Serbian proper names normally participate in the case system. Марко becomes Марка, Марку, Марком; Ана becomes Ане, Ани, Ану, Аном; Нови Сад becomes Новог Сада and Новом Саду. Proper status determines capitalization and reference, but it does not freeze a name in its dictionary form.
The challenging part is that gender, final sound, and established usage all matter. Male and female bearers can make the same consonant-final surname behave differently, while some foreign female names remain unchanged and let surrounding modifiers show the case.
Native first names follow familiar noun patterns
Most male names ending in a consonant decline like animate masculine nouns. Many male names in -о also take masculine endings, while male names in -а use the -а noun endings but keep masculine agreement.
Marko sent Ana the document, and Ana called Marko.
С Милошем и Николом се налазим испред позоришта.
I’m meeting Miloš and Nikola in front of the theater.
Никола has masculine agreement despite its -а declension:
Никола је стигао раније јер је био слободан.
Nikola arrived earlier because he was free.
The vocative must be learned with the name. Милоше has a distinct ending, whereas Марко, Никола, Ана, and many other personal names use a vocative identical to the nominative. Names in -ица commonly have -ице, as in Милице.
Милице, можеш ли да ми проследиш адресу?
Milica, can you forward me the address?
A full male name usually declines in both parts
With a Serbian male surname in -ић, both the given name and surname take the required case. The surname follows masculine animate declension.
| Case | Full name |
|---|---|
| Nominative | Марко Петровић |
| Genitive | Марка Петровића |
| Dative | Марку Петровићу |
| Accusative | Марка Петровића |
| Vocative | Марко Петровићу |
| Instrumental | Марком Петровићем |
| Locative | Марку Петровићу |
О предлогу Марка Петровића гласаћемо у понедељак.
We’ll vote on Marko Petrović’s proposal on Monday.
После седнице сам разговарао с Марком Петровићем.
After the session, I spoke with Marko Petrović.
Serbian expresses possession here with genitive Марка Петровића, not an apostrophe construction. A title or appositive normally joins the same case phrase: с професором Марком Петровићем. Phrase-wide marking is useful redundancy, not needless repetition.
Adjectival male surnames in -ски/-чки decline like adjectives: Милош Црњански — Милоша Црњанског — с Милошем Црњанским. A feminine form such as Петровска declines as feminine only when that is the bearer’s actual surname form; Serbian does not automatically invent a feminine counterpart for every surname.
A consonant-final surname is normally unchanged for a woman
For a woman named Ана Петровић, the given name declines, but the consonant-final surname normally stays Петровић.
| Case | Full name |
|---|---|
| Nominative | Ана Петровић |
| Genitive | Ане Петровић |
| Dative/Locative | Ани Петровић |
| Accusative | Ану Петровић |
| Vocative | Ана Петровић |
| Instrumental | Аном Петровић |
Ани Петровић смо уручили награду на крају свечаности.
We presented Ana Petrović with the award at the end of the ceremony.
Интервју са Аном Петровић биће објављен сутра.
The interview with Ana Petrović will be published tomorrow.
Do not attach masculine endings to the surname merely because it ends in a consonant. The bearer’s gender and the surname’s established form matter. The changing given name—or a title such as са професорком Аном Петровић—still makes the case visible.
Foreign names: adaptation is normal, but not universal
In Serbian Cyrillic running text, foreign names are normally transcribed and then assigned Serbian case forms. Many male names decline: Хари — Харија — Харију — Харијем, Пабло — Пабла — Паблу, Шекспир — Шекспира. Masculine animacy makes accusative match genitive.
Харија смо упознали после представе, а с Паблом смо вечерали сутрадан.
We met Harry after the performance, and we had dinner with Pablo the next day.
Many foreign female names not ending in -а, such as Кармен, Инес, Мери, remain indeclinable. Agreement and apposition still carry case:
Нашој гошћи Кармен послали смо програм пре доласка.
We sent the program to our guest Carmen before her arrival.
By contrast, female names in -а normally decline: Софија — Софије — Софији — Софију — Софијом. Foreign origin is not itself a reason to leave a name unchanged.
The established Serbian transcription comes before the ending. Do not improvise a Cyrillic spelling from English letter values and then decline that invention. See foreign names in the writing system for transcription and indeclinable foreign nouns for broader noun patterns.
Place names carry case across the whole name
Place names decline according to their gender, number, and internal structure. A stationary location after у takes locative; a destination takes accusative; origin after из takes genitive.
| Name | Origin: из + genitive | Destination: у + accusative | Location: у + locative |
|---|---|---|---|
In the morning we’re traveling from Novi Sad to Banja Luka, and in the evening we’re staying in Banja Luka.
Both parts of Нови Сад and Бања Лука change. The plural name Сремски Карловци uses plural adjective and noun forms. This is why copying an unchanged map label into every sentence fails.
Из Сремских Карловаца смо се вратили преко Новог Сада.
We returned from Sremski Karlovci via Novi Sad.
Some foreign place names and exceptional domestic names have lexical patterns that must be checked. The productive system is strong, but the shape of a name—not its status as a name—determines the paradigm.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Track two people through three cases
Put Марко Јовановић and Ана Јовановић after без (genitive), позвати (accusative), and са (instrumental).
Без Марка Јовановића и Ане Јовановић не почињемо; позваћемо Марка Јовановића и Ану Јовановић; разговараћемо с Марком Јовановићем и Аном Јовановић.
We won’t start without Marko Jovanović and Ana Jovanović; we’ll invite Marko Jovanović and Ana Jovanović; we’ll talk with Marko Jovanović and Ana Jovanović.
Task 2: Change movement into location
Turn each destination into a stationary location.
Данас идемо у Нови Сад и Бању Луку; следеће недеље радимо у Новом Саду и Бањој Луци.
Today we’re going to Novi Sad and Banja Luka; next week we’re working in Novi Sad and Banja Luka.
Common Mistakes
Leaving a male name undeclined

✅ Јуче сам видео Марка испред факултета.
I saw Marko in front of the university yesterday.
Declining only one part of a male full name
❌ Разговарала сам с Марком Петровић после предавања.

✅ Позивницу смо послали Ани Петровић.
We sent the invitation to Ana Petrović.
Freezing every foreign female name
❌ Са Софија се виђам сваког четвртка.
Incorrect — Софија ends in -а and declines; instrumental is Софијом.
✅ Са Софијом се виђам сваког четвртка.
I see Sofia every Thursday.
Using a location form for a destination
❌ Сутра из Београда путујемо у Новом Саду.
