Инес послала сам карту.
I sent a ticket to my friend Ines. (dative)
Са мојом пријатељицом Инес путујем у Ниш.
I’m traveling to Niš with my friend Ines. (instrumental)
Word order changes across the examples, but the agreeing phrase моја/мојој/мојом пријатељицом makes the role unambiguous.
Common Mistakes
Leaving an adapted loan unchanged
❌ До аеродрома смо стигли са такси.
Incorrect — такси declines; the instrumental is таксијем, normally without са for means of transport.
✅ До аеродрома смо стигли таксијем.
We reached the airport by taxi.
Treating a male -и name as indeclinable
❌ Јуче сам упознао Хари, а данас ручам са Хари.
Incorrect — masculine Хари takes Харија in the accusative and Харијем in the instrumental.
✅ Јуче сам упознао Харија, а данас ручам са Харијем.
I met Harry yesterday, and today I’m having lunch with him.
Adding a Serbian ending to an indeclinable female name
❌ Разговарала сам са Карменом после концерта.
Incorrect for the female name Кармен — it remains unchanged after са.
✅ После наступа сам вечерала са Кармен.
After the performance, I had dinner with Carmen.
Freezing a regular female name in -а
❌ Послала сам Софија поруку.
Incorrect — Софија belongs to the -а declension; dative is Софији.
✅ Послала сам Софији поруку.
I sent Sofia a message.
Ignoring masculine animacy
❌ Чекамо Хари испред хотела.
Incorrect — masculine animate accusative is Харија.
✅ Чекамо Харија испред хотела.
We’re waiting for Harry outside the hotel.
Key Takeaways
- Most established loans decline; foreign origin alone does not make a noun indeclinable.
- Masculine такси, жири, and male Хари insert -ј- before case endings.
- Many foreign female names not ending in -а, such as Кармен, Инес, and Мери, remain unchanged.
- Female names in -а decline regularly: Софија–Софији–Софијом.
- Gender, animacy, and syntactic case still operate when the noun itself has no visible ending.
