Motion Prepositions: kroz, niz, uz, prema, k

Serbian distinguishes a path traversed from a direction faced or approached. Кроз, низ, and уз + accusative describe how a route relates to a landmark: through it, down/along it, or up/along it. Према and к/ка + dative orient movement toward a landmark without necessarily asserting arrival. English through, down, along, and toward overlap differently, so each Serbian frame needs its own spatial model.

If the case forms themselves are unfamiliar, review accusative motion and direction and dative forms before comparing the route meanings here.

The core map

PrepositionCaseSpatial prototype
крозaccusativethrough an interior, medium, or bounded area
низaccusativedownward or lengthwise along a route
узaccusativeupward or lengthwise beside a route/boundary
премаdativetoward, facing, or in relation to
к/каdativedirection toward; often written or route-like

Кренули смо кроз шуму према старом планинарском дому.

We set off through the forest toward the old mountain lodge.

Кроз шуму is the traversed path and takes accusative. Према старом планинарском дому is the orientation and takes dative. Neither phrase alone guarantees that the group reached the lodge.

💡
Separate route from endpoint. Кроз/низ/уз answer “by what path?”; према/к(а) answer “in what direction?”; у/на + accusative usually present an intended destination.

Кроз + accusative: through an interior or medium

Кроз presents the landmark as a space, opening, crowd, medium, or period whose extent is traversed.

Base phraseAfter кроз
стари тунелкроз стари тунел
густа шумакроз густу шуму
отворена вратакроз отворена врата
велика гужвакроз велику гужву

Аутобус је прошао кроз дугачак тунел и зауставио се код језера.

The bus went through a long tunnel and stopped by the lake.

Једва смо се пробили кроз гужву испред главног улаза.

We barely made our way through the crowd in front of the main entrance.

The same spatial schema extends to channels and processes: information passes through a system; skill develops through practice.

Кроз разговор смо схватили да смо добили различита упутства.

Through talking, we realized that we had received different instructions.

Тај обичај се мењао кроз векове, али није потпуно нестао.

That custom changed through the centuries but never disappeared completely.

For movement across/over a surface or via an intermediary, преко + genitive is often the closer frame: преко моста, преко посредника. Кроз мост would mean through the structure or an interior passage, not ordinarily across its deck.

Низ + accusative: downward or along

Низ profiles a route from a higher point toward a lower one, or movement lengthwise in the conventional “down” direction of a street, corridor, river, or sequence.

После кише вода је јурила низ стрму улицу.

After the rain, water rushed down the steep street.

Поштар је полако гурао бицикл низ дугачак ходник.

The mail carrier slowly pushed the bicycle down the long corridor.

With rivers, низ реку commonly means downstream; уз реку can mean upstream or along the river in the opposite/oriented direction, depending on context.

Чамац је пловио низ реку док су се облаци скупљали над брдима.

The boat traveled downstream while clouds gathered over the hills.

Do not confuse prepositional низ + accusative with the noun низ “a series/string.” The noun commonly takes a genitive complement.

Низ улицу је прошао низ старих аутомобила.

A line of old cars went down the street.

The first низ улицу is preposition + accusative path. The second низ старих аутомобила is the nominative noun “a series/line” plus genitive plural. Identical spelling hides different grammar.

Уз + accusative: upward, along, and close beside

Уз often presents upward movement along a slope, stairs, or current. It also presents a route running close beside a linear boundary such as a river, wall, or coast.

Попели смо се уз камене степенице до мале терасе.

We climbed up the stone steps to a small terrace.

До села води уска стаза уз десну обалу реке.

A narrow path follows the right bank of the river to the village.

The endpoint may be stated separately with до + genitive or another goal phrase. Уз степенице describes the route; до терасе gives its limit.

Дуж + genitive also means “along the length of” and can describe either a path or distribution without an upward/close-contact image. Уз обалу often suggests close adjacency; дуж обале profiles extension along the coastline.

Дуж обале су постављене клупе, а бициклистичка стаза иде уз реку.

Benches have been placed along the bank, and the cycle path runs beside the river.

Abstract уз constructions

The adjacency meaning extends into accompaniment and enabling circumstances. Frequent frames include уз кафу, уз музику, уз помоћ + genitive, and уз услов да.

О детаљима ћемо разговарати уз кафу после презентације.

We'll discuss the details over coffee after the presentation.

Уз помоћ комшија, породица је поправила кров пре зиме.

With the neighbors' help, the family repaired the roof before winter.

These are established extensions of уз + accusative: кафу, помоћ are accusative. The genitive комшија depends on the noun помоћ, not directly on уз.

Према + dative: toward, facing, according to

Spatial према gives an orientation. It can accompany movement, a static facing relation, or a comparative/relational viewpoint.

UseModel
movement towardкренути према излазу
facing/orientationпрозор према дворишту
attitude/behavior towardоднос према запосленима
according toпрема плану, према извештају

Кад стигнете до фонтане, окрените се према северном улазу.

When you reach the fountain, turn toward the north entrance.

Према новом распореду, лабораторија петком ради краће.

According to the new schedule, the laboratory has shorter hours on Fridays.

Његов однос према млађим колегама увек је био коректан.

His attitude toward younger colleagues was always fair.

The noun phrases are dative: северном улазу, новом распореду, млађим колегама. Plural dative may look like instrumental or locative, so the preposition and construction identify it.

Према does not entail arrival. Compare идемо према станици “we are heading toward the station” with идемо на станицу “we are going to the station” as an intended endpoint.

💡
Use према when orientation itself matters. Use у/на + accusative when the noun is construed as the destination to be reached, and до + genitive when a boundary or endpoint is reached.

К/ка + dative: directional orientation

К/ка also means “toward,” but in contemporary Serbian it is more restricted than English to. It is natural in route descriptions, elevated or written prose, and abstract goal phrases such as корак ка решењу. Ordinary visits to a person normally use код + genitive, and ordinary concrete destinations often use у/на + accusative.

The longer ка avoids difficult clusters, especially before к, г, and х, and is common more broadly; short к remains possible where pronunciation allows.

После раскрснице стаза скреће ка густој боровој шуми.

After the crossroads, the path turns toward a dense pine forest.

Нови договор је важан корак ка трајном решењу спора.

The new agreement is an important step toward a lasting solution to the dispute. (formal)

These phrases orient a path; they do not assert that the forest or solution has been reached. Идем к лекару is grammatically interpretable but marked in neutral present-day destination use; идем код лекара is the ordinary “I am going to the doctor.”

Path, area, and endpoint competitors

Several common constructions answer different spatial questions:

FrameConstrual
кроз парк + Athrough the park from one part/side to another
по парку + Laround/throughout the park as an area
према парку + Dtoward the park
у парк + Ainto/to the park as destination
до парка + Gas far as/to the boundary of the park

Прошли смо кроз парк, прошетали по кеју и наставили према центру.

We went through the park, walked along the riverside promenade, and continued toward the center.

English may use through or toward loosely for several of these. Serbian makes the route geometry explicit.

Mini-route narrative

Од хотела смо кренули ка центру, прошли кроз пешачку зону, спустили се низ степенице и наставили уз реку до тврђаве.

From the hotel we headed toward the center, passed through the pedestrian zone, went down the steps, and continued along the river to the fortress.

The narrative moves from orientation (ка + dative) through an interior path (кроз + accusative), down a route (низ + accusative), alongside a boundary (уз + accusative), and finally to a limit (до + genitive).

Verb prefixes can encode related path meanings without replacing these complements; the prefixed directional-verb guide shows how the two systems interact.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Path, direction, or endpoint?

Translate through the market, toward the market, into the market, and as far as the market. Label the case and explain whether each phrase names a traversed area, orientation, destination, or boundary.

Task 2: Give route instructions

Write four linked directions using кроз, низ, уз, and према. Make every adjective agree in the governed case and end with a separate destination phrase.

Common Mistakes

❌ Прошли смо кроз старом тунелу.

Incorrect — кроз governs accusative, so the phrase must be кроз стари тунел.

✅ Прошли смо кроз стари тунел.

We passed through the old tunnel.

❌ Пењали смо се уз уској стази.

Incorrect — path preposition уз requires accusative уску стазу.

✅ Пењали смо се уз уску стазу.

We climbed up the narrow path.

❌ Окренула се према главни улаз.

Incorrect — према governs dative: према главном улазу.

✅ Окренула се према главном улазу.

She turned toward the main entrance.

❌ Идем ка лекара на контролу.

Incorrect in neutral destination usage and wrong case — ordinary Serbian uses код + genitive for going to a professional.

✅ Идем код лекара на контролу.

I'm going to the doctor for a checkup.

❌ Трчали смо према парку и стигли кроз парк у осам.

Incorrect relation — према only gives orientation, while arrival at the park needs a destination or endpoint construction.

✅ Трчали смо према парку и стигли у парк у осам.

We ran toward the park and reached it at eight.

Key Takeaways

  • Кроз, низ, уз + accusative describe a traversed path: through, down/along, and up/along.
  • Према and к/ка + dative orient movement or relation without asserting arrival.
  • Distinguish route, distributed area, direction, destination, and boundary: кроз парк, по парку, према парку, у парк, до парка.
  • К/ка is restricted and often written/route-like; ordinary visits to people use код + genitive.
  • Abstract extensions such as кроз разговор, уз помоћ, према плану, корак ка решењу preserve their case frames.
