The Serbian instrumental profiles a participant as part of the circumstances in which an event unfolds: the tool or means that enables it, the companion who accompanies it, the manner in which it happens, the path it follows, the time frame in which it recurs, or a role assigned to someone. These meanings are related, but Serbian signals a crucial division: a bare instrumental often marks means, manner, path, or predicative role, while с/са + instrumental marks accompaniment.
English with covers both ‘using a tool’ and ‘together with a person.’ Translating it mechanically is therefore one of the fastest ways to produce non-native Serbian. First determine the participant's relation to the event; only then choose a prepositionless instrumental or с/са.
Forms by Gender and Number
Instrumental marking extends across the noun phrase. The forms below illustrate the major productive patterns:
| Gender/number | Nominative | Instrumental phrase | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | стари кључ | старим кључем | modifier -им, noun -ем/-ом |
| feminine singular | нова оловка | новом оловком | modifier -ом, noun -ом |
| neuter singular | мало возило | малим возилом | modifier -им, noun -ом |
| masculine plural | стари кључеви | старим кључевима | -им + -има |
| feminine plural | нове оловке | новим оловкама | -им + -ама |
| neuter plural | мала возила | малим возилима | -им + -има |
Потписала је уговор новом хемијском оловком.
She signed the contract with a new ballpoint pen.
The noun ending varies with stem and gender, but modifiers must agree. The form новим возилима is also dative and locative plural; its case becomes instrumental only when the construction assigns an instrumental role.
Instrument and Means: No с/са
A tool is not a companion. Standard Serbian normally uses the bare instrumental for the object physically used to perform an action and for a means of transport or communication.
Отворио је подрум старим кључем који је нашао у фиоци.
He opened the basement with an old key that he found in the drawer.
На посао идем аутобусом, а извештај шаљем електронском поштом.
I go to work by bus, and I send the report by email.
Adding с changes the relation. Идем с аутобусом would not mean ‘I travel by bus’; in an unusual context it could mean that the speaker moves together with a bus. The unmarked means construction is simply аутобусом.
This instrumental also extends to enabling medium and cause-like agency:
Договор смо потврдили кратким телефонским разговором.
We confirmed the agreement through a brief phone call.
The phone call is construed as the means by which confirmation was achieved, not as a co-participant.
Accompaniment: с/са + Instrumental
Accompaniment presents two participants as jointly involved. The companion is introduced by с/са.
На изложбу сам отишла с колегиницом из редакције.
I went to the exhibition with a colleague from the editorial office.
Разговарали смо са новим станарима о поправци лифта.
We spoke with the new tenants about repairing the elevator.
The base preposition is с. Са is required or strongly preferred where it prevents a difficult cluster, especially before с, ш, з, ж, and in fixed pronoun forms such as са мном. Elsewhere both variants can occur, but economical с is common: с братом, с колегом. This variation does not change the case or meaning.
Са мном је дошла и сестра, али се вратила с братом.
My sister came with me too, but she returned with our brother.
Manner: How the Event Is Carried Out
Manner instrumentals characterize the style, intensity, or bodily configuration of an event. Some are bare; others form conventional с/са phrases.
Говорила је тихим гласом, али са великом сигурношћу.
She spoke in a quiet voice, but with great confidence.
Ушао је брзим кораком и без поздрава сео за сто.
He came in at a brisk pace and sat down at the table without greeting anyone.
Bare тихим гласом and брзим кораком present the manner as an internal mode of the action. Са великом сигурношћу packages it as an accompanying quality. There is no universal English cue that predicts the preposition; high-frequency collocations must be learned as phrases.
Path: Space Traversed by the Event
A bare instrumental can mark an extended route: the ground along which movement proceeds. It does not simply mean location.
Вратили смо се шумским путем јер је главни пут био затворен.
We returned by the forest road because the main road was closed.
Туристи су сатима шетали старим градом.
The tourists walked around the old town for hours.
Compare шетали су старим градом, which profiles the area traversed, with били су у старом граду, which merely locates them. Кроз стари град + accusative is also possible and explicitly presents movement through a bounded area. The instrumental is more route-like; кроз foregrounds passage through.
Time: Recurring or Framing Periods
Temporal instrumental commonly places an event in a recurring period or broad frame: понедељком ‘on Mondays,’ јутром ‘in the morning,’ зими ‘in winter,’ ноћу ‘at night.’ These expressions are lexicalized to different degrees.
Понедељком радим од куће, а петком обично завршавам раније.
On Mondays I work from home, and on Fridays I usually finish earlier.
Зими се овај пут често затвара због снега.
In winter this road is often closed because of snow.
The instrumental here does not date one uniquely identified Monday. У понедељак + accusative normally points to a particular Monday, while понедељком characteristically means every Monday or Mondays as a routine.
Predicative and Role Complements
Instrumental may assign a category, evaluation, or role to an object, especially with verbs such as сматрати ‘consider,’ назвати ‘call,’ and certain passive or elevated constructions. It is not the default case after every copula.
Сматрамо је поузданом партнерком у овом пројекту.
We consider her a reliable partner in this project.
Критичари су роман назвали најважнијим делом његове каријере.
Critics called the novel the most important work of his career.
Contemporary neutral Serbian normally says Она је лекарка and Постао је директор, with nominative predicate nouns. Она је лекарком is not a neutral alternative; predicate instrumental with бити is archaic, literary, or associated with other BCMS standard traditions and must not be blended into ordinary Serbian. The active constructions above are different: the governing verb licenses an instrumental role complement.
Prepositionless versus Prepositional Instrumental
The contrast can change the participant relation without changing the noun:
Милан је дошао аутомобилом.
Milan came by car. (means)
Милан је дошао с мајстором.
Milan came with the repairman. (accompaniment)
Other prepositions—под, над, пред, за, међу—take instrumental for a static spatial configuration, but accusative for a goal configuration. That two-case system belongs to the motion-versus-rest page. It should not be confused with bare means or с/са accompaniment.
Syncretism: Identify the Governor
Plural dative, instrumental, and locative forms coincide. Compare one surface phrase in three constructions:
Прилазимо новим зградама.
We are approaching the new buildings. (dative governed by прилазити)
Пролазимо новим улицама.
We are passing along the new streets. (instrumental path)
Говоримо о новим зградама.
We are talking about the new buildings. (locative governed by о)
The ending -ама cannot choose among those analyses. Predicate, preposition, and semantic role do the work.
Task 1: Tool, Companion, Manner, or Path?
Classify each instrumental, then state whether с/са is required.
Новинарка је саговорнику послала питања поруком.
The journalist sent the interviewee the questions by message. (means; no с/са)
Новинарка је на разговор дошла са сниматељем.
The journalist came to the interview with a camera operator. (companion; са required)
После разговора прошли су дугим ходником без речи.
After the interview, they walked along the long corridor without a word. (path; no с/са)
Task 2: Change the Construal
Use the same event but alter the instrumental phrase so that a means becomes accompaniment or a recurring time becomes one specific date.
На факултет идем бициклом, а данас идем с комшиницом.
I go to university by bicycle, but today I am going with my neighbor.
Петком имамо састанак, али ове недеље ћемо га одржати у четвртак.
We have a meeting on Fridays, but this week we will hold it on Thursday.
The first pair contrasts means and accompaniment. The second contrasts habitual instrumental петком with the particular-day accusative phrase у четвртак.
Common Mistakes
Adding с/са to a means of transport
❌ На посао идем са аутобусом.
Incorrect for travel by bus — с/са turns the vehicle into a companion.
✅ На посао идем аутобусом.
I go to work by bus.
Omitting с/са before a companion
❌ На концерт идем мојом сестром.
Incorrect — a companion requires с/са, and the whole phrase remains instrumental.
✅ На концерт идем с мојом сестром.
I am going to the concert with my sister.
Leaving the adjective undeclined
❌ Отворио је врата стари кључем.
Incorrect — the adjective must agree in the instrumental.
✅ Отворио је врата старим кључем.
He opened the door with an old key.
Using instrumental after neutral бити
❌ Моја тетка је лекарком у дому здравља.
Incorrect in contemporary neutral Serbian — бити takes a nominative profession predicate here.
✅ Моја тетка је лекарка у дому здравља.
My aunt is a doctor at the health center.
Calling every -има phrase instrumental
❌ Израз „О старим мостовима“ је у инструменталу јер се завршава на -има.
Incorrect analysis — о governs the locative despite the syncretic ending.
✅ „Путујемо старим путевима“ садржи инструментал путање.
Путујемо старим путевима contains an instrumental of path.
Key Takeaways
- Bare instrumental marks means, manner, route, recurring time, and certain assigned roles; с/са + instrumental marks accompaniment.
- English with does not decide whether Serbian needs с/са: semantic relation does.
- Neutral profession predicates after бити use nominative, while verbs such as сматрати and назвати can license predicative instrumental.
- Plural dative, instrumental, and locative are syncretic, so identify the governor and event role before the ending.
Instrumental semantics is thus not a collection of translations for English with. It is a set of event relations: enabling means, accompanying participant, characteristic manner, traversed path, temporal frame, and assigned role.
