s/sa: With, Off, From

Serbian с/са belongs to two major constructions. With instrumental, it means “with” in accompaniment or association: с колегом. With genitive, it marks a source “from/off,” especially from a surface or a place paired with на: са стола, с посла. The longer form са helps pronunciation; it does not select a different meaning or case by itself.

The central split

ConstructionCore relationModel phrases
с/са + instrumentalcompanion, association, accompanying featureс пријатељем, са сестром, кафа с млеком
с/са + genitivesource from a surface or на-placeса стола, с посла, са концерта
bare instrumentaltool, vehicle, meansножем, аутобусом, оловком

Са планине смо се вратили с двојицом искусних водича.

We returned from the mountain with two experienced guides.

The first phrase са планине is genitive source; the second с двојицом искусних водича is instrumental accompaniment. Identical preposition spelling does not make the cases identical.

💡
Ask “where from?” versus “together with whom/what?” Source takes genitive; accompaniment takes instrumental. Then ask whether English with really means “using”—means usually takes bare instrumental.

Accompaniment: с/са + instrumental

A person or animal participating alongside the subject appears with с/са + instrumental. This construction also complements many social and reciprocal verbs.

Base formAccompaniment phrase
стари другса старим другом
нова колегиницас новом колегиницом
мало детеса малим дететом
добри суседис добрим суседима

На изложбу долазим са старим другом који се бави фотографијом.

I'm coming to the exhibition with an old friend who works in photography.

Директорка се састала с представницима запослених пре почетка смене.

The director met with the employees' representatives before the shift began.

Frequent verb frames include разговарати с, састати се с, слагати се с, дружити се с, and упознати се с + instrumental. English may use to, with, or no preposition at all; Serbian government remains its own system.

Не слажем се с вашим закључком, али разумем како сте до њега дошли.

I don't agree with your conclusion, but I understand how you reached it.

The companion phrase does not automatically become part of the subject. Compare singular head subject with true coordination:

Милица је са братом стигла пре осталих, а Јован и Ана су дошли касније.

Milica arrived with her brother before the others, while Jovan and Ana came later.

Милица controls feminine singular је стигла; са братом is accompaniment. Јован и Ана is a coordinated plural subject and controls су дошли.

Association, contents, and manner

The associated participant need not be animate. С/са + instrumental can describe contents, an accompanying ingredient, a possession, or an attendant manner.

Наручила је чај с лимуном и сендвич са печеним поврћем.

She ordered tea with lemon and a sandwich with roasted vegetables.

На врата је изашао човек са великим црним кишобраном.

A man with a large black umbrella came to the door.

Предлог је прихватила са осмехом, али је затражила још један дан за одлуку.

She accepted the proposal with a smile but asked for one more day to decide.

These meanings extend the notion of something present alongside the main participant. They are not tools used to perform the verb.

Tools and transport: usually no с/са

English with often introduces an instrument. Serbian normally uses a bare instrumental for tools, body parts used as means, vehicles, and channels.

The complete contrast between companion and means is developed on Instrumental: Means and Accompaniment.

MeaningSerbian
write with a pencilписати оловком
cut with a knifeсећи ножем
travel by trainпутовати возом
send by emailпослати електронском поштом

До Сремских Карловаца смо путовали возом са групом студената.

We traveled to Sremski Karlovci by train with a group of students.

Возом is the means of transport and has no preposition. Са групом студената is accompaniment. The same contrast applies to possession versus use:

Ушао је са малим ножем у џепу, а касније је тим ножем отворио пакет.

He came in with a small knife in his pocket and later opened the package with that knife.

The first knife accompanies him; the second is the tool.

Source: с/са + genitive

Source с/са has a concrete prototype “off a surface,” and it regularly reverses destination/location на.

DestinationLocationSource
на стона столуса стола
на посаона послус посла
на факултетна факултетуса факултета
на концертна концертуса концерта
на морена морус мора

Склони чаше са стола пре него што донесемо вечеру.

Remove the glasses from the table before we bring dinner.

Вратила се с факултета касно јер је после предавања имала консултације.

She returned from the university late because she had office hours after the lecture.

Source case is genitive across the phrase: са великог стола, с новог посла, са важног састанка.

💡
Store common places as round trips: на посао — на послу — с посла, на концерт — на концерту — са концерта. This is more reliable than translating English from.

Choosing among из, са, and од

English from divides according to the Serbian source perspective.

For the wider source system and other genitive prepositions, see Genitive after Prepositions.

Source prepositionPrototypeModel pairing
из + genitiveout of an interior or у-placeу канцеларију → из канцеларије
са + genitiveoff a surface or away from a на-placeна састанак → са састанка
од + genitiveaway from a person, sender, or reference pointкод зубара → од зубара

Из канцеларије сам отишла на састанак, а са састанка право код зубара.

I left the office for a meeting, and from the meeting I went straight to the dentist. (female speaker)

Управо се враћам од сестре и носим колач који ми је дала.

I'm just coming back from my sister's and carrying a cake she gave me.

Do not use са сестре for leaving a person’s home simply because са can mean “from.” The location pairing код сестре → од сестре controls the neutral choice.

Choosing с or са

Both are standard forms of the same preposition. Са is used before words beginning with с, з, ш, ж, in fixed са мном, and where the vowel breaks a difficult consonant cluster. Short с is neutral before many other forms. Everyday speech also uses са more broadly without changing case or meaning.

Short formLong form
с братом, с колегом, с тобомса сестром, са шефом, са мном
с посла, с концертаса стола, са зида, са железничке станице

Са шефом сам разговарао кратко, а с колегом сам касније детаљно прошао кроз план.

I spoke briefly with the manager, and later I went through the plan in detail with my colleague. (male speaker)

The difference is phonological convenience, not formality and not a new preposition. Do not infer instrumental from с or genitive from са.

Pronouns and fixed frames

Personal pronouns after с/са use full instrumental forms: са мном, с тобом, с њим, с њом, с нама, с вама, с њима. Clitics cannot follow the preposition.

Пођи са мном, а касније ћемо се наћи с њима испред позоришта.

Come with me; later we'll meet them in front of the theater.

Frequent larger frames include у вези са + instrumental, у складу са + instrumental, с обзиром на + accusative, and discourse pair с једне стране … с друге стране.

У складу са новим правилима, пријаве се шаљу искључиво електронским путем.

In accordance with the new rules, applications are submitted exclusively electronically. (formal)

These are fixed constructions; their English translations do not predict every Serbian element.

Temporal and discourse extensions

Instrumental с временом and с годинама construes time as something accompanying a gradual change. English normally uses over time or with age, not literal with.

С временом смо научили да проблеме решавамо пре него што постану хитни.

Over time, we learned to solve problems before they became urgent.

С годинама је постао стрпљивији према људима који раде спорије.

With age, he became more patient with people who work more slowly.

Fixed с времена на време means “from time to time.” The discourse frame с једне стране … с друге стране organizes two viewpoints and is common in careful speech and writing.

С једне стране, понуда је повољна; с друге стране, рок је сувише кратак.

On the one hand, the offer is favorable; on the other hand, the deadline is too short.

These expressions are best learned intact. Their modern meanings are conventional extensions and do not license replacing other Serbian temporal or discourse prepositions with с/са.

Mini-narrative

Са станице смо кренули с локалним водичем, до центра стигли трамвајем, а затим сели у кафић са баштом.

From the station we set off with a local guide, reached the center by tram, and then sat down in a café with a garden.

The narrative contains genitive source са станице, instrumental companion с локалним водичем, bare instrumental means трамвајем, and associative са баштом.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Source, companion, or means?

Translate from the roof, with the engineer, and with a screwdriver. Choose genitive с/са, instrumental с/са, or bare instrumental, and explain the semantic role.

Task 2: Build round trips

Give destination, location, and source phrases for work, concert, and faculty. Then add a companion to each source sentence without changing the source case.

Common Mistakes

❌ Отворио је кутију са одвијачем.

Incorrect for the tool reading in neutral standard Serbian — an instrument normally takes bare instrumental.

✅ Отворио је кутију одвијачем.

He opened the box with a screwdriver.

❌ На пут идем мојим најбољим другом.

Incorrect — a companion requires с/са + instrumental.

✅ На пут идем с мојим најбољим другом.

I'm going on the trip with my best friend.

❌ Вратила се са новој колегиници.

Incorrect — accompaniment requires instrumental новом колегиницом, not dative/locative новој колегиници.

✅ Вратила се с новом колегиницом.

She came back with a new colleague.

❌ Књига је пала из стола.

Incorrect source perspective — movement off a surface uses са + genitive.

✅ Књига је пала са стола.

The book fell off the table.

❌ Разговараћу с њу после ручка.

Incorrect — after the preposition, feminine instrumental requires the full form њом.

✅ Разговараћу с њом после ручка.

I'll speak with her after lunch.

Key Takeaways

  • С/са + instrumental marks accompaniment and association; с/са + genitive marks a source from a surface or на-place.
  • Tools, vehicles, and other means normally use bare instrumental, without с/са.
  • Pair на destinations and locations with са sources; contrast у/из and код/од.
  • Choose с or са for pronunciation, not for case or meaning.
  • After the preposition, use full pronoun forms such as са мном, с њом, с њима.
