Vojvodina's Official Languages

Vojvodina is institutionally and socially multilingual. In the work of the provincial authorities, Serbian in Cyrillic is used officially alongside Hungarian, Slovak, Croatian, Romanian, and Rusyn, with their respective scripts, under the law. That province-wide framework does not mean that all six languages appear in exactly the same way in every municipality, school, office, or conversation. Local official use depends on law, local population, and the institution involved.

This page gives you the Serbian vocabulary and grammar needed to describe that multilingual public life accurately. It also draws an essential boundary: a language label describes language use, not a person's identity unless that person chooses the label.

Six Languages in the Provincial Framework

Serbian language names are normally lowercase. They behave like adverbs after verbs such as говорити to speak, писати to write, and читати to read.

EnglishSerbian language nameTypical script or scripts
Serbianсрпскићирилица; also латиница in wider public life
Hungarianмађарскилатиница
Slovakсловачкилатиница
Croatianхрватскилатиница
Romanianрумунскилатиница
Rusynрусинскићирилица

На шалтеру можете да добијете образац на српском и мађарском.

At the service counter, you can get the form in Serbian and Hungarian.

Она код куће говори словачки, а на послу најчешће српски.

At home she speaks Slovak, while at work she most often speaks Serbian.

Here на српском and на мађарском are locative forms of substantivized adjectives: literally, in Serbian and in Hungarian. After говорити, the bare adverbial form is also normal: говорити српски. English capitalizes Serbian and Hungarian; Serbian does not capitalize српски and мађарски when they name languages or function as adjectives.

💡
Keep three questions separate: Which language is being used? Which script is being used? Which identity term does the speaker use for themself? The answers do not automatically predict one another.

Province, Municipality, and Institution

Службени језик is an official language; службена употреба језика и писма is the official use of a language and script. In a legal or administrative context, равноправна службена употреба means equal official use within the scope defined by law. These expressions are (formal) and common in statutes, municipal notices, and public information.

У покрајинској управи више језика је у службеној употреби.

Several languages are in official use in the provincial administration.

Проверите на сајту општине на којим језицима можете да поднесете захтев.

Check the municipality's website to see in which languages you can submit an application.

The second sentence is deliberately specific. It asks what a particular municipality offers instead of assuming that every provincial language is available in every local office. Useful institutional vocabulary includes:

покрајински органprovincial authority (formal)
општинска управаmunicipal administration (formal)

двојезични образацbilingual form
вишејезично обавештењеmultilingual notice

судски тумач / судска тумачицаsworn court interpreter (formal)

Школа има одељења на српском и румунском језику.

The school has classes taught in Serbian and Romanian.

За овај поступак потребан је оверен превод код судског тумача.

For this procedure, a certified translation by a sworn court interpreter is required.

The full phrase на румунском језику is frequent in official prose. In ordinary conversation, на румунском is usually enough.

Inflecting Vojvodina and Its Place Names

Serbian marks location and movement through case endings. Војводина declines like a regular feminine noun:

MeaningFormCase
in Vojvodinaу Војводиниlocative
from Vojvodinaиз Војводинеgenitive
into Vojvodinaу Војводинуaccusative

У Војводини се на јавним местима могу видети различита писма.

In Vojvodina, different scripts can be seen in public places.

Multiword place names inflect internally. Нови Сад becomes у Новом Саду and из Новог Сада; Бачки Петровац becomes у Бачком Петровцу. Feminine Суботица gives у Суботици and из Суботице. See the fuller system on place names and cases.

У Бачком Петровцу постоји дуга традиција образовања на словачком.

In Bački Petrovac, there is a long tradition of education in Slovak.

Из Суботице су нам послали двојезично обавештење.

They sent us a bilingual notice from Subotica.

People, Languages, and Self-Identification

Names of peoples and individual identity nouns are capitalized: Мађар, Мађарица, Словак, Словакиња, Румун, Румунка, Русин, Русинка, Хрват, Хрватица, Србин, Српкиња. They decline, so са Мађарицом is instrumental and упознао сам Словака has the animate masculine accusative.

These nouns should be used only when the person's identity is relevant and known. Residence in Subotica, a surname, a home language, or the script someone chooses does not authorize you to assign them an ethnic identity.

Марија каже да је Русинка и да су јој важни и русински и српски.

Marija says that she is Rusyn and that both Rusyn and Serbian are important to her.

Не знам како се човек изјашњава; знам само да са баком говори мађарски.

I do not know how the person identifies; I only know that they speak Hungarian with their grandmother.

Other communities in Vojvodina also maintain languages and varieties, including Romani, Bunjevac, Ukrainian, Czech, German, and others. Their demographic presence, educational provision, cultural recognition, and official local status are separate questions. (regional: Vojvodina) A speaker may also use more than one community label or reject a label that an outsider expects.

Reading a Multilingual Notice

Imagine a notice at a municipal cultural center. The Serbian version might say:

Обавештења о програму доступна су на српском, мађарском и хрватском језику.

Information about the program is available in Serbian, Hungarian, and Croatian.

Ако вам је потребна помоћ на другом језику, обратите се инфо-пулту.

If you need assistance in another language, contact the information desk.

The first line uses доступна су because the subject обавештења is neuter plural. The languages follow на plus the locative. The second line uses formal but service-oriented обратите се. It promises help without claiming that every service is always available in every language.

💡
A multilingual sign is evidence that an institution communicates in those languages. It is not a map of what every passerby speaks, and it is not a reliable shortcut to anyone's nationality.

Common Mistakes

Capitalizing language names as in English

❌ У школи учи Мађарски.

Incorrect — the language name should not be capitalized in Serbian.

✅ У школи учи мађарски.

At school, she is learning Hungarian.

Leaving a Serbian place name uninflected

❌ Живе у Нови Сад.

Incorrect — a static location requires the locative form of both words.

✅ Живе у Новом Саду.

They live in Novi Sad.

Confusing a language with a person

❌ Петар је мађарски.

Incorrect — мађарски names the language or is an adjective, not the identity noun for a man.

✅ Петар говори мађарски, а изјашњава се као Мађар.

Petar speaks Hungarian and identifies as Hungarian.

Treating provincial status as identical local availability

❌ У свакој општини све услуге морају бити доступне на свих шест језика.

Incorrect — this overgeneralizes the provincial framework to every municipal service.

✅ Доступност услуга на различитим језицима проверава се код конкретне општине.

The availability of services in different languages is checked with the particular municipality.

Key Takeaways

  • The provincial framework includes Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, Croatian, Romanian, and Rusyn, but actual local services must be checked institution by institution.
  • Language names such as српски and мађарски are lowercase; identity nouns such as Српкиња and Мађар are capitalized and declined.
  • Inflect place names for location and direction: у Војводини, из Војводине, у Новом Саду.
  • Never infer a person's identity from their residence, name, script, or language use; use the labels speakers choose for themselves.

Practice

  1. A notice says that forms are available in Serbian and Slovak at a municipal office in Bački Petrovac. Write one sentence using у Бачком Петровцу, образац, and two locative language forms.
  2. Describe a person who lives in Subotica and uses Romanian at home, without assigning that person a nationality or ethnic identity.
  3. Change у Војводини to expressions meaning from Vojvodina and into Vojvodina, then write a natural sentence with each.
