Advanced Genitive Semantics

The Serbian genitive is best understood as a network of delimitation. It locates something by a source or boundary, relates one entity to another, or selects a quantity from a larger domain. Source, separation, possession, partitivity, measure, comparison, negation, and lexical government are not an arbitrary list: each construes a referent relative to something from which it is separated, drawn, measured, or identified.

English often uses of, from, a possessive 's, word order, or no preposition at all. None maps one-to-one onto the genitive. Choose the Serbian construction from its semantic relation and governor, then supply the case form across the entire noun phrase.

Forms and Phrase-Wide Agreement

These model phrases display the main singular and plural patterns. Stem alternations and zero endings create additional forms, especially in the genitive plural, so this is a semantic map rather than a replacement for the full genitive paradigms.

Gender/numberNominativeGenitive phraseTypical pattern
masculine singularстари градстарог градаmodifier -ог, noun -а
feminine singularнова школанове школе-е throughout
neuter singularмало селомалог селаmodifier -ог, noun -а
masculine pluralстари градовистарих градоваmodifier -их, noun commonly -а
feminine pluralнове школенових школаmodifier -их, noun often zero
neuter pluralмала селамалих селаmodifier -их, noun often -а

После дугог састанка нисмо имали снаге за још једну расправу.

After the long meeting, we did not have the energy for another discussion.

Both дугог and састанка mark the genitive. In the genitive plural нових школа, the adjective makes the case visible even though школа has no overt ending. Agreement is therefore evidence, not decoration.

Source and Separation: The Spatial Core

The clearest genitive meaning is movement or separation from a reference point. Serbian distinguishes how that point is conceptualized:

PrepositionCore relationExample phrase
изout of an interior or bounded domainиз старе зграде
саoff a surface; from an event or institution construed with наса високог зида, са састанка
одaway from a point/person; origin; material sourceод прозора, од колегинице
безabsence or deprivationбез важеће дозволе

Изашла је из канцеларије, узела фасциклу са стола и удаљила се од прозора.

She left the office, took the folder off the table, and moved away from the window.

This source logic extends beyond physical space. Из разговора identifies information emerging from a discussion; од страха marks a cause conceived as an origin; без подршке defines a situation by separation from something expected.

Из његовог одговора закључили смо да понуда више не важи.

From his answer, we concluded that the offer was no longer valid.

Possession and Referential Anchoring

In possessive genitives, one noun identifies or anchors another: кров куће, крај филма, мишљење већине, роман Иве Андрића. The relation is broader than legal ownership; it can be part–whole, authorship, institutional affiliation, or a characteristic associated with the genitive referent.

Кључеви новог стана остали су код власнице.

The keys to the new apartment were left with the owner.

На крају Андрићевог романа приповедач мења перспективу.

At the end of Andrić's novel, the narrator changes perspective.

The second sentence uses the possessive adjective Андрићевог, not a genitive noun phrase. Serbian often prefers a possessive adjective for a single identifiable person, especially a personal name, while a genitive phrase remains natural with expanded or plural possessors: роман нашег познатог писца. The two constructions divide the possessive domain rather than translating English 's uniformly.

Partitivity and Measure

Partitive genitive identifies material or members from which an amount is taken. Measure nouns, quantity expressions, and numerals five and above make this relation especially visible.

Додај још мало топле воде и две кашике шећера.

Add a little more warm water and two tablespoons of sugar.

На полици је остало пет примерака новог издања.

Five copies of the new edition remained on the shelf.

In мало воде, the genitive denotes an unbounded substance being measured. In пет примерака, the numeral construction requires genitive plural. After два, три, четири, Serbian uses the paucal pattern instead; that numeral syntax is covered separately on the numeral government page.

The genitive can also contrast total and partial affectedness, though this is lexically and stylistically restricted in modern Serbian:

Попио је кафу пре поласка.

He drank the coffee before leaving. (accusative: a contextually definite whole)

Попио је кафе па наставио да ради.

He drank some coffee and then continued working. (genitive: an unspecified amount; marked and context-dependent)

The second construction is possible but not a productive substitute for every accusative object. In ordinary neutral speech, попио је мало кафе makes the partitive meaning clearer.

Comparison and the Boundary Standard

Comparatives commonly take од + genitive to identify the standard against which something is measured. The compared item is located beyond a conceptual boundary.

Овај пут је краћи од старог пута кроз планину.

This route is shorter than the old road through the mountain.

Резултат је бољи од прошлогодишњег, али још није довољно добар.

The result is better than last year's, but it is still not good enough.

When the comparison expands into a clause, Serbian often uses него instead: Пут је краћи него што смо очекивали ‘The route is shorter than we expected.’ Do not attach a genitive noun mechanically after every English than.

Negation: Mandatory and Restricted Genitives

Negation interacts with the genitive in several distinct ways. With existential нема, the absent entity is genitive and the verb is impersonal:

У извештају нема важних података о трошковима.

There is no important information about the costs in the report.

Fixed negative-polarity expressions also preserve genitive, often emphasizing a minimal quantity:

Није рекао ни речи током целог састанка.

He did not say a single word during the entire meeting.

Modern neutral Serbian does not automatically change every accusative object to genitive under negation. Не пијем кафу is the ordinary negation of Пијем кафу. Не пијем кафе can receive a partitive or marked reading, but teaching it as a universal ‘genitive of negation’ produces unnatural sentences.

💡
Separate three facts: нема + genitive is regular; phrases such as ни речи are established negative-partitive constructions; genitive instead of an ordinary accusative object is limited and meaning-sensitive.

Lexical Government

Some verbs and adjectives select genitive independently of any visible preposition. Their construction must be learned as part of the lexical item:

GovernorMeaningModel phrase
бојати сеfear / be afraid ofбојати се последица
сећати сеrememberсећати се разговора
клонити сеkeep away fromклонити се сукоба
лишитиdepriveлишити некога права
пунfull ofпун неочекиваних обрта
достојанworthy ofдостојан поверења

Сећамо се првог дана у школи, али се не сећамо имена наставнице.

We remember the first day of school, but we do not remember the teacher's name.

English remember is directly transitive. Serbian сећати се is reflexive and governs the genitive; neither fact can be predicted by translating the English verb word for word.

Syncretism and Minimal Contrasts

Masculine animate accusative singular is identical to genitive singular. Forms such as старог професора therefore need syntactic analysis:

Видим старог професора испред библиотеке.

I see the old professor in front of the library. (accusative direct object)

Нема старог професора на данашњем списку.

The old professor is not on today's list. (genitive after нема)

Likewise, feminine школе may be genitive singular or nominative/accusative plural. Agreement, the governor, and clause structure resolve the form. A visible ending does not independently encode a semantic role.

💡
When a form is syncretic, ask what licenses the phrase. Видети licenses an accusative object; нема licenses genitive; из always governs genitive. Case is a relation in the sentence, not a label printed on the final vowel.

For each sentence, name the genitive domain—source, possession, measure, comparison, negation, or lexical government—and identify its governor.

После разговора смо се сетили још једног важног детаља.

After the conversation, we remembered one more important detail. (после marks time from a boundary; сетити се governs another genitive)

Ова сала је двоструко већа од старе сале.

This hall is twice as large as the old hall. (comparison with од)

The first sentence contains two genitives for different reasons. Identical case does not imply identical meaning; the network is connected, but each phrase still has a local governor.

Task 2: Choose the Source Preposition

Complete the route by choosing из, са, or од, then decline the whole phrase.

Вратила се из нове канцеларије, донела белешке са раног састанка и одмакла се од отвореног прозора.

She returned from the new office, brought notes from the early meeting, and moved away from the open window.

Сишао је са крова, изашао из дворишта и удаљио се од куће.

He climbed down from the roof, left the yard, and moved away from the house.

The prepositions distinguish a surface (са крова), a bounded interior (из дворишта), and distance from a reference point (од куће).

Common Mistakes

Translating English of with a single fixed construction

❌ Роман од Иве Андрића стоји на полици.

Incorrect in neutral standard Serbian for authorship — од is an unnatural word-for-word rendering of English ‘by/of.’

✅ Роман Иве Андрића стоји на полици.

A novel by Ivo Andrić is on the shelf.

Failing to decline the modifier

❌ После дуги састанка сви су били уморни.

Incorrect — both adjective and noun belong to the genitive phrase.

✅ После дугог састанка сви су били уморни.

After the long meeting, everyone was tired.

Applying genitive of negation to every object

❌ Не читам књиге вечерас.

Wrong for the intended singular ‘I am not reading the book tonight’; књиге is read as plural accusative or singular genitive, not the definite singular object.

✅ Не читам књигу вечерас.

I am not reading the book tonight.

Using од before a full comparison clause

❌ Испит је био тежи од смо очекивали.

Incorrect — од governs a genitive noun phrase, not a finite clause.

✅ Испит је био тежи него што смо очекивали.

The exam was harder than we expected.

Calling an animate accusative genitive by shape alone

❌ У реченици „Видим новог директора“, израз „новог директора“ је у генитиву.

Incorrect analysis — it is the accusative direct object despite matching the genitive form.

✅ У реченици „Нема новог директора“, израз „новог директора“ је у генитиву.

In the sentence ‘The new director is not here,’ новог директора is genitive.

Key Takeaways

  • Genitive meanings form a network around source, separation, relational anchoring, and selection from a domain.
  • Prepositions, quantity expressions, comparatives, negative constructions, and lexical governors each license the case locally.
  • Нема + genitive is regular, but neutral Serbian does not convert every negated accusative object into genitive.
  • Syncretic forms must be analyzed from their construction, while adjectives and determiners keep case visible across the phrase.

The genitive's advanced uses become manageable when treated as related construals of source, boundary, and selected domain. The decisive evidence is always the local construction: preposition, predicate, quantity, or relation between nouns.
