Serbian uses у + locative and на + locative when a place is the setting in which someone or something is located. It uses the same prepositions with accusative when the place is a destination. The useful distinction is therefore not simply ‘motion versus no motion,’ but location versus entry into a goal.
English in, at, and on do not map mechanically onto у and на. Serbian first chooses the conventional preposition for the place—у школи, на факултету—and then locative marks that the relation already holds.
If the endings are not yet familiar, begin with locative forms and then return to the location contrasts here.
The Core Location Forms
| Gender/number | Base phrase | у/на + locative |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | нови хотел | у новом хотелу |
| feminine singular | мала продавница | у малој продавници |
| neuter singular | старо позориште | у старом позоришту |
| masculine plural | велики градови | у великим градовима |
| feminine plural | мирне улице | на мирним улицама |
| neuter plural | позната места | на познатим местима |
Одсели смо у новом хотелу близу железничке станице.
We stayed in a new hotel near the railway station.
У малој продавници на углу продају одличан хлеб.
They sell excellent bread in the small shop on the corner.
Case belongs to the whole phrase: новом хотелу, малој продавници. The preposition alone is not enough.
у: Inside, Within, and in a Place
У + locative commonly locates someone or something inside a bounded space, in a settlement or country, or within an institution understood as a place.
Документи су у горњој фиоци, испод плаве фасцикле.
The documents are in the top drawer, under the blue folder.
Моја рођака живи у Крагујевцу, али ради у Београду.
My cousin lives in Kragujevac but works in Belgrade.
Деца су у школи до пола четири.
The children are at school until half past three.
English says at school, while Serbian uses у школи. Translate the location as a Serbian lexical phrase rather than choosing from the English preposition.
на: Surface, Event, Institution, and Conventional Place
На + locative marks physical contact with a surface and many conventional locations, activities, events, and institutions.
Рачун је на кухињском столу поред телефона.
The bill is on the kitchen table next to the phone.
Ана је на послу, а Марко је на факултету.
Ana is at work, and Marko is at university.
Синоћ смо на концерту срели старе пријатеље.
Last night we met old friends at the concert.
The institution phrases на послу, на факултету and event phrase на концерту are lexical conventions. They do not mean that someone is literally on top of anything.
Location Does Not Mean Absence of Motion
A motion verb can still take locative when movement unfolds within the place rather than ending there.
Пливачи већ пола сата тренирају у затвореном базену.
The swimmers have been training in the indoor pool for half an hour.
Сваког јутра трчимо на стадиону пре посла.
Every morning we run at the stadium before work.
The swimmers and runners move, but the pool and stadium are settings. Compare the destination:
После загревања пливачи су ушли у затворени базен.
After warming up, the swimmers entered the indoor pool. (accusative destination)
После доручка смо отрчали на стадион.
After breakfast, we ran to the stadium. (accusative destination)
The accusative phrase answers ‘where to?’; locative answers ‘where does the event occur?’
Minimal Pairs: Same Place, Different Relation
Ставила је лекове у малу торбу.
She put the medicine into the small bag. (accusative goal)
Лекови су у малој торби.
The medicine is in the small bag. (locative position)
Окачио је календар на бели зид.
He hung the calendar on the white wall. (accusative goal)
Календар виси на белом зиду.
The calendar is hanging on the white wall. (locative position)
The verb often supports the interpretation—ставити, окачити create a location; бити, лежати, висити describe it—but the case expresses the relation.
Choosing у versus на
Physical geometry gives a useful starting point, but convention matters.
| Typical у | Typical на |
|---|---|
| у кући, у соби, у продавници | на столу, на полици, на крову |
| у школи, у болници, у банци | на послу, на факултету, на курсу |
| у Србији, у Нишу, у селу | на мору, на селу, на планини |
| у биоскопу, у позоришту | на концерту, на утакмици |
Током недеље живе у граду, а викендом су на селу.
During the week they live in the city, and on weekends they are in the countryside.
У селу means in a particular village; на селу commonly means in the countryside or rural setting. The noun is the same, but the construal differs.
Деца се купају у мору, а родитељи читају на обали.
The children are swimming in the sea, while the parents are reading on the shore.
На мору generally means at the seaside/on a seaside holiday, whereas у мору locates someone or something in the water.
Institutional versus Physical Readings
Some nouns change preposition with the intended viewpoint. На факултету normally means at university as an institution. У згради факултета explicitly means inside its building.
Предавање је на факултету, у сали на трећем спрату.
The lecture is at the university, in a hall on the third floor.
Similarly, на суду means at/in court as an institution, while у згради суда identifies the building. This is a semantic choice, not random memorization.
Locative versus Other Static Cases
Only у and на are the focus here. English static under, in front of, between, and behind use Serbian под, пред, међу, and за + instrumental, not locative.
Бицикл је у гаражи, а кацига је под седиштем.
The bicycle is in the garage, and the helmet is under the seat.
У гаражи is locative; под седиштем is instrumental. The shared English question ‘where?’ does not force one Serbian case.
Syncretism with Dative
Остајемо у новом насељу до понедељка.
We are staying in the new neighborhood until Monday. (locative after у)
Приближавамо се новом насељу са северне стране.
We are approaching the new neighborhood from the north. (dative after приближавати се)
The form новом насељу is identical. Preposition and governor reveal the case.
Task 1: Location or Destination?
Choose locative for the setting and accusative for the endpoint.
Туристи су цео дан разгледали знаменитости у старом граду.
The tourists saw the sights in the old city all day. (location: locative)
Туристи су после ручка отишли у стари град.
After lunch, the tourists went to the old city. (destination: accusative)
Деца се играју на великом игралишту.
The children are playing in the large playground. (location: locative)
Task 2: Choose у or на
Use the conventional phrase, then form the locative.
школа → у школи; посао → на послу; концерт → на концерту
school → at school; work → at work; concert → at the concert
Позив је у фиоци, а распоред је на огласној табли.
The invitation is in the drawer, and the schedule is on the noticeboard.
Common Mistakes
Using accusative merely because the verb describes movement
❌ Деца сатима трче у парк.
Incorrect for running within the park — accusative makes the park the destination.
✅ Деца сатима трче у парку.
The children run in the park for hours.
Translating English at directly
❌ Студира у факултету, а вечерас учи на библиотеци.
Incorrect — the conventional phrases are na fakultetu and u biblioteci.
✅ Студира на факултету, а вечерас учи у библиотеци.
She studies at university, and tonight she is studying in the library.
Using the destination case for a countryside location
❌ Моја бака живи на село, али често долази у град.
Incorrect — static location requires the locative na selu, not the accusative na selo.
✅ Моја бака живи на селу, али често долази у град.
My grandmother lives in the countryside but often comes to the city.
Declining only the noun
❌ Кључеви су у црвена торби.
Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the feminine locative noun.
✅ Кључеви су у црвеној торби.
The keys are in the red bag.
Using locative after под
❌ Кутија је под кревету.
Incorrect — static под governs instrumental.
✅ Кутија је под креветом.
The box is under the bed.
