Serbian у and на each combine with two cases. With accusative, they normally construe a destination or a new relationship: у канцеларију “into/to the office,” на терасу “onto/to the terrace.” With locative, they construe an existing setting: у канцеларији, на тераси. Case answers “goal or setting?”; the choice between у and на depends on physical geometry, convention, and the meaning intended for a place.
The core contrast
| Preposition | Accusative: goal/change | Locative: existing setting |
|---|---|---|
| у | у нову продавницу | у новој продавници |
| на | на главни трг | на главном тргу |
| у | у мало село | у малом селу |
| на | на високу полицу | на високој полици |
Ушли смо у нову продавницу, али у новој продавници нисмо нашли тражени модел.
We went into the new shop, but in the new shop we did not find the model we wanted.
Постави вазу на високу полицу; на нижој полици нема места.
Put the vase on the high shelf; there is no room on the lower shelf.
The noun ending does not always reveal the case by itself. Masculine inanimate accusative трг looks like nominative; the goal meaning and на identify its function. Phrase-wide agreement often makes the contrast clearer: на главни трг versus на главном тргу.
У: containment, interiors, and many places
The spatial prototype of у is inclusion inside a bounded space. It extends to cities, countries, rooms, buildings, and many institutions conceptualized as places.
| Destination | Location |
|---|---|
| у стан | у стану |
| у банку | у банци |
| у школу | у школи |
| у Нови Сад | у Новом Саду |
| у Србију | у Србији |
Следећег месеца се селимо у Нови Сад, а сада живимо у Суботици.
Next month we're moving to Novi Sad; at present we live in Subotica.
Док су деца у школи, родитељи ће отићи у банку.
While the children are at school, the parents will go to the bank.
English says at school and to the bank, but neither English preposition chooses the Serbian one. The conventional Serbian phrases are у школи / у школу and у банци / у банку.
На: surfaces, open settings, events, and activities
The concrete prototype of на is contact with or support by a surface. It also extends conventionally to open areas, events, activities, and some institutions.
| Destination | Location |
|---|---|
| на кров | на крову |
| на пијацу | на пијаци |
| на посао | на послу |
| на концерт | на концерту |
| на факултет | на факултету |
После предавања идемо на концерт, а Милена је већ на концерту са својим братом.
After the lecture we're going to the concert, and Milena is already at the concert with her brother.
Мајстор се попео на кров и сада пажљиво хода по крову.
The repairman climbed onto the roof and is now walking carefully across it.
In the second example, на кров is the endpoint of climbing. Once the roof is the area over which movement unfolds, по крову is a natural distributed-path expression. A motion verb therefore does not automatically keep на + accusative.
Motion inside a setting still uses locative
The popular rule “motion means accusative” is wrong. Accusative marks the endpoint named by у/на; locative marks the setting even when the subject runs, swims, or drives within it.
Туристи шетају у старом делу града, а касније ће отићи у нови музеј.
The tourists are walking in the old part of the city, and later they will go to the new museum.
Деца се санкају на брду, а затим трче на оближње игралиште.
The children are sledding on the hill and then running to the nearby playground.
The first place in each sentence is a setting, so it takes locative. The second is a destination, so it takes accusative. The verb alone cannot decide the case.
Choosing у or на is partly lexical
Geometry is a starting point, not a complete algorithm. Serbian conventions associate some institutions and activities with у, others with на.
| Usually у | Usually на |
|---|---|
| у школи, у библиотеци, у болници | на факултету, на послу, на курсу |
| у биоскопу, у позоришту | на концерту, на утакмици, на изложби |
| у граду, у селу | на селу, на мору, на планини |
Филм гледамо у биоскопу, а о филму ћемо разговарати на курсу у понедељак.
We're watching the film at the cinema, and we'll discuss it in class on Monday.
For a person’s place, Serbian often uses код + genitive, not either у or на.
После анализе у лабораторији идем код лекара по резултате.
After the test at the laboratory, I'm going to the doctor to collect the results.
The choice guide for у and на develops lexical place classes; this page keeps the case contrast in view.
When both prepositions change the viewpoint
Some nouns allow both forms with different meanings. У селу means in a particular village; на селу means in the countryside. У мору means in the water; на мору means at the seaside or on a seaside stay.
Тетка живи у селу близу Ужица, а ми лети проводимо викенде на селу.
My aunt lives in a village near Užice, and in summer we spend weekends in the countryside.
Док су рониоци били у мору, њихове породице су их чекале на обали.
While the divers were in the sea, their families waited for them on shore.
На мору смо would normally mean “we are at the seaside,” not necessarily in the water. These are semantic contrasts, not interchangeable regional decoration.
Time expressions
Spatial у and на extend into time through established frames. Learn the whole expression because the case does not follow a single English rule.
| Frame | Use |
|---|---|
| у пет сати | clock time |
| у понедељак | day as a scheduled time |
| у јануару | month as a temporal container |
| на почетку / на крају | at the beginning/end |
| на време | on time |
Састанак почиње у понедељак у девет, а молим вас дођите на време.
The meeting starts on Monday at nine; please arrive on time.
Accusative у понедељак and у девет are conventional temporal uses, not physical destinations. Locative у јануару treats the month as a containing period. The meaning of a case-preposition construction extends beyond its spatial prototype.
Abstract and verb-selected frames
Frequent nonspatial frames include учествовати у + locative, уживати у + locative, мислити на + accusative, утицати на + accusative, and рачунати на + accusative.
Учествујемо у новом пројекту и рачунамо на подршку локалних фирми.
We're participating in a new project and counting on support from local companies.
Ова промена ће утицати на све који раде у производњи.
This change will affect everyone who works in production.
The accusative after на in утицати на is not a spatial goal. It is lexical government. Do not switch to locative because the affected group is not moving.
Source completes the place set
For many places, store a destination–location–source set. У-places usually pair with source из + genitive; на-places usually pair with са + genitive.
| Destination | Location | Source |
|---|---|---|
| у канцеларију | у канцеларији | из канцеларије |
| на посао | на послу | с посла |
| на факултет | на факултету | са факултета |
Из канцеларије одлазим на састанак, а са састанка се враћам право кући.
From the office I'm going to a meeting, and from the meeting I'm returning straight home.
This pairing is a strong learning aid, not a license to guess every unusual place. Check conventional phrases as complete units.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Goal or setting?
Describe running inside a stadium and then running to a sports hall. Use locative for the setting and accusative for the endpoint, even though both clauses contain motion.
Task 2: Build a three-way place set
Create destination, location, and source phrases for school, work, and concert. Choose у/из or на/са as Serbian requires and inflect every modifier in “new school” and “important concert.”
Common Mistakes
❌ Сутра имамо предавање у факултету.
Incorrect conventional choice — Serbian normally says на факултету for the institution.
✅ Сутра имамо предавање на факултету.
Tomorrow we have a lecture at the university.
❌ Чекам те у главну салу.
Incorrect — waiting occurs in an existing setting, so у requires locative у главној сали.
✅ Чекам те у главној сали.
I'm waiting for you in the main hall.
❌ После вечере идемо на концерту.
Incorrect — the concert is the destination, so на requires accusative концерт.
✅ После вечере идемо на концерт.
After dinner we're going to the concert.
❌ Пливају у море већ двадесет минута.
Incorrect for swimming within the water — the sea is the setting and requires locative мору.
✅ Пливају у мору већ двадесет минута.
They've been swimming in the sea for twenty minutes.
❌ Идем у мојој сестри после посла.
Incorrect — a person visited is normally expressed with код + genitive, not у + locative.
✅ Идем код моје сестре после посла.
I'm going to my sister's after work.
Key Takeaways
- У/на + accusative normally construe a destination or newly created relation; у/на + locative construe an existing setting.
- Motion inside a place still uses locative; the endpoint relation, not motion alone, selects accusative.
- Choose у or на through Serbian convention and intended viewpoint, then choose the case.
- Learn useful sets such as у школу — у школи — из школе and на посао — на послу — с посла.
- Temporal, abstract, and verb-selected uses are fixed extensions and must be learned as constructions.
