Instrumental: Means and Accompaniment

Serbian draws a clear line between means and accompaniment. A tool, vehicle, channel, or bodily means normally appears in the instrumental without a preposition: возом “by train,” ножем “with a knife.” A companion or associated participant takes с(а) + instrumental: с пријатељем “with a friend.”

English often uses with for both relations, so translating word by word produces one of the most persistent learner errors: adding с(а) before a tool. The Serbian contrast is conceptual. A means helps carry out the action; a companion participates alongside someone or something.

Forms inside the two constructions

The case endings are the same whether the phrase expresses means or accompaniment. The presence or absence of с(а) distinguishes the two central frames.

TypeMeans: bare instrumentalAccompaniment: с(а) + instrumental
masculine singularбрзим возомса старим другом
feminine singularоштром оловкомс новом колегиницом
neuter singularслужбеним возиломса малим дететом
masculine/neuter pluralелектричним алатимас добрим пријатељима
feminine pluralобема рукамаса старијим сестрама

All modifiers agree with the noun. The plural forms overlap with dative and locative, so the construction—not -има or -ама alone—identifies instrumental. Review the morphology on Instrumental: Forms.

До аеродрома смо стигли службеним возилом.

We reached the airport in a company vehicle.

На конференцију сам дошла са новим колегиницама из Ниша.

I came to the conference with new colleagues from Niš.

💡
Use this first-pass test: if the noun could independently take part in the outing or conversation, use с(а); if it answers “by what means?” or “using what?”, use the bare instrumental.

Tools and implements: bare instrumental

A physical tool used to perform an action takes instrumental without с(а). This includes implements, writing materials, devices, and body parts used as means.

Пажљиво је отворио кутију малим ножем.

He carefully opened the box with a small knife.

Запишите адресу плавом хемијском оловком.

Write down the address with a blue ballpoint pen.

Махнула нам је руком са друге стране улице.

She waved to us from the other side of the street.

Adding с(а) would recast the noun as accompanying or attached rather than as the instrument. A person can arrive са ножем “with a knife” in their possession, but open a package ножем “using a knife.”

Ушао је у радионицу са старим чекићем у руци.

He entered the workshop with an old hammer in his hand.

Савио је лим старим чекићем.

He bent the sheet metal with an old hammer.

The first phrase describes an accompanying object; the second makes the hammer the means. The noun has the same case, but the relation changes.

Transport, channel, and language as means

Vehicles commonly take bare instrumental when they express how someone travels: аутобусом, возом, авионом, бициклом. With walking, Serbian normally uses the adverb пешке, not an instrumental noun. Communication channels and languages can also be construed as means.

Кад не пада киша, на посао идем бициклом.

When it isn't raining, I go to work by bicycle.

Са гостима смо разговарали српским језиком, а са преводиоцем енглеским.

We spoke Serbian with the guests and English with the interpreter.

In everyday speech, на српском is also common for “in Serbian.” The instrumental српским језиком explicitly construes the language as the medium and is especially natural in formal descriptions. Both are standard; they package the relation differently.

English by is not a universal signal for instrumental. A passive agent is normally expressed by an active Serbian sentence or, in (formal) administrative prose, by од стране + genitive. Do not create a bare instrumental agent merely because English says “by the director.”

Material, manner, and cause at the edge of “means”

The instrumental extends from concrete tools to a manner or resource through which a result is achieved. Expressions such as стрпљењем “through patience” and заједничким радом “through joint work” remain bare because they answer how the result came about.

Проблем су решили стрпљењем и заједничким радом.

They solved the problem through patience and joint effort.

Сала је украшена папирним цвећем које су направила деца.

The hall is decorated with paper flowers made by the children.

Not every English with phrase belongs here. Serbian often chooses a prepositional phrase, an adverb, or another case according to the relationship. Learn these extensions through common collocations rather than assuming that any abstract “means” must be instrumental.

Human and animal companions

Use с(а) + instrumental for people or animals accompanying the subject. The construction also occurs after reciprocal or social verbs such as разговарати с “talk with,” састати се с “meet with,” дружити се с “socialize with,” and упознати се с “meet/get acquainted with.”

После посла идем на вечеру с пријатељима из факултетских дана.

After work, I'm going to dinner with friends from my university days.

Директорка се јутрос састала са представницима синдиката.

The director met with union representatives this morning.

У парк увек водимо пса са собом.

We always take the dog with us to the park.

The reflexive pronoun is собом, and it refers back to the subject. Personal pronouns use forms such as са мном, с тобом, с њом, and с њима.

Association, contents, and accompanying features

The companion need not be animate. С(а) + instrumental can link an item to its contents, an accompanying ingredient, or a characteristic object: кафа с млеком, сендвич са сиром, човек са шеширом. The associated item is present alongside or as part of the head noun; it is not the tool performing an action.

За доручак обично узмем кафу с млеком и сендвич са сиром.

For breakfast, I usually have coffee with milk and a cheese sandwich.

На рецепцији нас је дочекао човек са црвеном фасциклом.

A man with a red folder met us at reception.

This construction can compete with a compound or adjective in established names, but the case relation itself remains ordinary accompaniment/association.

Choosing с or са

Both forms belong to standard Serbian. Са is required before words beginning in с, з, ш, or ж and in the fixed combination са мном. It is also available to ease other difficult consonant clusters. Before many other words, shorter с is neutral: с братом, с колегом, с тобом. In spontaneous speech, са also appears more broadly.

FormNatural examplesReason
сс братом, с колегом, с тобомsimple consonant contact
саса сестром, са шефом, са мномavoids difficult or identical sounds; fixed with мном

Са сестром сам се договорила да кренемо раније.

My sister and I agreed to leave earlier.

С колегом ћу проверити све бројеве пре састанка.

I'll check all the figures with my colleague before the meeting.

💡
The vowel in са does not change the governed case. Choose с/са for pronunciation, then still build an instrumental phrase.

С(а) plus instrumental versus с(а) plus genitive

The same written preposition has a second function: with genitive it means from/off and marks a source. Case endings and meaning distinguish the two constructions.

Вратила се с тренинга са новом саиграчицом.

She came back from practice with a new teammate.

The first са тренинга is genitive source; the second са новом саиграчицом is instrumental accompaniment. This is a genuine minimal contrast inside one natural sentence.

Склонио је лаптоп са стола и изашао с колегиницом.

He removed the laptop from the table and left with his colleague.

Са стола is genitive “off the table”; с колегиницом is instrumental “with a colleague.” See с/са: with versus from for the full prepositional contrast.

Accompaniment does not control subject agreement

A phrase introduced by с(а) is not automatically a second subject. With Марко са Аном, neutral agreement follows head subject Марко; coordination with и creates a plural subject.

Марко је дошао са Аном нешто после осам.

Marko arrived with Ana a little after eight.

Марко и Ана су дошли нешто после осам.

Marko and Ana arrived a little after eight.

The first foregrounds Marko and presents Ana as companion; the second coordinates them as equal members of the subject. The case choice therefore also packages a discourse choice.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding с(а) before a vehicle used as means.

❌ До Земуна идемо са аутобусом.

Incorrect in standard Serbian for transport — a vehicle used as means takes bare instrumental.

✅ До Земуна идемо аутобусом, па настављамо пешке.

We're going to Zemun by bus and then continuing on foot.

2. Omitting с(а) before a companion.

❌ На концерт идем најбољом другарицом.

Incorrect — a companion requires с(а) plus instrumental.

✅ На концерт идем с најбољом другарицом.

I'm going to the concert with my best friend.

3. Using genitive after accompaniment са.

❌ Разговарао сам са новог клијента после презентације.

Incorrect — accompaniment/interlocutor са governs instrumental.

✅ Разговарао сам са новим клијентом после презентације.

I spoke with the new client after the presentation.

4. Making the verb plural because a companion is present.

❌ Јелена је са братом стигли први.

Incorrect — singular auxiliary је cannot combine here with a plural participle and predicate adjective.

✅ Јелена је са братом стигла прва.

Jelena arrived first with her brother.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: One object, two relations

Explain why the same noun appears once with and once without са.

Петар је дошао са новим фотоапаратом и снимио нас новим фотоапаратом.

Petar arrived with a new camera and photographed us with the new camera.

Answer: the first phrase presents the camera as an accompanying possession. The second presents it as the means used to take the photograph. Both are instrumental, but only accompaniment takes са.

Task 2: Separate source and companion

Identify the cases in the two с(а) phrases.

Са планине смо се вратили с искусним водичем.

We returned from the mountain with an experienced guide.

Answer: са планине is genitive source; с искусним водичем is instrumental accompaniment.

Key Takeaways

Use bare instrumental for tools, vehicles, channels, body parts used as means, and many manner expressions. Use с(а) + instrumental for companions, associated objects, and complements of social verbs. Choose с versus са by pronunciation, distinguish accompaniment from genitive source, and remember that a companion phrase does not by itself create plural subject agreement.
