Regions of Serbia and Their Names

The labels Београд, Војводина, Шумадија, западна Србија do not all name the same kind of unit. Belgrade is a city with its own administrative territory, Vojvodina is an autonomous province, Šumadija is a historical-geographic region, and western Serbia is a broad descriptive area whose boundary depends on context.

Grammatically, however, they all enter ordinary Serbian case phrases. This page gives the forms needed to read a map, describe a route, and say what is characteristic of an area.

For the broader source–destination–location system, see place names with cases and prepositions.

A map is not yet a sentence

Map labels normally appear in the nominative. Location after у takes locative, while movement toward a place takes accusative.

Војводинау Војводиниу Војводинувојвођански

Рођена је у Београду, а детињство је провела у Шумадији.

She was born in Belgrade and spent her childhood in Šumadija.

После два дана у Војводини путујемо у западну Србију.

After two days in Vojvodina, we are traveling to western Serbia.

The adjectives београдски, војвођански, шумадијски are lowercase in ordinary phrases: београдске улице, војвођанска села, шумадијски крај. The stem change in Војводина → војвођански is established and must be learned.

💡
Do not copy the nominative from a map. Learn Београд — у Београду, Војводина — у Војводини, and Шумадија — у Шумадији as pairs.

The same names in Cyrillic and Latin

Serbian Latin is a second standard script, not a pronunciation guide. The case endings and capitalization remain the same.

CyrillicLatinEnglish function
Београд — у БеоградуBeograd — u BeograduBelgrade — in Belgrade
Војводина — у ВојводиниVojvodina — u VojvodiniVojvodina — in Vojvodina

западна Србијаzapadna Srbijawestern Serbia
источна Србијаistočna Srbijaeastern Serbia
јужна Србијаjužna Srbijasouthern Serbia
централна Србијаcentralna Srbijacentral Serbia

Exact conversion preserves Š/ш, č/ч, ž/ж, j/ј. Forms such as Sumadija and istocna Srbija are ASCII approximations, not standard Serbian Latin spelling.

На путоказу пише „Šumadija“, а на нашој карти „Шумадија“; назив је исти, само је писмо друго.

The road sign says ‘Šumadija,’ while our map says ‘Шумадија’; the name is the same, only the script differs.

Belgrade as city and region

Београд is masculine. Its genitive is Београда, and its locative is Београду. The inhabitant nouns are Београђанин, Београђанка, Београђани; the adjective is београдски.

Београђанка нам је на мапи показала мрежу београдског јавног превоза.

A woman from Belgrade showed us the Belgrade public transport network on the map.

Из Београда крећемо рано, пре јутарње гужве.

We are leaving Belgrade early, before the morning rush.

Нови Београд is an urban municipality and district that normally takes на: на Новом Београду, на Нови Београд, са Новог Београда. This lexical preposition cannot be predicted from the English word in.

Vojvodina

Војводина is an autonomous province in northern Serbia and a historically multilingual region. Its basic case set is из Војводине — у Војводину — у Војводини.

У Војводини се на јавним таблама могу видети називи на више језика.

In Vojvodina, names in several languages can be seen on public signs.

Из Војводине смо наставили ка Београду ауто-путем.

From Vojvodina, we continued toward Belgrade by motorway.

The demonyms are Војвођанин and Војвођанка, and the adjective is војвођански. These can express regional affiliation, but they do not by themselves specify ethnicity or home language.

Она је Војвођанка и код куће говори словачки, а на послу српски.

She is a woman from Vojvodina and speaks Slovak at home and Serbian at work.

Šumadija

Шумадија is a historical-geographic region in central Serbia. It declines like Србија: из Шумадије, у Шумадију, у Шумадији. The adjective is шумадијски; a person can be called Шумадинац or Шумадинка.

Крагујевац се налази у Шумадији и важан је шумадијски град.

Kragujevac is in Šumadija and is an important city of the region.

За викенд идемо у Шумадију да обиђемо породицу и један манастир.

For the weekend we are going to Šumadija to visit family and a monastery.

The everyday phrase шумадијски град classifies the city by region. As with other relational adjectives in -ски, it is lowercase and agrees with its noun.

Western, eastern, southern, and central Serbia

Западна Србија, источна Србија, јужна Србија, централна Србија are useful geographic descriptions. They are not four parallel constitutional provinces, and their exact extent can vary with the topic—tourism, transport, statistics, history, or dialectology.

Both words inflect:

AreaSourceDestinationLocation
западна Србијаиз западне Србијеу западну Србијуу западној Србији
источна Србијаиз источне Србијеу источну Србијуу источној Србији
јужна Србијаиз јужне Србијеу јужну Србијуу јужној Србији
централна Србијаиз централне Србијеу централну Србијуу централној Србији

У источној Србији смо обишли Зајечар, а затим смо кренули у јужну Србију.

In eastern Serbia we visited Zaječar, and then we set off for southern Serbia.

Гости из западне Србије представили су локалне производе на сајму.

Guests from western Serbia presented local products at the fair.

Compound adjectives such as источносрпски occur, especially in geographic or linguistic classification, but everyday prose often prefers a transparent genitive phrase: градови источне Србије, говори јужне Србије. Do not force a compound when the phrase is clearer.

A spoken map description

Крећемо из Београда ка северу и стижемо у Војводину; затим се враћамо кроз Шумадију и настављамо према западној Србији.

We leave Belgrade heading north and arrive in Vojvodina; then we return through Šumadija and continue toward western Serbia.

This description is functional rather than administrative: ка/према + dative gives orientation, у + accusative gives a destination, and кроз + accusative describes a route through a region.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Convert the map labels to locations

Change Београд, Војводина, Шумадија, источна Србија into phrases answering где?

Састанци су у Београду и Војводини, а снимање је у Шумадији и источној Србији.

The meetings are in Belgrade and Vojvodina, while filming is in Šumadija and eastern Serbia.

Task 2: Convert one sentence into Latin script

Iz Vojvodine putujemo u Šumadiju, a zatim u Beograd.

From Vojvodina we are traveling to Šumadija and then to Belgrade. (standard Serbian Latin)

Notice Š, not plain S, in Šumadiju.

Common Mistakes

Leaving the adjective unchanged

❌ Провели смо недељу дана у западна Србија.

Incorrect — location requires locative agreement in both words: западној Србији.

✅ Провели смо недељу дана у западној Србији.

We spent a week in western Serbia.

Using the map form after у for location

❌ Моја тетка живи у Војводина.

Incorrect — stationary location requires locative Војводини.

✅ Моја тетка живи у Војводини.

My aunt lives in Vojvodina.

Inventing the adjective from Vojvodina

❌ На пијаци смо купили војводински сир.

Incorrect — the established relational adjective is војвођански.

✅ На пијаци смо купили војвођански сир.

At the market we bought cheese from Vojvodina.

Dropping Latin diacritics

❌ Sumadija je u centralnoj Srbiji.

Incorrect standard Latin spelling — Ш is Š, so the name is Šumadija.

✅ Šumadija je u centralnoj Srbiji.

Šumadija is in central Serbia.

Treating broad labels as fixed administrative borders

❌ Источна Србија је покрајина са једном непроменљивом границом.

Incorrect — eastern Serbia is a broad contextual geographic label, not an autonomous province.

✅ Назив „источна Србија“ може имати различит обухват у туризму, статистици и дијалектологији.

The term ‘eastern Serbia’ can have different coverage in tourism, statistics, and dialectology.

Key Takeaways

  • Use у Београду, у Војводини, у Шумадији for location and accusative forms for destinations.
  • Standard Latin preserves every Serbian diacritic: Šumadija, Vojvođanin, istočna Srbija.
  • Relational adjectives are lowercase: београдски, војвођански, шумадијски.
  • Broad directional labels are descriptive regions, not necessarily administrative units.
  • A regional label does not determine a person's ethnicity, language, or dialect.
