Instrumental Uses at a Glance

The Serbian instrumental presents a noun phrase as a means, companion, route, setting, repeated time, or predicative role. English usually relies on words such as with, by, through, or as, but Serbian does not simply assign one case to each of those prepositions. The crucial beginner contrast is structural: a tool or means normally uses the instrumental without с(а), while a companion uses с(а) plus the instrumental.

This page is a map for recognizing those relationships. It deliberately leaves full ending classes and the fine details of individual predicates to instrumental forms and the two dedicated usage chapters.

The forms at a glance

Modifiers agree with the instrumental noun in gender, number, and case. Representative phrases show the most useful patterns:

TypeSingularPluralWhat to notice
masculineновим телефономновим телефонимаmodifier -им; noun commonly -ом/-ем
feminine in -ановом картицомновим картицамаnoun -ом in the singular
feminine in a consonantвеликом љубављувеликим љубавимаsingular may have an expanded -ју form
neuterновим возиломновим возилимаmodifier matches masculine instrumental

In the plural, instrumental forms normally coincide with dative and locative forms. The preposition or predicate—not the ending alone—reveals the case. Compare a companion after са with a recipient after дати: the phrase новим колегама can have either function.

Путујем са новим колегама на сајам књига.

I'm traveling with my new colleagues to the book fair.

Новим колегама послали смо распоред обуке.

We sent the new colleagues the training schedule.

The first phrase is instrumental accompaniment; the second is a dative recipient. Syncretism hides morphology but not syntax.

💡
When a plural form ends in -има or -ама, postpone naming the case until you find its governor. The same visible form can be dative, instrumental, or locative.

Means and instrument: no preposition

A tool, vehicle, language of communication, or other means commonly appears in the bare instrumental. The noun answers “by means of what?” Serbian therefore says the equivalent of “I am traveling train,” not са возом. Adding с(а) changes the relation toward accompaniment.

До Новог Сада најчешће путујемо брзим возом.

We usually travel to Novi Sad by fast train.

Потписала је образац плавом хемијском оловком.

She signed the form with a blue ballpoint pen.

Са клијентима разговарамо српским или енглеским језиком.

We speak with clients in Serbian or English.

English with covers both a tool and a companion, but Serbian distinguishes them grammatically. The tool is integrated into how the action is performed; the companion is another participant alongside the actor. The fuller treatment is on means and accompaniment.

Accompaniment: с(а) plus instrumental

Use с or са when the noun accompanies, associates with, or is combined with something. The expanded form са is required in some sound environments and frequent elsewhere; both govern instrumental in the meaning “with.”

После предавања идем на ручак са старом пријатељицом.

After the lecture, I'm going to lunch with an old friend.

Наручио је салату са печеним поврћем.

He ordered a salad with roasted vegetables.

Do not confuse this с(а) with the homonymous source preposition meaning “from/off,” which governs the genitive. Case and meaning work together.

Разговарала је са директором испред сале.

She spoke with the director in front of the hall.

Сишла је са последњег спрата пешке.

She came down from the top floor on foot.

In са директором, the person is a companion or interlocutor and the phrase is instrumental. In са последњег спрата, the floor is a source and the phrase is genitive. The preposition alone cannot settle the case.

💡
Ask whether the noun participates alongside someone (с колегом, instrumental) or marks a point left behind (са стола, genitive). This semantic test is more reliable than translating English with or from mechanically.

Route and stationary spatial relations

The bare instrumental can describe the route or area through which movement unfolds. It does not express a destination: the location is treated as the path occupied during the event.

До станице смо шетали тихим улицама старог града.

We walked to the station through the quiet streets of the old town.

The prepositions над “above,” под “under,” пред “in front of,” међу “among,” and за “behind/at” can govern instrumental for a stationary relation. Several of them take accusative when they express a destination or placement. That opposition resembles у/на plus locative versus accusative, but the stationary member here is instrumental.

Седели смо под великом липом док није престала киша.

We sat under the large linden tree until the rain stopped.

Склонили смо бицикле под велику надстрешницу.

We moved the bicycles under the large canopy.

The first sentence locates the sitting and uses instrumental. The second describes movement to a new position and uses accusative. The complete network belongs on place, time, and predicate uses.

Repeated time and characteristic circumstances

Bare instrumental time phrases commonly mean that something happens on repeated occasions or throughout a characteristic period. Недељом means “on Sundays,” not necessarily one particular Sunday; радним данима means “on weekdays.” Context can narrow the interpretation, but repetition is the productive beginner pattern.

Радним данима кафић се отвара у пола осам.

On weekdays, the café opens at half past seven.

Суботом често вечерамо на тераси.

On Saturdays, we often have dinner on the terrace.

The second example contains the regular temporal instrumental суботом. English speakers should learn such frequent forms as time expressions while still recognizing the case pattern that connects them.

Predicative instrumental and governed complements

Some verbs use instrumental to name a role, capacity, or classification assigned to an object. This remains productive after predicates such as сматрати “consider” and in constructions meaning “declare/appoint as.” After постати “become,” nominative is the normal contemporary neutral choice; an instrumental predicate there is marked or literary and should not be generalized.

Сви га сматрају поузданим стручњаком.

Everyone considers him a reliable expert.

Other verbs simply govern instrumental, often with reflexive се: бавити се “engage in,” поносити се “be proud of,” управљати “manage/control,” and располагати “have at one’s disposal.” Learn these as lexical frames.

Моја сестра се већ годинама бави савременом архитектуром.

My sister has worked in contemporary architecture for years.

Мештани се поносе обновљеним градским тргом.

The local residents are proud of the renovated town square.

English of in “proud of” does not trigger genitive here. The Serbian verb frame поносити се + instrumental determines the form.

What the instrumental does not automatically mark

English by can introduce either a means or the agent of a passive clause. Serbian does not normally turn that second meaning into a bare instrumental. A natural sentence often uses the active voice; formal administrative prose may use од стране plus genitive when the agent must remain inside a passive construction.

Коначни извештај потписала је директорка пројекта.

The final report was signed by the project director.

This Serbian sentence is active even though the idiomatic English translation is passive. A formal passive such as потписан је од стране директорке is possible (formal), but a bare instrumental директорком is not the neutral way to translate English “by the director.” This matters because “instrumental” names a broad case, not a promise that every English instrument- or agent-like phrase will use it.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding с(а) before a tool or vehicle.

❌ Сваког јутра долазим на посао са аутобусом.

Incorrect in standard Serbian for the means of transport — accompaniment с(а) is not used.

✅ Сваког јутра долазим на посао аутобусом.

Every morning, I come to work by bus.

2. Leaving the modifier outside the instrumental agreement pattern.

❌ Отворила је пакет мали ножем.

Incorrect — the adjective must agree with the instrumental noun.

✅ Отворила је пакет малим кухињским ножем.

She opened the package with a small kitchen knife.

3. Reading every са phrase as accompaniment.

❌ Склоните чаше са старим столом.

Incorrect for 'off the old table' — that source meaning requires the genitive.

✅ Склоните чаше са старог стола.

Move the glasses off the old table.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Tool or companion?

Identify the bare instrumental of means and the prepositional instrumental of accompaniment.

Са комшиницом сам до пијаце отишла њеним малим аутом.

I went to the market with my neighbor in her small car.

Answer: са комшиницом marks accompaniment; њеним малим аутом marks the means of transport and has no preposition.

Task 2: Location or destination?

Explain why the following stationary phrase is instrumental.

Пас је мирно лежао пред затвореним вратима.

The dog lay quietly in front of the closed door.

Answer: пред plus instrumental describes an existing position. Movement to that position would use accusative, as in the phrase пред затворена врата.

Key Takeaways

The instrumental packages participation in the manner, company, route, setting, time, or classification of an event. Use a bare form for tools and means, с(а) for companions, and the required frame after governing verbs. Because plural dative, instrumental, and locative look alike, meaning and government must do the identifying.
