A Serbian place name is not a fixed label pasted into a sentence. Its ending normally tells the listener whether the place is a destination, a location, or a source: у Београд, у Београду, из Београда. The preposition also matters, because Serbian divides places between patterns with у and на.
English speakers must therefore learn two pieces together: the usual preposition and the case form. A map gives you the nominative; a sentence needs the form appropriate to the route.
The three-part route pattern
With most cities, countries, and enclosed places, use:
- из + genitive for source: from
- у + accusative for destination: to/into
- у + locative for stationary location: in/at
| Map form | Source | Destination | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Београд | из Београда | у Београд | у Београду |
| Нови Сад | из Новог Сада | у Нови Сад | у Новом Саду |
| Србија | из Србије | у Србију | у Србији |
| Немачка | из Немачке | у Немачку | у Немачкој |
| Сарајево | из Сарајева | у Сарајево | у Сарајеву |
После конференције у Новом Саду враћамо се у Београд.
After the conference in Novi Sad, we are returning to Belgrade.
Воз из Сарајева стиже у Београд нешто после осам.
The train from Sarajevo arrives in Belgrade shortly after eight.
Neuter names make the contrast through their endings: у Сарајево / у Сарајеву and у Краљево / у Краљеву. The first form is the destination; the second is the stationary location.
When places take на
Islands, mountains, some broad geographic areas, districts, public surfaces, institutions, and events often take на. For this pattern, the source normally uses са:
- са + genitive for source
- на + accusative for destination
- на + locative for location
| Place | Source | Destination | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Златибор | са Златибора | на Златибор | на Златибору |
| Копаоник | са Копаоника | на Копаоник | на Копаонику |
| Фрушка гора | са Фрушке горе | на Фрушку гору | на Фрушкој гори |
| Нови Београд | са Новог Београда | на Нови Београд | на Новом Београду |
У суботу идемо на Копаоник, а са Копаоника се враћамо у понедељак.
On Saturday we are going to Kopaonik, and we are returning from Kopaonik on Monday.
Нашли смо смештај на Фрушкој гори, близу пешачке стазе.
We found accommodation on Fruška Gora, near a hiking trail.
The distinction is partly semantic but also lexical. A mountain is conceptualized differently from a city, yet not every name can be predicted from physical geography. Learn у Војводини but на Златибору; у Нишу but на Новом Београду. Do not translate English in/on/at word by word.
Motion versus location
After either у or на, accusative presents a goal and locative presents a setting. The verb helps, but the case is decisive: радити у Београду is being there, whereas ићи у Београд is movement toward it.
Аутобус иде на Златибор, а моји родитељи већ чекају на Златибору.
The bus is going to Zlatibor, and my parents are already waiting on Zlatibor.
Преселила се у Ниш и сада ради у Нишу.
She moved to Niš and now works in Niš.
Motion occurring inside a place still takes locative if the place is the setting rather than the endpoint: шетамо у парку. For the broader case logic, see motion and direction.
Multiword names inflect as phrases
In a transparent Serbian multiword name, each declinable component normally agrees in case. Нови Сад becomes Новог Сада and Новом Саду; Бања Лука becomes Бање Луке, Бању Луку, Бањој Луци.
Из Бање Луке путујемо преко Новог Сада до Суботице.
From Banja Luka we are traveling via Novi Sad to Subotica.
Састанак је у Сремским Карловцима, а ручак је заказан у Новом Саду.
The meeting is in Sremski Karlovci, and lunch is scheduled in Novi Sad.
Plural names remain plural: Сремски Карловци — из Сремских Карловаца — у Сремске Карловце — у Сремским Карловцима. The plural locative ending -има is not optional.
Foreign place names adapt to Serbian
In Cyrillic text, foreign names are normally transcribed: Париз, Беч, Рим, Њујорк, Буенос Ајрес. Many then decline like Serbian nouns.
| Name | Source | Destination | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Париз | из Париза | у Париз | у Паризу |
| Беч | из Беча | у Беч | у Бечу |
| Рим | из Рима | у Рим | у Риму |
| Њујорк | из Њујорка | у Њујорк | у Њујорку |
| Буенос Ајрес | из Буенос Ајреса | у Буенос Ајрес | у Буенос Ајресу |
После две године у Паризу преселили су се у Беч.
After two years in Paris, they moved to Vienna.
Порука из Буенос Ајреса стигла је док је Марко био у Њујорку.
The message from Buenos Aires arrived while Marko was in New York.
Some components of foreign names remain unchanged even when another component carries the ending: Буенос remains fixed in Буенос Ајресу. Other imported names have less familiar or variable paradigms. There is no honest universal shortcut: use the established Serbian form and check a reliable Serbian dictionary or geographic register for an unfamiliar name. Foreign does not mean indeclinable, but neither should you attach a guessed ending to every visible word.
Adjective-based region names
Names and descriptions such as западна Србија, источна Србија, централна Србија contain an adjective agreeing with Србија. Both words change: у западној Србији, у источну Србију, из централне Србије.
Из источне Србије наставили смо пут ка Шумадији.
From eastern Serbia we continued our journey toward Šumadija.
Током лета обилазимо западну Србију, а у јесен радимо у централној Србији.
During the summer we tour western Serbia, and in the autumn we work in central Serbia.
Whether a directional adjective is capitalized depends on whether it is functioning as part of an established proper name or as an ordinary descriptive word. The case agreement is the same either way.
A route-note task
Read this itinerary as a compact map. Identify every source, destination, and stationary location.
У петак крећемо из Београда у Нови Сад; у суботу смо на Фрушкој гори, а у недељу се са Фрушке горе враћамо у Београд.
On Friday we leave Belgrade for Novi Sad; on Saturday we are on Fruška Gora, and on Sunday we return from Fruška Gora to Belgrade.
The paired prepositions are из—у for the cities and са—на for the mountain.
