Prefixes turn the broad motion verb ићи into verbs that encode a path: reaching a goal, leaving, entering, exiting, approaching, crossing, passing, or going around. The central forms are доћи, отићи, ући, изаћи, but the same system extends to прићи, прећи, проћи, обићи.
These verbs are normally perfective: they present one completed path or boundary. Their imperfective partners—долазити, одлазити, улазити, излазити and others—describe motion in progress, repeated motion, or an event viewed without its endpoint.
For unprefixed ићи, walking, and elementary destination phrases, start with Basic Verbs of Motion.
The Directional Map
| Perfective | Imperfective | Path contribution | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| доћи | долазити | до-: reach the goal | come, arrive |
| отићи | одлазити | departure from a point | leave, go away |
| ући | улазити | у-: inward | enter |
| изаћи | излазити | из-: outward | exit, go out |
| прићи | прилазити | при-: approach | approach, come up to |
| прећи | прелазити | пре-: across / to another side | cross, transfer |
| проћи | пролазити | про-: through / past | pass, go through |
| обићи | обилазити | об(и)-: around / a circuit | go around, visit |
Кад дођеш до рецепције, позови ме.
When you reach reception, call me.
После ручка ћу отићи до поште.
After lunch I will go over to the post office.
Уђите слободно; врата су откључана.
Come in; the door is unlocked.
The prefix contributes a path, but the verb’s modern form and meaning must still be learned as a whole. In particular, отићи has present одем, not a mechanically built form based on оти-.
Present Stems and Past Forms
The prefixed perfectives share several stem alternations, but отићи stands apart.
| Infinitive | 1st singular | 3rd plural | Masculine / feminine l-participle |
|---|---|---|---|
| доћи | дођем | дођу | дошао / дошла |
| отићи | одем | оду | отишао / отишла |
| ући | уђем | уђу | ушао / ушла |
| изаћи | изађем | изађу | изашао / изашла |
| прићи | приђем | приђу | пришао / пришла |
| прећи | пређем | пређу | прешао / прешла |
| проћи | прођем | прођу | прошао / прошла |
| обићи | обиђем | обиђу | обишао / обишла |
There is no honest way to recover every form from the infinitive by one simple rule. The table is a principal-parts inventory, not merely a spelling exercise.
Јуче сам ушла у погрешан улаз, па сам морала да се вратим.
Yesterday I entered through the wrong entrance, so I had to go back. (female speaker)
Он је отишао раније, а она је остала до краја.
He left earlier, while she stayed until the end.
The l-participles agree with their subjects: feminine ушла, masculine отишао, feminine остала. Auxiliary clitics сам/је form the perfect; they cannot simply be omitted in neutral standard Serbian.
Perfective Boundary versus Motion in Progress
A perfective present such as уђем normally does not describe entering in progress at speech time. Use imperfective улазим for the unfolding motion; use perfective уђем for a future boundary after кад, чим, ако or in another licensed context.
Сада улазимо у тунел, па ће веза можда пући.
We are entering a tunnel now, so the connection may drop.
Чим уђемо у тунел, искључићу звучник.
As soon as we enter the tunnel, I will turn off the speaker.
Туристи сваког јутра излазе из хотела око девет.
The tourists leave the hotel every morning around nine.
Кад туристи изађу, особље ће очистити собе.
When the tourists have left, the staff will clean the rooms.
The imperfectives улазимо, излазе show current or repeated motion. Perfectives уђемо, изађу present the completed directional boundary.
The Prefix Does Not Replace the Complement
Direction is expressed jointly by the prefixed verb and its complement. Each verb has characteristic government.
Arrival and departure
Доћи takes destinations such as у + accusative, на + accusative, or код + genitive. Доћи до + genitive means reach as far as a point. Отићи can combine a destination with a source introduced by из, са, од + genitive.
Гости су дошли у Београд из три различита града.
The guests came to Belgrade from three different cities.
Мина је отишла с посла право код лекара.
Mina left work and went straight to the doctor.
Entering and exiting
Ући у + accusative marks entry into a space or abstract domain. Изаћи из + genitive marks exit; изаћи на + accusative presents emergence onto a surface or open area.
Не можете ући у зграду без пропуснице.
You cannot enter the building without a pass.
Изађите из лифта на трећем спрату.
Get out of the elevator on the third floor.
Изашли смо на терасу да удахнемо свеж ваздух.
We went out onto the terrace to get some fresh air.
Approaching, crossing, and passing
Прићи governs a bare dative: прићи шалтеру, прићи некоме. Прећи can take a direct accusative object or преко + genitive. Проћи commonly takes кроз + accusative or поред + genitive.
Пришао сам шалтеру и показао службеници пасош.
I approached the counter and showed the clerk my passport. (male speaker)
Пређите улицу код семафора, а затим прођите кроз парк.
Cross the street at the traffic light, then go through the park.
Сваког дана пролазимо поред старе железничке станице.
Every day we pass the old railway station.
The English verb approach takes a direct object, but Serbian прићи requires dative шалтеру. The cases come from the whole Serbian frame, not from the English translation.
Going around and visiting
Обићи + accusative can mean go around, tour, or visit a set of places or people.
За једно поподне обишли смо три музеја.
In one afternoon we visited three museums.
Imperfective обилазити presents repeated visiting or the route in progress: обилазимо музеје.
Clitics with Directional Verbs
When прићи takes a personal pronoun, the dative may be a clitic. It occupies the normal early cluster.
Кад му приђеш, реци му да те ја шаљем.
When you approach him, tell him that I sent you.
После састанка сам јој пришла и представила се.
After the meeting I approached her and introduced myself. (female speaker)
In сам јој пришла, auxiliary сам precedes dative јој. The l-participle пришла agrees with the female subject, not with the dative person.
Questions, Negation, and Modal Complements
Гости улазе у салу кроз бочна врата.
The guests are entering the hall through the side door.
Гости не улазе у салу кроз бочна врата.
The guests are not entering the hall through the side door.
Да ли гости улазе у салу кроз бочна врата?
Are the guests entering the hall through the side door?
After a modal, both да + present and the infinitive are standard. The directional complement remains unchanged.
Морамо да уђемо у салу пре почетка.
We must enter the hall before the start.
Морамо ући у салу пре почетка.
We must enter the hall before the start.
Because infinitives in -ћи retain their final vowel, future I is written separately: ући ћу, изаћи ћеш, доћи ћемо.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Choose Perfective or Imperfective
Describe entering now, then reaching the entry boundary after чим.
Сада улазим у гаражу. — Чим уђем у гаражу, позваћу те.
I am entering the garage now. — As soon as I enter the garage, I’ll call you. Answer: imperfective улазим for motion in progress; perfective уђем for the future boundary.
Task 2: Supply the Governed Complement
Complete approach the counter, exit the building, and pass through the courtyard.
Прићи шалтеру; изаћи из зграде; проћи кроз двориште.
Approach the counter; exit the building; pass through the courtyard. Answer: bare dative, из + genitive, and кроз + accusative.

✅ Сада улазим у аутобус.
I am getting on the bus now.
Giving прићи an accusative object
❌ Пришла је човека који је чекао испред улаза.
Incorrect—прићи governs the dative; човека is accusative/genitive.
✅ Пришла је човеку који је чекао испред улаза.
She approached the man who was waiting in front of the entrance.
Pairing изаћи with the wrong source preposition
❌ Изашли смо од зграде у подне.

Regularizing the present of отићи
❌ Кад отиђем кући, послаћу ти фотографије.
Incorrect in standard Serbian—the present is одем, not отиђем.
✅ Кад одем кући, послаћу ти фотографије.
When I go home, I’ll send you the photos.
Omitting past agreement
❌ Јелена је изашао из канцеларије пре пет.
Incorrect—the l-participle must agree with feminine Јелена.
✅ Јелена је изашла из канцеларије пре пет.
Jelena left the office before five.
Key Takeaways
- Prefixes encode paths, but modern forms must be learned as complete principal-part sets.
- Perfective доћи, отићи, ући, изаћи mark bounded motion; their -лазити partners express ongoing or repeated motion.
- Complements remain essential: ући у + accusative, изаћи из + genitive, прићи + dative, проћи кроз + accusative.
- Perfective presents commonly mark future boundaries in subordinate clauses, not motion unfolding now.
- Past l-participles agree with the subject, and clitic objects retain normal Serbian cluster order.
